Apple seeded iPhone developers with the second beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0 couple of days back and just like last time have already jailbroken it.
Folks over at QuickPwn have also released an unofficial version of QuickPwn 3.0 Beta 2 for Windows users to jailbreak the latest beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0.
I say unofficial because the iPhone Dev Team hasn't blessed it and in fact, are warning users to avoid it if they want to unlock their iPhone 3G in the future.
The iPhone Dev Team has given the following reasons for not releasing their hacking tools for beta versions of iPhone firmware 3.0 on their blog:
- We don’t want to have to release a new version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn for every beta release. Last time around during the 2.0 beta period, there were nine (9!) Apple releases, spaced within a few weeks of each other.
- There are unresolved problems that we’re still working on. It’s currently impossible to get the 3.0 firmware to talk to baseband 02.28 where yellowsn0w lives, for instance.
- We don’t want to have to support everyone who wants to back down from the betas…because the betas are, well, buggy.
- It’s silly to play cat&mouse with Apple during a beta period, when relatively few people are willing to actually use the beta software in their everyday lives. There are ways Apple can tighten the screws, and we’d rather not burn methods just for a beta release."
They are asking iPhone 3G users to avoid using the unofficial QuickPwn tool is for the following reason:
Yellowsn0w is Dev team's software method to unlock iPhone 3G which currently works only with baseband 02.28.00 which was included in iPhone firmware 2.2, and if you use the unofficial QuickPwn tool; you will end up upgrading your iPhone 3G's baseband with the latest version included in the latest beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0.
When iPhone firmware 2.2.1 was released, Dev Team had released PwnageTool which allowed users to upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2.1 but preserve the baseband. Since Dev Team isn't planning to release the PwnageTool for beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0; you won't be able to preserve the baseband of your iPhone 3G.
So you should avoid using the unofficial QuickPwn tool to avoid losing the ability to software unlock your iPhone 3G.
The Dev Team has mentioned that they are currently busy working on:
Oh, and also the unlock :)"
It is also important to note that the beta version of iPhone firmware 3.0 is only available to developers of iPhone Developer Program so avoid downloading some leaked version of the firmware as it needs a developer account to activate it and like any beta software will be buggy (though we have heard that the second beta version is snappier).
But if you're a Windows user and the adventure types who doesn't care about unlocking your iPhone 3G, you can checkout unofficial QuickPwn's website to get more details.
As always, don't forget to drop us a line in the comments section below to tell us how it goes.
Thanks Johnny and Egypt for the tip!

have the fixed the DFU problem? do you still need to connect to a usb hub to jailbreak 3G?
i have a iphone 2g with 2.2 firmware it is unlocked and jailbroken. It wasnt unlocked with yellowsnow. Would it be safe to jailbreak to firmware 3.0 beta 2? And should i use quickpwn? Please help?!
We would recommend you to avoid upgrading to the beta versions of iPhone firmware 3.0.
The DFU problem was only for Mac users and the unofficial QuickPwn is currently only available for Windows users.
There is no information regarding the DFU problem for Mac users.
its not really a jailbreak…it only installs Icy. you will have to do all the jailbreaking yourself using OpenSSH…but its an improvemnt
Agreed! Please do NOT use ANYTHING on your iPhone 3.0 beta to Jailbreak/unlock right now, because Apple will use information from the beta to fix holes and possibly prevent people from unlocking/jailbreaking in the future!
Shouldn't you post a blog urging people to NOT do this?
whats the point of of jail breaking firmware 3.0. have developers even made there software compatible with it yet?
yea i wont be upgrading or using this pwnage tool i will wait for the blessing of the dev team, when its safe and ready they will tell us. so dont go for 3.0 right now anyone i heard on another site that a lot of the apps and even winterboard itself doesnt work on pwnage 3.0 beta
This all worked for me with beta 2 and quickpwn. i started loading all my favorite apps on and things were working until I got to winterboard, and specifically the deep theme. I also installed cydia (through icy) at around the same time. Then my phone was stuck on the boot screen. So I am restoring and trying again.
Tread lightly all and good luck.
You DON'T Need a Developer Account to activate the Beta Firmwarez!
FACT!
update to my comment: I think winterboard was not the problem; i tried installing mobileinstallation framework and that's what bricked me.
Question: What is Icy?
It kinda sounds like there's no chance for those of us that were stupid enough to upgrade to 2.2.1 (including baseband) to ever get an unlock…
Does the 3.0 beta activation include sim unlock?????
works… been 4 days and stable on my 2G
Icy is an APT client much like Installer or Cydia and claims to be dramatically faster than Cydia but I've heard of users having problems using and uninstalling Icy so use it at your own risk!
Icy is a product of RipDev and can be found in Installer.
I wouldn't worry about it, it will just take a little while to crack the current baseband.
The 3.0 firmware won't unlock your phone. Not even the beta.
hi,
I have jailbreak my iphone 3g 2.2, but i can't install application from itune. I don't know why. I did it before and installed a lot of application. I just restore today with the custome firmware, and i jailbreak again. But i can't install apps. Does anyone know how? It keeps saying "can't verified…"
Thank you
So if i upgrade to 2nd beta 3.0 firmware after activation…
i will be able to use any sim rite?
And yea if not then wats the purpose of paying 4 euro????
wel activation simply means jailbreak, rite???
then wat did i pay 4 euro for????
the activation is for apple to allow you to actually use the Beta software, as if you dont, it cannot activate, and you cant downgrade because the software upgrades the baseband, so your nackered really.
plug it up to the itunes and verify it
THE ONLY PROBLEMS THAT I HAVE WITH MY ITOUCH 1st Generation is that i cant install any theme or any app that affects to springboard because its mades itouch crash and u have to restore is again!REMEMBER IF U HAVE FIRMWARE 3.0 U SHOULDNT INSTALL ANY THEME OR MODIFY SPRINGBOARD IF U DONT WANT TO RESTORE AGAIN!
