News and Rumors about Apple's new iPhone is reaching a feverish pitch.
AppleInsider is reporting that the wireless radio component specification distributed with iPhone firmware 3.0 beta has revealed support for a new chip which could bring support for 802.11n Wi-Fi in Apple's next generation iPhone.
802.11n as you might know is the latest in wireless technology which includes technology called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) that uses multiple transmitter and receiver antennas resulting in up to five times the performance and up to twice the range compared to the earlier 802.11g standard.
The wireless radio component specification distributed with iPhone firmware 3.0 beta has revealed support for a new Broadcom chip BCM4329.
The current Broadcom chip BCM4325 in iPhones and iPod Touch supports 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. The new chip will add support for 802.11n features, including the ability to find and join 5GHz networks.
The chances of Apple's new iPhone supporting 802.11n are quite high as Apple has been aggressively implementing the latest wireless technology in the new versions of all their products.
They recently released AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme which support 802.11n and also support for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless bands simultaneously.
This is also not the first time we have discussed support for faster Wi-Fi. Silicon Valley Insider had reported a couple of weeks back that as per their industry source, the new iPhone will support significantly faster internet connectivity.
News and Rumors about Apple's new iPhone is reaching a feverish pitch. We have already heard the following about Apple's next generation iPhone:
- Faster Processor: Support for multi-core processors.
- Better camera: Video Capabilities and allow users to take higher resolution photos.
- More Storage: High-end iPhone with 32 GB of flash memory.
- Faster Internet Connectivity.
- OLED screen to improve battery life.

So is this only for the new iPhone coming out or is it also for 3g users?
new one, im so excited me and my mom are going to be there five hours early to get a new one (I have one, she doesn't yet, she didn't think they were so cool before I got one, now she wants one)
Well Z, iphone with its simplicity made a lot of older generations use the mobile phone as a smart phone.
Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be dealt with through firmware. This is an issue of hardware and likely will only be in the next-gen iPhone :[
Geogo3r is right, it isn't something that can be enabled with a firmware update as the Broadcom chip BCM4325 in current iPhones and iPod Touches only support 802.11b/g.
well well well the new iphone is shaping up to be amazing hoping for a few more palm pre features to make that phone even more insignificant to the world
she has a mobile phone, its annoyingly simple tho.
