iPhone OS 3.0 Reveals Possibilities of Voice Control Features?

iPhone firmware 3.0 event

Couple of patents filed by Apple at US Patent Office had revealed that their research team is working on how to further improve iPhone's user interface based on "User Movements".

In addition to user movements to improve iPhone's user interface, it looks like Apple is also working on voice control features as beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 has provided more evidence of the feature coming in Apple's next generation OS.

Ars Technica is reporting that developers who have access to the beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 have discovered evidence of new voice control features.

They have found references to a framework called "Jibbler" which could bring voice control features to the iPhone.

"Our sources turned up references to classes and methods named VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled, and SBVoiceControlSoundCompletion. SB refers to SpringBoard, and VS likely refers to Voice Services. The separate Voice Services classes leave open the possibility that Apple may eventually allow access to these services via the official SDK. There's no indication whether these voice features will be tied to newer hardware expected this summer or if the features will be compatible with existing iPhone hardware."

We could see voice-enabled navigation where a user could dictate a command to perform an action such as the much needed voice-controlled dialing feature, iPod functions such as selecting an audio track etc. The voice control features could greatly help users in hands-free operation that is needed in certain situations such as driving.

But the fact that Apple didn't mention it when they gave a preview of iPhone OS 3.0 last month could either mean that it will be available only in Apple's next generation iPhone or might not make it in the initial version of iPhone firmware 3.0.

iPhone OS 3.0 had revealed a "Voice control" option in the Settings app and a configuration file which had suggested that voice-enabled features could be coming in iPhone OS 3.0.

So are you excited to hear about the possibility of voice control features in iPhone OS 3.0? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

If this does happen it can be very, very useful on levels beyond the one I address here.

New car owners don't need to shell out extra money for equipment which they can have in a smaller package.

I would love to see which does a better job, my BMW's GPS or my iPhone.

I am excited now… thanks a lot. now i have to check this site every day.

  3. hxclos says:

It seems Apple now wants to compete with Microsoft's Sync. How else will you be able to run a turn-by-turn GPS app while your music is playing in the background, and still manage to answer phone calls? I predict women will still find a way to put on make-up on top of all this.

  4. Brett says:

Any one think its kind of strange that iphonehacks.com does not have a mobile site for the iphones and ipod touches?

  5. marcus says:

hmmm thats true however i do go to the site when i am at work or out and away from my computer on safari the only problem i see with it when I use safari on my iPhone is that it doesnt save my information like my name and email address and stuff like that so i have to retype it in before i post but other than that iphonehacks.com is just as good on the iphone as on my computer

  6. Brett says:

Well in my opinion for my iphone i like the google mobile while in safari because it loads fast. So that would maybe be the case with a mobile iphone hacks site.

  7. Cartman says:

anyone know if the next gen iPhone will have better speakers (for ringtones) and if it will let you assign more than one ringtone?

    Go Fuck Yourself!

This is the news i been looking for as i have recently gotten an accident which took my eyesight and been fumbling with the unlock button for quite a while. There is the app called ispeak which works well enough but i'm shunned for whatever else is in the thing. Hopefully it will have a smooth transiting feel to it as there are some really cool voice recognition and voice to text apps out there which could get into the iphone's tech spec.

  10. what software that i can use to typing without using a keyboard but voice control?
