Dev Team Confirm Jailbreak Process Still Valid for iPhone OS 3.0

Apple has released 5 beta versions of iPhone OS 3.0 so far and the iPhone hacking community has released the unofficial version of QuickPwn to jailbreak them.

However, the reason they are unofficial is because they haven't been released by the iPhone Dev Team who had released yellowsn0w, the first and only software method to successfully unlock iPhone 3G along with other hacking tools.

They have broken their silence to talk about the status of jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.0 and have again warned iPhone 3G users to avoid the beta versions of iPhone OS 3.0.

Back in April, the iPhone Dev Team had given the following reasons for not releasing their hacking tools for beta versions of iPhone firmware 3.0 and continue to maintain that stance:

  • We don’t want to have to release a new version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn for every beta release.  Last time around during the 2.0 beta period, there were nine (9!) Apple releases, spaced within a few weeks of each other.
  • There are unresolved problems that we’re still working on.  It’s currently impossible to get the 3.0 firmware to talk to baseband 02.28 where yellowsn0w lives, for instance.
  • We don’t want to have to support everyone who wants to back down from the betas…because the betas are, well, buggy.
  • It’s silly to play cat&mouse with Apple during a beta period, when relatively few people are willing to actually use the beta software in their everyday lives.  There are ways Apple can tighten the screws, and we’d rather not burn methods just for a beta release."

They have made the following statement on their blog about the status of jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.0:

As should be expected, the modern devteam jailbreak process is still valid. The picture below is 3.0beta5 jailbroken on an iPhone 3G. As we’ve said in previous posts, nothing other than a hardware respin can prevent our jailbreak from working on all existing iPhone and iPod Touches. They’ve chased our jailbreak so far down in the chain of trust, the only way they can fix it is in hardware.

So the good news is that Dev Team will release PwnageTool for Mac and QuickPwn for Windows to jailbreak the public release of iPhone OS 3.0 but Apple might fix the exploit in their next generation iPhone which is speculated to be announced next month at WorldWide Developer Conference making it difficult to jailbreak it.

Dev Team had this to say about the unofficial QuickPwn versions:

You may have seen other “hijacked” versions of QuickPwn out there, but all of them are buggy, none of them work on OSX, and almost everyone who uses them reverts back to 2.2.1 (because none of the useful jailbroken apps (Qik, Cycorder, and others) work on 3.0 yet).

They have again warned iPhone 3G users who want to unlock their iPhone 3G to stay away from the beta versions of iPhone OS 3.0:

If you care about the yellowsn0w unlock, don’t go anywhere near the beta releases. You will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

So folks, please be patient and avoid the beta versions and wait for the Dev Team to release tools to jailbreak the public release of iPhone OS 3.0 and preserve the baseband so that you can unlock your iPhone 3G.

hello dev team please have a solution for a downgrader for 5.09.thanks

  8. iPhoneHacks says:

Have you update to firmware 2.2.1 with or without preserving the baseband.

If you don't care about unlocking and only want to jailbreak your iPhone 3G then you can update to the latest version.

As the Dev Team have mentioned they will release tools to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0 (you might have to wait for sometime).

However, if you want to unlock your iPhone then you will need to wait for the dev team to release PwnageTool for Mac so you can update your iPhone 3G to OS 3.0 but preserve its baseband to use yellowsn0w to unlock it.

    Thanks for the tip!

I am new to iPhone and consider purchasing an unlocked phone. I am a current T-Mobile user with BBerry.
What are the pros and cons between the followings?
    1. Unlocked by Turbo Sim
    2. Unlocked by Software…i think
    3. Unlocked by Factory/Legallyy/Officialy

Especially with Firmware 3.0 update coming soon.

    Thanks in advance!

i just updated to beta 5 on my iphone 3g and am trying to jailbreak it via quickpwn. when i open quickpwn and click the arrow on the first screen, i get this error "unhandled exception has occurred in your application. if you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. if you click quit the application will close immediately." how do i fix this?

  14. genadij says:

hey so i downloaded ipsw 1,2 3.0.. now i know that the new version is due to be released in a week and it would be stupid to upgrade to beta 5 now, but i simply cannot wait anymore.. so if i upgrade to beta 5 now and then restore with the final version of 3.0 i should be fine?
any reply is appreciated.. i'm still having second thoughts about the beta 5 upgrade.

  15. genadij says:

did u have any trouble with the jailbreak.. and is the beta 5 buggy at all?

  16. Tim says:

I have an unlocked and jailbroken iphone 2G. If I update to 3.0 now will my phone still be unlocked? I know i'll lose the jailbreak but what about the unlock? Thanks.

  17. ojoe says:
