iPhone knows how to Prevent Overheating

Have you ever got a warning message on your iPhone which says "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it".

According to Apple's knowledge base its for real:

"Operate iPhone 3G in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F) ... If the interior temperature of iPhone 3G exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience [the] Temperature warning screen."

The iPhone blog reader, Jeff got this error while he was sitting next to a pool in Scottsdale Arizona where the temperature was 104 degrees.

When I saw the screenshot for the first time, I thought it was fake but Apple's Knowledge base confirms that its for real.

As per Apple's Knowledge base:

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your iPhone 3G. If this message appears, you should turn iPhone 3G off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, iPhone 3G may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving iPhone 3G in a car on a hot day.

Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.

Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Jeff's figured out a neat way to fix the problem:

"I put the iPhone between 2 cold beers and it worked!"

It's good to know that Apple has even thought of how to prevent the iPhone from overheating to protect its components from damage.

Have you seen this warning message on your iPhone?

Thanks Egypt for the tip!

I have never seen this message but during a long road trip I pluged in my phone an listens to pandora radio for about 13 hours or so. My phone felt like it was on fire and it wouldn't charge till it cooled down.

My first gen iPhone actually got a sunburn on the screen from having it docked on a charger mount in my truck. I try to be more careful with my 3g but have had it feeling like it's going to explode. Still never seen that message. I too live in the desert.

happens to me a lot. f'in iphones, great for everything but they overheat… i put it against a water with ice in it when its too hot. it works every time but takes forever to not jst cool the outside but actually cool the whole thing.

  6. Z says:

possibly start malfunctioning, possibly nothing if it cools slowly enough for no condensation and no cracking chips. then itwould work fine (provided the less robust parts, like the digitizer (touchscreen mechanics) werent bent by the chg in temps and set off calibration.

  7. yankii says:

I got my 3G the third day they were available. Later that same day, I dropped it into a mug of coffee. I turned it off immediately, and put it in the oven at 150F to dry it out. When I tried to turn it on an hour later, I got than message. After another week in a bowl of uncooked rice, the phone came on with no problem, and I have not seen that message since.
