iPhone Users will be able to take Better Photos with iPhone OS 3.0?

iPhone firmware 3.0 event

Apple announced more than 100 new features for users in iPhone OS 3.0 during the special event to preview their next generation operating system for the iPhone.

But during the event, Apple didn't provide details of all the 100 new features in iPhone OS 3.0. Gizmodo is reporting that in addition to features like Cut, Copy & Paste, MMS, landscape keyboard support for iPhone apps such as Mail, SMS and Notes, and Push Notification Service, iPhone OS 3.0 will also improve image quality.

Folks at iPhones.ru took series of tests with iPhone OS 3.0 and have observed that the upcoming version of iPhone OS which is expected to be released to users this summer takes much better photos than the earlier version, iPhone OS 2.2.1.

As you can see from the side by side photos of the cat, there is significant improvement in the image quality. iPhone OS 2.2.1 blurred the photo of the cat cat while the photo taken with iPhone OS 3.0 has lot more clarity. Similar results were observed after taking 30 photos and not just one photo.

The second set of photos also show similar results:

Folks at Gizmodo point out:

Updated firmware, in general, can make a huge difference in the SLR world, so the theory isn't complete mad science.

In case you have installed the beta version of iPhone OS 3.0, please let us know if you have observed similar results.

We are curious to find out what do you think about the image quality of the photos in iPhone OS 3.0 in the comments section below.

Thanks Egypt for the tip!

  1. The difference appears to be a higher shutter speed on the 3.0 images. This may be the result of electronically boosting the sensitivity (i.e. amplifying the signal) as in an "ISO" increase in any digital camera.
This generally results in more noise. Without seeing an enlarged section of the image (preferably in a darker area) it's tough to tell.

Pretty interesting. But, paragraph 4 sentence 2 has a typo. The word "cat" is in there 2 times in a row. Might want to double check that.

  3. iPhoneHacks says:

Corrected the typo, thanks for highlighting it.

Holy crap! I thought it was just me! I take a lot of iPhone photos for my job, and in the daylight, the photos HAVE been clearer and less 'matted'. I have also noticed just a bit more in the sharpness department as well edges are clearer, and more detailed.

And here I was thinking that I was imagining it.

I'm running iPhone OS 3.0b4, by the way.

i agree. every time i would take a photo on 2.2.1 it would be almost impossible to get it unblurry, but recently i've noticed photos are much more clear and its a lot easier to take clear photos on 3.0.

  6. iPhoneHacks says:

That's great news, thanks lvcifer and delete3 for your prompt feedback.
