We have good news for Windows users who felt left out yesterday when the Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.0 for Mac to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.
iPhone Dev Team have released redsn0w multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 3.0. It also allows you to unlock the 1st generation iPhone (iPhone 2G).
If you have used QuickPwn before then redsn0w offers similar functionality.
- GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
- Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
- This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
- redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
- redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!).
Summary:
Redsn0w is a multi-platform, multi-device hacking tool so it can be used by both Windows and Mac users. However, there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC which Dev team will fix as soon as possible. .
1st Generation iPhone (iPhone 2G) users:
You can use redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 2G running iPhone OS 3.0.
iPhone 3G users:
You can use redsn0w to ONLY jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0. You should NOT use redsn0w if you are already using yellowsn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G.
iPhone 3G users will have to wait for Dev team to release UltraSn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0. Dev team haven't provided any update on when they will be releasing UltraSn0w.
Mac users can also use PwnageTool 3.0 which was released yesterday; if they want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility.
iPhone 3G S users:
redsn0w does NOT jailbreak or Unlock iPhone 3G S. Since iPhone 3G went on sale only yesterday, it will take them sometime to figure out a solution.
iPod Touch users:
redsn0w jailbreaks both 1st generation iPod Touch and 2nd generation iPod Touch.
We will keep you posted if there any updates to the current situation. If you were having trouble to jailbreaking your iPhone 3G or iPhone 2G and unlock iPhone 2G using the PwnageTool 3.0, can give redsn0w a shot.
But since the tool has just been released, please proceed with caution. As always, please don't forget to drop us a line in the comments below to tell us how it goes.

i may not be reading correctly, but if we want to unlock why do we have to wait for it to be released to jailbreak when it will be available via cydia anyway? (if we want to unlock just to show our tmobile friends it works)
Yeah, Dev Team have mentioned UltraSn0w will be released via Cydia and Icy.
But if you are using yellowsn0w you shouldnt update to iPhone OS 3.0 at this point until Ultrasn0w is available.
Question….i used quickpwn to jailbreak my iphone 3g. if i decide to use redsn0w to jailbreak my iphone 3g with OS3.0 it will wipe all the apps i had? Also if i do decide to use redsn0w can i simply install it while my iphone 3g is already jailbroken with quickpwn with the old OS.
No, using Redsn0w will wipe all your apps.
But if you are referring to Apps from the app store, you will be able to sync them back using iTunes from the backup.
If you are referring to jailbreak apps which I think you are referring to then check out jailbreak apps like Appsync or Aptbackup. Aptbackup didnt work out well for me.
It is recommended to reinstall the jailbreak apps after jailbreaking as some of the apps might not work on the new OS.
Lastly, you should use redsn0w if you only want to jailbreak your iPhone 3G. If you want to also unlock it then you should avoid it for now.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS : I tried jailbreak on WINDOWS 7 but redsn0w kept crashing. So I ran it in compatibility mode for windows xp and then ran it as an administrator. It worked!. Here’s how you do it
i) Right Click on Redsnow.exe
ii) Click on Properties
iii )Switch to Compatibility tab on the top.
iv) Check ” Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP ”
v) Start the application by right clicking on redsn0w. exe file and click on run as administrator
im on vista and it was crashing but now its worked
Works like a charm. I have been doing this with 3 Iphones now and I am about to test a NEW (Secret Software) firmware 3.v7A391. I'll let you know whats on it. If you have any questions let me know. Also teathering on ATT is quick and easy.

I'm having trouble with the redsnow software. It keeps locking my phone saying its waiting for reboot, but it never does anything.
HI are you using windows vista? my iphone was doing the same i would suggest trying these steps.
Right Click on Redsnow.exe
ii) Click on Properties

so I have jailbroken my phone with the new redsnow but my apps that I downloaded from appulous don't sync onto my iphone…??? I get an error 0xE8008001 ..Any ideas? they worked fine on my jailbroken 2.2.1 firmware….
Hi go to to cydia add the source cydia.hackulo.us once the source is installed install appsync for os 3.0 then reboot iphone and try apps again.

Redsn0w is a very good tools that run in CLI DOS interface.. Very esay n JB process.. And very fast too..I have did mine..No problem at all..
Pandora is inoperable and crashes after jailbreaking with redsn0w.

I just got it to work. I was using the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore ispw at first and it waited to reboot, then I tried it with the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore ispw and it worked.

Nope. & redsnow does not allow you to choose to install it, it does it by default now.
