We have good news for Windows users who felt left out yesterday when the Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.0 for Mac to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.
iPhone Dev Team have released redsn0w multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking tool for iPhone OS 3.0. It also allows you to unlock the 1st generation iPhone (iPhone 2G).
If you have used QuickPwn before then redsn0w offers similar functionality.
- GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
- Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
- This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
- redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
- redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!).
Summary:
Redsn0w is a multi-platform, multi-device hacking tool so it can be used by both Windows and Mac users. However, there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC which Dev team will fix as soon as possible. .
1st Generation iPhone (iPhone 2G) users:
You can use redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 2G running iPhone OS 3.0.
iPhone 3G users:
You can use redsn0w to ONLY jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0. You should NOT use redsn0w if you are already using yellowsn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G.
iPhone 3G users will have to wait for Dev team to release UltraSn0w to unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0. Dev team haven't provided any update on when they will be releasing UltraSn0w.
Mac users can also use PwnageTool 3.0 which was released yesterday; if they want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility.
iPhone 3G S users:
redsn0w does NOT jailbreak or Unlock iPhone 3G S. Since iPhone 3G went on sale only yesterday, it will take them sometime to figure out a solution.
iPod Touch users:
redsn0w jailbreaks both 1st generation iPod Touch and 2nd generation iPod Touch.
We will keep you posted if there any updates to the current situation. If you were having trouble to jailbreaking your iPhone 3G or iPhone 2G and unlock iPhone 2G using the PwnageTool 3.0, can give redsn0w a shot.
But since the tool has just been released, please proceed with caution. As always, please don't forget to drop us a line in the comments below to tell us how it goes.

I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have a 3G phone locked to AT&T. I am currently in Europe and will be here for the next couple of months. I want to JB and Unlock as soon as UltraSn0w comes out. I have my original Sim card here. Do I JB it with the original sim even though there is no AT&T network here for activation? Does the activation need to contact AT&T? I'm just not sure how this part of it works.

what if your 1st gen iPhone is ALREADY jailbroken? should i still use this Redsn0w? and my other question is, even though my phone is already jailbroken, and when i plug it in to my computer and then itunes asks me to update to 3.0, will i lose anything if i update it?

Thanks for this, everything works perfectly on my new iPhone 3G. Didn't know Cydia had so much to offer. I mainly wanted to hide unused apps and display a background behind them and it was all accomplished in a matter of minutes.

I upgraded my AT&T 2G Iphone to 3.0, i live in the UK so it was previously unlocked, After upgrade to 3.0 lock stayed in place but could not activate.
Used Redsn0w all OK, it redid the unlock, works fine!
Did not have to reload apps!

wierd.. Cydia has been crashing ALOT with 3.0 even more than when it first came out way back when. Also many more failed installs. I doubt its Cydias code and I bet its 3.0 some how counter acting it. Also the ones that have succeded ive had to hit install, they will download then crash then re-install and it will install it fine without haveing to re download it, yet i cant find were it was downloaded to. I dunno wierd but just wanted to put that out to see if any one else has had the same issues and if iPhoneHacks happens to know anything about it. Thanks.

Go to any of the links provided on this page, then go download the file. Once you have the redsnow file you will need the ipsw, which you can get here http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/. Then you open up the redsnow by right click and running as administrator, then just follow all the steps. If you are using windows vista you will have to go to properties and then go to compatability and select Windows XP. Thats how i got it to work for me!
After you update to 3.0 it's in
"C:\Users\Aministrator\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates"

Listen, all those having trouble with redsn0w freezing and the iphone freezing at points in the upgrade, sure i did the winxp capability mode and run as administer, but that didnt do it for me. For me, Redsnow would not work in my Vista 64bit. I tried it in another vista 32bit computer and worked perfectly. I think it really doesnt like the 64bit vista…
I successfully jailbroke my iphone with the RedSn0w.
But because my iphone was already jailbroken before this, I did a restore to upgrade to OS 3.0. I forgot to copy my contact file and calendar file before I did the restore and I lost these info (I don't sync with Outlook).
Anyone knows what are the filenames for contacts and calendar?

my original iPhone 3G with 3.0 has been jailbroken successfully. but when i got to synch it again with iTunes it just views all the music and video as one chunck of data and will say the device is full. when i got to the ipod in the iPhone it says "no music"

I tried with five iphone 3G with 3.0 firmware. Everything work except when I downloaded any themes, Winterboard these iphones couldn't not reboot. They're all frozen! I have to restore them again and not using the winterboard.
I hope they can clean out the bugs!

I also was waiting for QP 3.0 because of how fun and easy it was to JB my 3g. Since the 3.0 was realeased by apple, I have done some research to see if redsnow was as easy as many said it is to JB the new 3.0, and guess what guys?? It is easy!!! and I consider myself a noob!
Ok so this is the process of my JB with redsnow…
First, I didn’t want to take any chances and update my JB iPhone from 2.2.1 to 3.0 without restoring my phone first, because I had a feeling it would somehow mess up the JB, so I restored my iPhone then did a backup to save my info.
Second, I updated my iTunes to 8.2.
Third, I updated to 3.0. Smooth update with no problems.
Fourth, I then waited a couple days for the new QP to be released, but I was tired of my boring phone. Then Redsnow was finally out for windows, I read up on it and decided to go for it! I went on utube and under search I entered ‘windows redsnow’ one of the first two videos that popped up has step by step instructions for redsnow install.

Fifth, I did the JB process with redsnow and it was a breeze. Just as easy as QP!! Yes I had to re install all my JB apps from cydia again cuz of course restoring the iPhone did delete all JB info, but I didn’t mind that at all! And some apps aren’t working yet but in time they wiill get updated thru cydia so it’s all good, see some apps aren’t 3.0 ready yet and that’s why some crash. But overall I’m happy with new JB iPhone!!! Good luck guys and happy jailbreaking to all!! Even noobs like me can do it!!
Quick question. I'm new to jailbroken iPhones. I have the first generation iPhone that is running 3.0 update. I just jailbroke my phone with red snow. Everything works great and it is truly amazing how much more oppertunity is available now. My question is I need to free up some more room on my phone. I heard iTunes 8.2 was horrble with the jailbroken phones so I downgraded to iTunes 8.1.1. I try to hook in my phone and it says due to 3.0 I need to upgrade to 8.2. Can I re-install 8.2 iTunes and sync my phone to get some of my music files off without messing up my new jailbreak? Would that be the easiest way? Any help would be appreciated.
You heard 8.2 was horrible? Yet you used it to update to 3.0 succesfully? Are you catching a clue yet? I believe you can update to 8.2 again just do some research on you tube or I'm sure someone has the answer, be patient.
