iPhone OS 3.0 Released: 100 New Features Including Copy & Paste, MMS, Spotlight, Bluetooth, Push Notification & More

iPhone OS 3.0

Apple has released iPhone OS 3.0 (Build 7A341) just as they had announced at WWDC 2009 Keynote address.

Apple had given us a preview of their generation iPhone OS at a special event in March which has more than 100 new features.

iPhone OS 3.0 is now available via iTunes.

Here are some of the features to look out for in iPhone OS 3.0:

Cut, Copy & Paste: Users will be able to cut, copy and paste text. The blocks of text could be selected from application and web by simply taping the content. You can check this page to find out how it works.

Landscape Mode: iPhone OS 3.0 will allow users to use iPhone's virtual keyboard in landscape mode in mails, messages, notes.

MMS: Users will be able to send and receive photos, audio, vCard (contact cards), and ‘location' with the ability to take photos and videos right inside the message.

Apple announced that MMS support for AT&T will only become available in late summer although a number of carriers across the globe will support MMS.

Note: MMS is not supported on first-generation iPhone. Sending video via MMS is not supported on iPhone 3G, since, the camera can't capture video.

Movies and TV Shows direct download: Apple announced that with iPhone OS 3.0, users will be able to rent and download movies, tv shows directly onto their iPhones.

Apple already allows users to download songs, podcasts and iPhone apps over the air using iPhone’s data connection if the file size is less than 10 MB, if the file size is more than 10 MB, users will have to download it over Wi-Fi. Thus, it is anyone's guess that Apple is indirectly stating that this feature will only work over Wi-Fi.

Tethering Capability: iPhone OS 3.0 will also bring the ability to tether the iPhone to feed a data connection to your computer and surf the internet. However it will depend on carriers to add tethering support on their networks.

Tethering is not currently offered in the U.S. and some other countries. AT&T was absent from the list of  carriers that allow tethering. Some of the networks that allow tethering include names such as bharti, Telefonica, Hutchinson Telecom, Orange, O2, T-Mobile,Vodafone, and Chunghwa Telecom.

Safari Improvements: Safari on iPhone OS 3.0 is now 3 times faster in iPhone OS 3.0 and will have the autofill username and password feature.

Safari also brings support for HTTP streaming audio and video. It will automatically determine best quality for your connection

Find My iPhone and wipe feature: iPhone OS 3.0 will include a feature called 'Find my iPhone'. The service will obtain iPhone's location and make it available to MobileMe user on request if the unit is lost or stolen.

The users will be able to protect their privacy by sending remote wipe instructions, which will wipe off all data from lost or stolen iPhones.

Peer to Peer Connectivity: This will allow users to play multiplayer games and to share information.

In App Purchase: Apple has introduced a new business model, which adds more ways for the developers to charge users for an iPhone app. The models are Subscriptions, charging for additional content or levels.

ScrollMotion who creates ebook apps for the App Store demoed its new iPhone App that will make use of the In-app purchase to download books directly through the iPhone App.

Third-party Accessories: This feature will allow Accessory manufacturers to create applications to interface with their hardware accessories through Dock Connector or Bluetooth.

As an example, Line6 and Planet Waves demoed their app that allows you to control your guitar and Amp using your iPhone.

Push Notification Service: One of the most anticipated features of iPhone OS 3.0 and Apple's solution or workaround for the ability to run third party iPhone apps in the background especially for applications like Instant Messenger, Facebook etc.

Apart from the above features, iPhone OS 3.0 will also sport the following features:

Video Recording and Editing: With the iPhone OS 3.0 users will be able to carry out basic video editing on their iPhone 3G S. The 3-megapixel improved camera and video recording capability in iPhone 3G S are sure to be a delight.

Note: This feature will not be available to the first generation iPhone and iPhone 3G users.

Spotlight (Universal Search Feature): Spotlight for iPhone will allow the user to search contacts, emails, calendars, notes etc. Spotlight for iPhone will now be your new left-most home screen. You can just start typing in the search box which will bring up a list of everything that matches your search. Users will be able to search contacts, messages etc and will also be able to launch the searched applications.

Voice Memos: Users will be able to record notes, lectures, interviews, or any audio on the go using the built-in microphone or using the mic on their headset. Users will also to share their recorded voice files either as an email or MMS.

Bluetooth Support: iPhone OS 3.0 will support bluetooth allowing users to use bluetooth stereo headphones and speaker with their iPhone 3G.

Turn By Turn GPS: With iPhone OS 3.0, users will be able to see third party Turn by Turn GPS apps for the iPhone. However, developers will need to include their own maps due to licensing issues. TomTom demoed its turn-by-turn GPS application for the iPhone with voice navigation, which was pretty cool.

SMS App enhancements: Users will be able to forward and delete multiple text messages and will be able to use the landscape mode.

Parental Controls: With iPhone OS 3.0 Apple will introduce age-based parental control for iPhone Apps. This feature will allow users to restrict kids from accessing certain music, video and app.

Multiple Account log-in: With iPhone OS 3.0 users will be able to create and log in to multiple iTunes account on their iPhones.

Battery Indicator: With the iPhone OS 3.0, the battery indicator, in addition to the current battery bar, will display the remaining battery power in percentage.

Support for Exchange: Mail, iCal, and Address Book now all support Exchange.

Automatic Wi-Fi: Upon connection iPhone will automatically logs you in to a previously joined Wi-Fi hotspot.

Sync Note: Users will now be able to sync their notes on their PCs or Macs.

You Tube Login: Users will have an option to login to their You Tube accounts, save and sync the bookmarks and to rate favorites.

Shake to Shuffle: Shake your iPhone with OS 3.0 and it will shuffle to a different song in your music library.

New Languages: iPhone improves it multi-lingual capabilities by supporting 30 languages and more than 40 keyboard layouts.

iPhone OS 3.0 requires iTunes 8.2 so you will have to first updrade your iTunes to 8.2 to download the latest iPhone OS.

If you have jailbroken and/or unlocked your iPhone then we would recommend you to wait for iPhone Dev Team to release their latest tools. We will keep you posted so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks.

Folks, if you do not fall in the above category and are planning to update to the latest firmware, please do let us know how it goes.

Thanks Chris and John for the heads up.

Update 1:

It looks like Apple's servers are getting hammered with upgrade requests, as you can see from reader comments, many of them are facing issues downloading iPhone OS 3.0.

I guess the only option is to either wait or keep trying, I have tried multiple times, I have got network connection timeout and session timeout errors.

We will keep you posted if the situation improves.

Update 2:

I finally got the update so looks like things are getting better, let us know if you folks still hitting an issue downloading the latest OS.

  1. Mudshark says:

oh, shit…..i forgot the important part…disable your internet connection first!!!

  2. drex1x says:

Like mudshark said.. WHEN YOUR TRYING TO UPDATE.. FIRST GO AHEAD AND OPEN UP CONTROL PANEL > GO TO YOUR CONNECTION > DISABLE ( DO THIS RIGHT BEFORE YOU START DOING THE ACTIVATION SERVICE ) this worked like a charm for me!

  3. Cheeze439 says:

But settings is one of the apps I had hidden (as it was in a folder under a jailbreak app)… but thanks anyway.

  4. ZedSefi says:

I think because it is still iPhone 3G while the new battery features are part of new iPhone 3GS.

  5. ZedSefi says:

    Important question:

My iPhone 3G is software unlocked by Yellowsn0w, and there is no official new jailbreak/unlock software released yet. I don't mind waiting for jailbreak software to be released on Friday or later, but should I risk everything and upgrade now through iTunes then jailbreak/unlock my iPhone later? I am afraid once I lose the ability to unlock my iPhone then I won't become able to unlock the iPhone again because baseband may became updated on new OS 3.0
If it is safe, can anybody please confirm to me that, after you upgraded your iPhone to the new iPhone OS 3.0, that your baseband remained the same one that Yellowsn0w (and upcoming Ultrasn0w) are supposed to be working on it? Cheers.

  6. Michael says:

Ok! a good solution to the 3259 error is to disable your anti-virus completely until the end of the installation. This goes out to people especially using NOD32 because that is my anti-virus and disabling it helped.

  7. T. Payne says:

anyone having trouble downloading apps from app store after update?

  8. metromepmb says:

yay i installed on my iphone 2g and cant activate now :P
Oh well will have to use my 3g until friday

  9. Bermuda Brains says:

You know if you guys that don't know you can also get the new software from http://www.apple.com. I was having problems too downloading but I tried the website and got it in 2 mins.

  10. dylan says:

I updated from a jailbroken iphone and now everything i had in my categories folders won't show up on my iphone once i updated to 3.0, and now the app store says it is installed and will show up in my itunes app folder but on my actual phone. Has anyone else had this problem?

  11. T Payne says:

Kind of, all the things I had hidden with poof are still hidden after the update except iTunes

  12. M. AT says:

i just update my iphone but does not shows the percentage of the battary , and how i suppose to use the peer to peer games ?

  13. richboy says:

for everybody dat doesnt know, u can still enable tethering on the OS 3.0 running on at&t ! yes i said it, u can use your iphone 3G to tether an internet connection from an at&t iphone.

  14. richboy says:

i updated today my at&t iphone and im tethering the connection to my mac to write this post…….i know how to do it on a mac but not too sure if that method works on a PC.

  15. Dave says:

okay, how do you set up tethering on a mac through at&t?

  16. Matt says:

Restore and set up as new phone instead of restoring from backup. Or you will just have to wait for the jailbreak then you can use poof or sbsettings to unhide your apps. I tried the restrictions method up above on an restore a couple months back and had no luck.

  17. richboy says:

    this is what you do:
    1. You need to download the carrier file settings from http://gizmodo.com/5175391/ how-to-enable-3g-tethering-in-your-iphone-30-now and save it somewhere ( I chose desktop) DONT USE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO ENABLE TETHERING FROM THAT WEBSITE, JUST GET THE FILE AND MOVE TO INSTRUCTIONS 2
    2. then copy this: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
    3. then open terminal on a mac that you sync itunes with. then paste the copied info into terminal and hit enter.
    4. once you have done this make sure you hit sync to sync your iphone, u dont need to let it sync entirely, u can just hit the "x" in the itunes screen to stop it then hold options and click restore.
    5. It will then ask you to chose what file to restore. search and go to where you saved the att carrier file
it is called (att_us.ipcc) it will NOT be grayed out if you run that terminal command. If by chance it is grayed out, run the command again, then go to options restore and it will then be available to click on.
    6. Chose the file and restore. It will then add it to your iphone as the instructions above show
    7. once done you can go into settings on iphone while its connected to your computer, then go to general, then network and you will see where you can turn tethering on. I was so excited. I also agree that it is pretty fast with 3g service + it is free since you're only using data from your iphone data plan.

  18. mo says:

IVE BEEN WAITING ALL DAY FOR A JAILBREAK. I KNOW THEY HAVE IT DONE. I THOUGHT RIGHT AFTER THE RELEASE OF 3.0?? DIDNT HAPPEN, I DONT WANT TO WAIT TILL FRIDAY :(

    sorry bout caps :D

  19. WILL says:

I have a 3g I obivsiously want to jailbreak and unlock my phone should I wait till Friday to update to os 3.0 and jailbreak what would you guys recommend.

  20. Don says:

For me I'm going to wait until dev team release the tools & ultrasnow this friday before I upgrade to 3.0

  21. don says:

If you upgrade to 3.0 now you won't be able to use it, better to wait for the dev team to release the tools first.

  22. iPhoneHacks says:

If you update your iPhone to iPhone OS 3.0 you will lose both your jailbreak and unlock.

You will have to wait for Dev Team to release tools to jailbreak it which they had mentioned will be released very soon and will have to wait until Friday to unlock it.

  23. ifonGimp says:

If the jailbreak didn't come out when they said, what makes you think that when Friday rolls around we won't be left in the same situation.

  24. iPhoneHacks says:

One of our readers, GoogleMyName had provided the following solution to make the apps visible which seems to have worked for some users. You can try it:

    Settings>
General> Restrictions and enable this. This will unhide all your
apps. You can then go back and turn restrictions off. After you turn it
back off, all of your hidden apps that were in categories will be back

  25. thepartyguy says:

  28. Dr. DRE1919 says:

Is there a link to the new version of the jailbreak yet?

I just restored my iphone so I could upgrade my Iphone to OFW 3.0.

None of my apps work and I dont know if I should jail break with Quick Pwn and Iphone OFW 3.0 Beta 5 or just sit tight to be replied?

I don't want to jail break my iphone with a unooficial version or an old version I want the latest one.

    CAn someone help please?

  29. TD says:

I had a jailbroken iPhone 3G and updated to OS 3.0 lastnight with no problems. All the Jailbreak apps are obviously now gone after the update. However, I am returning my phone to Apple for a warranty replacement.
Can I confirm that there is no way for apple to know my phone was jailbroken and my warranty is valid?

  30. iPhoneHacks says:

I had written an article last year on how to re-virginize the iPhone which should be helpful in your case:
    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/10/virginizeiphone.html

  31. crystallattice says:

Am I the only one who is hugely dissapointed by 3.0? MMS and tethering does not work even though my carrier supports it… have to use hacks to enable it now.

Voice memo's needs you to shout in the mic to be able to hear the recording later and the stupid battery percentage thing "only works on 3GS", what complete BS.

I had a app on 2.2.1 that could show battery % left. What's up with voice control not working on 3G, vlingo works on 3G why can't apple support 3G. Think we need some serious hacker util to enable some of the much wanted 3.0 features for the normal 3G user.

PS I got 3.0 from a direct link yesterday, works much better than trying to use itunes – it told me that 2.2.1 was the latest – even while I was busy downloading 3.0!

  32. Crystallattice,
I hear you my friend, I'm at a loss at words, I guess we are used to expect a whole lot from Apple that our expectations got raised too high, when in fact the 3.0 turns out for ME to be a bug fix mainly. Again, for me , because everyone is different, the only added value of 3.0 was Spotlight, nothing else, the rest are features that I have no use for ( MMS, tethering,…). I was hoping 3.0 is going to revolutionize my iphone just like last year when iphone 3G rocked the cellphone world, but I got disappointed and badly mind you. Many of the features that could have really added value would have been, video capturing ( why is that 3GS only ????), how about battery indicator ? how about bluetooth synching with macbooks/PC ( sync email/calendars/ in case the cable is not arms length ). Overall 3.0 looks more like bug fixes and really didn't warrant huge expectations from me .

  33. One more thing, the find and remote wipe would have been a really glad tiding if it was avaialbe for the average iphone 3.0 users instead of being a MobileMe privileges. I guess , really it would be nice if I had some time to look into writing some application to do something similar, unfortunately, no time at hands ;-(

  34. Madison says:

I need help….I get all the way til it says updating ram and then it never will load all the way…its like it freezes up and wont finish…what should i do now???

  35. susan says:

thanks Michael!! I had been trying for 3 hours, then found this – turned off NOD32 and it worked like a charm.

thanks to others too – very helpful stream of convo here.
