Jailbreak iPhone on OS 3.0 using redsn0w for Windows

The iPhone Dev Team released updated version of PwnageTool for Mac users and Redsn0w for both Mac and Windows users to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0.

Here is our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 using Redsn0w for Mac users.

Windows users can check this step-by-step guide which we had posted earler.

An important preparatory step before jailbreaking your iPhone 3G is to take a backup of your iPhone. Please refer to this post for more details.

Please note that Redsn0w does not jailbreak iPhone 3GS.

As with any hack, please proceed with caution as jailbreaking your iPhone could void it's warranty.

Following are the step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G running the iPhone OS 3.0 using redsn0w for Mac:

Step 1: Create a folder on your desktop and name it Pwnage.

Step 2: Now download RedSn0w from here and put it inside the Pwnage folder that you just created.

Also, download the latest 3.0 firmware from the location given below and put it in the same Pwnage folder.

You can not reboot your phone after you jailbrek it. It will freeze up causing you to have to restore it??

  • larry

I've been unable to use this jailbreak; it runs through just fine but I lose my cell network (shows as Not Available). Just tried again running through the Mac step by step and still no joy. WiFi is fine, but no 3G or EDGE 16g 3g iphone, had the 2.2.1 jailbreak running just fine. What am I missing?

  • gappochan

does this thing work also on a PPC Mac running on OS X 10.4.11? tried it many times, both with Redsn0w and Pwnage and with btoh it just crashed practically at the beginning of the whole thing. I am just giving up on this jailbreak… it ain't worth the time it takes to get it done and have nothing to show for it… I am still stuck on 3.0 on a 16GB iPhone 3G.

    wassup with this? any intakes?

  • Sorry to hear that you hit an issue. Try to restore your iPhone by putting it in DFU mode. You can follow these steps to achieve this:Connect your iPhone to your computer.Turn iPhone off.Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized. At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

  • Ron Borum

After completing this jailbreak is the iphone suppose to boot-up showing the APPLE Icon??? I installed Cydia & Icy. When I open Cydia it states I need an essential upgrade. I tried doing that and got a error of some type. Can't install any programs from Cydia or Icy without errors. Please any suggestions…..

  • Felix

yes redsn0w does work on 10.4.11 tiger I just used it unlock my iphone 3g running 3.0 Firmware you just have to follow the instructions carefully, however remember one thing when you get to the last part where it tells you to hold the bottom button for 30 sec hold it a little while longer then walla you will see the download icon appear then the pineapple man appears. from that you just wait until it completes it's process, after that is dones than u have to into cydia via wifi and download ultrasn0w. if you need help email me @

  • Felix

Also pwnage tool 3.0 will not work on ppc running 10.4.11 tiger because u need have your running intel dual u know that's y redsn0w was design for people like us who just have regular pps tiger 10.4.11 tiger

  • hey i was putting it into dfu mode like it said in the guide, i had it switched off and held down the buttons for the right amount of time,

now its just stuck on the bit saying waiting for reboot…

    and it wont reboot.

  • Pranab Sen

    Hi and bobbybobob,

I had the same problem following the above steps with redsn0w 0.8. It was stuck at Waiting for reboot after the phone had successfully entered DFU mode. I then tried the same steps with redsn0w 0.8 and it worked like a charm.

Btw, I had updated my firmware to 3.0.1 via iTunes before jailbreaking.

  • Pranab Sen

Sorry it should be redsn0w 0.7, not 0.8.

  • Pippi Longstocking

redsn0w quits unexpectedly right after step 10 when I click next. I have a PPC but run leopard. Anyone have advice?

  • Katsu

Hi Pranab Sen, did it work for you now? i have just updated my firmware up to 3.0.1 via itunes and need to jailbreak it — please let me know if I should do this or what you did to make it work. Thanks.

I have a powerbook G4 and when I download redsn0w to my computer, it is not a zipped folder it just looks like a blank page. I click the link to download where it says "here"

    Im running Leopard.

  • Andre

I had the waiting for reboot, I unplugged cable and quickly plugged back in again and it worked.

  • Phil

If anyone finds themselves trying this with a G4 PPC and Tiger 10.4.11 (I had an old iPhone 2G and can only go to 3.0 because of Tiger and iTunes 8.2) I also got hung at reboot – the quick unplug trick Andre mentioned works…
