Purplesn0w - New Solution to Unlock iPhone 3GS Released

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS using purplera1n

George Hotz (aka Geohot) who had released a software called purplera1n to jailbreak iPhone 3GS only for Windows users before iPhone Dev Team  released RedSn0w has now released purplesn0w to unlock iPhone 3GS.

He claims that his iPhone 3GS unlock solution is better than UltraSn0w which was released by the iPhone Dev Team to unlock all versions of iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0.

Geohot had this to say on his blog on why he felt purplesn0w is better than UltraSn0w:

First off, what is purplesn0w? It's a soft unlock for your 3GS that I'd actually use day to day. It's not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn't add a task to your baseband. It's very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That's it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!

He plans to publish more details on how the unlock works soon.

He has provided the following instructions to use his unlocking solution:

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
Disable 3G if you don't have it(like T-Mobile).
Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

So if you observed problems with UltraSn0w then try purplesn0w to unlock iPhone 3GS. But please don't forget to take a backup of your iPhone (refer to this post for more details) and also proceed with caution as it could void it's warranty.

If you plan to check it out then please let us know how it goes in the comment section below.
