As you are aware, George Hotz (aka Geohot) had released a software called purplera1n to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.
This allows the users to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0. Here is our step-by-step guide to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using purplera1n for Windows users.
Before we start some important points:
- Purplera1n is currently available only for Windows users.
- This one is only for iPhone 3GS users, if you are an iPhone 3G users, please checkout our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 for Windows or this one for Mac users.
- Jailbreak apps like WinterBoard, VOiPOver3G etc don't seem to be working on iPhone 3GS, so you might have to wait for the developers to release updated version of the jailbreak apps.
- This guide only shows you how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, it does not unlock it.
- As with any hack, please proceed with caution as jailbreaking your iPhone could void it's warranty.
Step 1: Download purplera1n from http://www.purplera1n.com. Please ensure you have downloaded the latest version. It is currently RC2 in which Geohot has fixed quite a few issues.
Step 2: Once the exe is saved on your desktop, double click on it. Click on the make it ra1n button.
Step 3: This will put your iPhone in to recovery mode. A picture of GeoHot will replace the recovery mode screen on your device.
purplera1n will run, which will reboot your device.
Step 4: After your device reboots, you will be able to see a new app icon on the SpringBoard named Freeze. Click on it to launch
Step 5: This will open up Freeze, now click on the Install Cydia button at the bottom.
Step 6: The cydia installation process will download cydia and once the status changes to Finished!, you must reboot your iPhone.
Step 7: After you have rebooted your iPhone, launch Cydia and let it run all the necessary updates.
Update:
Please note that this guide only jailbreaks iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0, you will need to install UltraSn0w via Cydia to unlock iPhone 3GS. You can checkout our step-by-step guide to unlock iPhone 3GS using UltraSn0w.

I had the same problem using Windows Vista/7 machines. But when I tried it on my sister's Windows XP it worked perfectly well from first attempt. It could be that your operating system is not compatible.
Go to Cydelete properties in Settings, then allow the option of letting it deleting third party apps that were not installed by Cydia. Then go ahead and delete Freeze. Do not forget to toggle that setting back to its original status as it could be dangerous to leave it allowed (it could technically means that intentionally or accedentally you may have the risk of deleting one of the original native iPhone apps) as you will not be able to get that back once deleted.

Worked the first time. All I wanted was Cydia. Don't care for unlocking.
can someone please direct me on where to get help. everything worked great, then I went ahead and installed FWchanger, told the app to change FW to 2.0 to try and install a few things i couldnt get working on the 3.0 FW, and now my phone is jacked. iTunes wont even restore/recognize nothing. it has also hijacked my apps and removed them from the phone which now I cannot get back on.

Man what planet are you comming from, He is the smartest guy I ever hear of. He jailbroke the 1st gen iPhone, Zibri and dev Team used His exploids to unlock All iPhone versions. without Him none of these could be possible or at least It could take much, much longer to be done.

Hi i'm a newbie here. Tried purplera1an several time no luck. I dont have any activated AT&T sim or others coz i live outside US or UK, got my 3gs from ebay. What happened is;
- restore w itunes, only get 'slide for emergency' no SB or icons at all, then
- run purplera1n on Xp, process smoothly until reboot n itunes appear. Still no SB or icons at all, just 'slide for emergency' and usb cable – itunes image.
Could anyone please help? Im really desperate to unlock my new phone.

Shit…I installed Winterboard again now my phone sucks again. thought it got updated but guess not. just waiting at the apple logo forever. Although it was actually blinking now. I give up already. It went to safemode but has the winterboard icon. I tapped the winterboard icon and it worked. gonna try rebot again and see. hey it works. i put ishine theme on my 3gs. chee woo!

i couldnt delete the freeze app so i hid it using bossprefs
I used this and now have a 3GS jailbroken. I've even installed winterboard 0.9.2958-2 and it works fine!
ok so i ran purplerain and my iohone 3gs is now stuck in recovery mode. my computer is telling me that there is a problem with purplerain and keeps shutting down the program. any advice? oh yea my phone is still stuck in recovery mode!

To delete Freeze Icon:
Step 1)(Note: I do not recommend that we hide this icon using SBSettings as you may have this problem after you restore). Load Cydia and install “CyDelete”. Use the cydia search. By the way, notice how blazing fast Cydia runs on the 3gs! Wow!
Note: if springboard spins forever after the “restart springboard” just hold home and power until the iPhone shuts off, then power it back on. This seems to happen sometimes on 3.0 the first time mobile substrate installs. It all works after.
Step 2) Enable non Cydia deleting in CyDelete. Launch settings app and navigate to the bottom of the first page to find the settings bundle.
Step 3) Tap CyDelete and enable “Non-Cydia Deletion” (the top option).
Step 4) After the springboard reloads, hold any icon to get into wiggle mode and remove Freeze.
Step 5) Optional. You no longer need CyDelete. You can uninstall this in Cydia now. I recommend keeping it however. It’s a very easy way to uninstall Cydia apps and you now have enough memory in your 3GS that you will not notice any overhead having it.

I got the exact same problem after intelliscreen, even after a couple of restores and purple rain, freeze was not there. So i restarted my system here i am downloading cydia via freeze again !

To be honest, this is my first time jailbreaking. wiht sbsettings and winterboards only its worth it. But, if its going to crash now and then after a wierd app install / deinstall…. Its not worth it as my music collection is around 26GB, which takes like an hour or two to get transferred
