The iPhone Dev team had earlier announced that they will hold off on releasing their jailbreak for iPhone 3GS on OS 3.0 as they expect Apple to close the hole in their upcoming iPhone OS 3.1.
Well, the iPhone Dev team finally decided to release their jailbreak solution because there was a lot of demand from iPhone 3GS users and also because Geohot had released his method (purplera1n) to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.
Update:
iPhone 3GS Users can't restore to iPhone OS 3.0 as Apple has stopped signing iPhone OS 3.0 and iPhone 3.0.1 firmware files after releasing iPhone OS 3.1, so you can no longer use this guide to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS.

Here is our step by step guide on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using redsn0w on Windows.
Before we start some important points:

This guide only shows you how to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, it does not unlock it.

As with any hack, please proceed with caution as jailbreaking your iPhone could void its warranty.
Step 1: Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop.
Step 2: Download redsn0w from here and put it in the Pwnage folder that you had just created.
Step 3: Also download the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware from the location below and put it under the Pwnage folder. Please use Firefox to download the firmware as IE seems to automatically extract the file.
iPhone OS 3.0 (iPhone 3GS) - iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
Step 4: Now extract the redsn0w executable (.exe) from the zip file into the Pwnage folder.
Step 5: Now connect your iPhone 3GS to your computer and launch the iTunes.
Step 6: Select your iPhone from the list of devices mentioned on the left hand side. Click and hold down the Shift key and click on the Restore button.
Step 7: Go to the Pwnage folder. Select the firmware with the extension .ipsw and click the Open button.
Step 8: Once iTunes finishes updating your iPhone, launch the redsn0w.exe from the Pwnage folder on your desktop.
Step 9: After the redsn0w opens up click on the Browse button shown below.
Step 10: Now, select the firmware ipsw that you had placed into Pwnage folder and click Open button.
Step 11: After the firmware has been verified, click the Next button to continue.
Step 12: Make sure that you select the check box for Cydia and click the Next button.
Step 13: Now redsn0w will instruct you on how to put your iPhone 3GS into the recovery mode. Disconnect your iPhone from the computer and power it OFF. Hold down the Home button while you reconnect your iPhone 3GS to the computer.
Note: Do not let go of the Home button until redsn0w detects your iPhone and begins the installation.
Step 14: Your iPhone will now reboot itself.
Step 15: redsn0w will then start to upload the new RAM Disk and the kernel on your iPhone.
Step 16: redsn0w will notify you when it's completed. Click on the Finish button.
Step 17: Your iPhone 3GS should take about 5 minutes to reboot, and once your device finishes rebooting, it will be jailbroken with Cydia available on your iPhone's home screen.

i jailbreak my iphone 3Gs with redsnow, i installed sbsettings and winterboard and now my iphone volume buttons reboot my iphone in safemode…if a use my volume botton it does that…what can be the problem???Help…

Its kind of way off topic but i have noticed that i can’t see missed call on my lockscreen on my Iphone 3gs and 2g both running 3.0 firmware with jaibreak on it. Does anyone noticed that or its just me.

I didt have any probs with rain, also installing winderboard with snow makes my phone shutoff during reboot. (apple logo then blank screen!)

First make sure you have the latest mobile substrate from Cydia. Just run Cydia and if you are on an older version you will be prompted to upgrade.
If this doesn't resolve then remove Winterboard and sbsetting one at a time to figure out the culprit.

After jailbreak, everything working great EXCEPT… I no longer have the missed calls displayed before going to the home screen. To see if I have missed calls, I have to acctually go to the recent call list. Any ideas? It used to let me know if I had missed calls before going into the missed call list.

I cant get into Cyda now after jailbreaking my 3GS with redsn0w. Cyda worked fine for a day (after ugrading) but now it boots me out afer getting into the program. Anyone else have this same issue?

Yes, to make those changes it must be jailbroken.
I have jailbroken my wife's 3gs (AT&T USA – don't know if it makes a difference) about a week ago, it was super easy and it's working beautifully! No problems so far. The phone is NOT unlocked (I think I read on this forum that unlocking it is still buggy). I just started messing around with the sounds on MY iPhone 3G (not 3GS) with out any problems, but will try it on my wife's 3GS this week and if I don't update this post, it means everything is fine.
TO CHANGE SOUNDS:
1. Jailbreak iPhone which will install 'Cydia'.
2. Open Cydia and let it update.
3. Search and install 'Winterboard'.
3. Browse 'Themes (Sounds)' to find what you want, and install the ones you like.
CONCLUSION:
* Jailbreaking 3GS – WORTH IT!
* Install Winterboard to modify all aspects of the iPhone's appearance and sounds.
* ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – install 'app sync' which will allow you to install hacked (FREE) apps & games. Do this:
1. use Cydia and add the following source:
(Manage–>Sources–>Edit–>Add–> http://cydia.hackulo.us
2. Then search for "3.0" and install "AppSync".
3. Get all your free games and apps online from http://appulo.us/appdb/
4. Drag downloaded IPA files (the apps/games) into your iTunes library. Sync iPhone and WALA!

Well that's funny, because whenever I try to run redsn0w it crashes at the point where I have to connect iPhone in recovery mode. I'm running windows Vista, I'll try reinstalling the program.

I have downloaded the new itunes 8.2.1.6. Will the jailbreak still work on iphone 3gs? When I click on restore it says it will need to verify the restore with apple. This warning message is not listed on the step to step guide above
cydia cannot be loaded in opening screen
I had the same problem as soon as I let go of the home button windows said that the program had stopped working. I got it to work by unchecking the ICY. Work perfectly IDK if the ICY doesnt work on the 3gs or not.
Yes this still works. It doesnt verify what you are doing just that you took an Iphone and restored it. If you take someones Iphone put you sim in it and restore it to you computer there is no way for apple to find you Iphone. They only verify it to keep people from stealing them. No worries. Besides apple has no disclamer about jailbreaking Iphone/Ipods. In fact you can even send a jailbroken Iphone back to apple and they will still fix it.
The instructions arent clear but you should snyc you Iphone first then restore to what you just synced. This will take forever especialy if like me you have a 32 full of music. Uhh. but was well worth it. The only way to get all the data not on you sync list, ie. music,pic,apps, is to manualy do it again.
