4x4 Jam is an Excellent Off-Road Racing Game for the iPhone

If you like off-road racing games then you will like iPhone game, 4x4 Jam that is available on the iPhone App Store.

4x4 Jam is developed by Invictus who have developed popular off-road racing games like 1nsane. I have been playing their iPhone game for the last few days, and I'm addicted.

The best thing about this iPhone game is that it offers play fields which are not closed routes like the ones you find in other racing games. You have the freedom to race without any boundaries.

The game offers two terrains: green fields and a desert. You can play on these terrains in any of the three game modes: a classic race mode, free roam, and jam mode.

You get to choose from either a 4x4 truck or a Beetle in each game mode. You can also choose to race with one to three opponents.

In the the first game mode, Off Road Race, you have to beat your opponents to the finish in anywhere from one to ten laps.

In the Jam mode, the objective is to beat your opponents to the checkpoint gates which are depicted by green flares placed randomly on the terrain. You get points if you are the first to cross the gate.

In the free roam mode, you can drive through endless desert or grassland. You can use this mode to get comfortable with the controls and get ready for the other two competitive game modes.

You have options to change the display, sound and control settings. The game offers you three different control methods so that you can select the one which works best for you:

• Accelerometer Steering, Manual Accelerate, Manual Brake
• Accelerometer Steering, Auto Accelerate, Manual Brake
• Touch Steering, Manual Accelerate, Manual Brake

I found the accelerometer based steering a little difficult to control but was very comfortable with the Touch steering, auto accelerate and manual brake option.

You can also choose from three levels of difficulty: easy, medium and difficult.

The nice graphics, vehicle physics and game controls make the gaming experience very enjoyable.

However, I think the game should offer more than just two tracks and two vehicles. The game also needs a multi-player feature to improve the stickiness of the game as beating the computer will get boring after sometime.

Invictus is currently offering 4x4 Jam for half the price ($1.99 instead of $3.99) on the App Store as they plan to release an updated version shortly with hopefully more game modes, tracks and the multi-player feature. You can download it using this direct iTunes link.
