The iPhone Dev Team have confirmed that you can use RedSn0w 0.8 to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.0.1 which was released by Apple to fix the SMS vulnerability. However, there is a trick to get RedSn0w to work with iPhone OS 3.0.1 just like we had told you yesterday.
They have also confirmed that since there is no change in the baseband, you can reinstall UltraSn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0.1.
This is what the Dev Team have to say about jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone OS 3.0.1:
"You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock."
They have also explained why RedSn0w 0.8 works with iPhone OS 3.0.1:
"The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.
And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.
We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid."

Updating your iPhone to the 3.0.1 IPSW fixes the SMS issue. I believe the bypass is only there to trick Redsnow into jailbreaking your iPhone since no changes had to be made to Redsnow.

Tried this on an iPhone 2G and it didn't work. I had to restore the 3.0 firmware.
i updated and rejailbroke with redsnow and alot works good but when i try to ssh my own custom theme back in it says the themes folder doesnt exhist even tho its there and winterboard and openssh is installed

I am suprrised it didn't work for u, It did work on my 2g and 3gs. U just have to make sure u point out 3.0 firmware for iphone 2g in redsnow when it ask for firmware. It should work like charm. If u want to unlock and activate @ same time then u need bl39 and bl46 file too.

Purplera1n doesn't work with iPhone OS 3.0.1, GeoHot has recommended users to use RedSn0w as he hasn't figured out the reason why purplera1n doesn't work with iPhone OS 3.0.1.
Qik is also not working on 3.0.1, it is the only Cydia app that crashes on this firmware. Everything else is working fine without problems. I hope they will make it compatible soon, can anybody confirm if Qik is working?

Thats great, but if you bought your iphone with 3.0 software, and just recently updated to 3.0.1, how can you jailbreak at all? You wont have the 3.0 IPSW. Thats where I am stuck.

you get the firmware in like step 2 (3g) or step 3 (3gs) on the windows install instructions page… just download it direct from apple
upgraded to 3.0.1. restored from back up. used redsn0w 0.8. now only apple stock apps open. cydia does open but takes a while though have no packages. and any app installed from itunes do not open. just open then closes quickly, anyone come across this? going back to 3.0 is there is no fixes
not sure. try doing a full itunes restore from recovery mode of your iphone. then it should allow you to do a full restore of your data. This should leave you on 3.0.1, then just run redsn0w and point it at the 3.0 firmware to re-break it.

I was just wondering, I did the 3.0.1 update, which of course sent my phone back to the normal settings, soooo boring, so I tried to reload cydia with redsnow and it worked, but it wouldn't connect to my carrier network anymore, so I had to do a restore and set it back to the original settings, only to find out that I needed version 0.8, which I cannot find as an actual zip file, with the needed software to complete the proper install, everything i find is a torrent file and that doesn't allow me to install. Does anyone know where I can get the actual zip file or can someone post a link, I have been trying to find it for almost 2 hours now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sync my phone with itunes. it looks like installed but I can not see it.

If you are talking about apps downloaded from Cydia then you will need to install them again.
After you have jailbroken your iPhone, you need to also use UltraSn0w to unlock it.

No it doesn't, it is expected that MMS will be enabled for AT&T iPhone customers in iPhone OS 3.1 which is expected sometime in August.
Thanks for your reply but I am not talking about apps downloaded from cydia. I am talking about downloaded from itunes. But all apps, games and the other stuffs was within the "categories" they had been installed from cydia…
for example; 10 games was in "games" folder, 20 apps was in "Apps" folder. The files I hade created with the app "categories"…

You should remember to remove apps from the folders before you upgrade. However, GoogleMyName, one of readers had an easy fix for the issue you have reported.
Settings>
General> Restrictions and enable this. This will unhide all your
apps. You can then go back and turn restrictions off. After you turn it
back off, all of your hidden apps that were in categories will be back
on your spring board.

Anybody knows how long it takes for the Jailbreaking process to complete? I went through the steps and it recognized my device and started the Jailbreaking process. But it has been stuck on the redsn0w screen that says "Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot". I have not yet seen the screen changed to say "Uploading ramdisk" and afraid to interfere with the processin any way. It's been almost an hour now with no screen change. Thanks.

I have successfully jailbroke my phone and i see the Cydia app on the home screen however whenever i attempt to pull of the app it wont load please help i am anxious to use the Winterboard themes for my iphone =)
the process should not be more than 5 mins try starting over and make sure you use the downloads from this site and make sure you upload the links for the programs on FireFox as they mentioned in the tips.
I was having the same issue with redsn0w freezing on the reboot display . Then i tried using "iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" instead of the "iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" and it worked great! Apparently i was using the ipsw for the 3G instead of the 3GS.
Did my first jailbreak today following this, all went well started downloading apps themes etc. Downloaded a source (cant remember which one) and now Cydia opens for a few secs, doesnt load and then goes off, everything else works fine…? Re-jailbroke but Cydia still wont work and it kept everything i had installed before second jailbreak. Help anyone?

Ok people – I messed around with this for days, tried to unlock one 3GS and two 3G phones and I kept on getting the 'No Service' message – essentially not taking any cards other than AT&T. I've read about people telling others to get newer sim cards, etc. Bad hypothesis.
I repeated the unlock process over and over again – and no luck.
After trying it countless times, I've figured out what the problem is. The issue occurs in the last suggested step of unlocking. I pre-maturely pressed Home and Power to restart. After you try to install purplesn0w or ultrasn0w (what I used), press the screen button that says something like 'reboot' – do NOT do the hard power+home button reset. Let the software completely finish installing the unlock software, and you'll be good to go.
