This past week, Intel unveiled what is touted as the future of connectivity on mobile devices. Called the Light Peak, this is an optical interconnect that can serve to replace all other connectors. Now it has come to light courtesy folks at Engadget that the concept of Light Peak was actually brought forth by Apple who see it as the future on all their upcoming devices including future versions of iPhones, iPods and Mac.
Light Peak can change the way we handle data between devices. This can manage data transfer of the order of 10Gbps. Also, because it can replace all other connectors on the devices, it should help in the development of much smaller devices in the future. Apple had supposedly reached out to Intel with the concept as early as 2007 and a roadmap prepared back then includes introduction of Light Peak to the iPhone and iPod platform where it could serve as a gateway for multimedia and networking outputs.
Apparently, there is much more to come. Engadget reports that a low power Atom chip is likely to be launched by 2010. This could be competing with the current CPU which is used to drive all mobile devices today like the iPhone, netbooks and set top boxes.
What could all of this mean for the iPhone? Apple's strategy has been clear - to push towards a future where we discard all these different kinds of connectivity options and instead move to towards a one-fits-all model. It was only recently that a 'super speed' USB 3.0 was released. It will be interesting to see if Apple has any role at all for USB 3.0 in the scheme of things for the future.
What do you think?
