According to TUAW, iPhone users are facing many issues after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
iPhone users are reporting the following issues after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1, which was released a week back:
-
iPhone randomly shuts down
-
Poor battery life
-
Bricked iPhone
-
Slow performance
iPhone randomly shuts down
As per this Apple Discussions thread, iPhone users are observing a strange issue after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1. They are reporting that their iPhone randomly shuts down.
Header22 first reported the issue after upgrading his iPhone 3G with iPhone OS 3.1:
Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?
It seems to be occurring several times in a day and the only option the user has is to hard reset the iPhone. Users have tried to restore their iPhone but that hasn’t helped.
It seems to be affecting many iPhone users as there are already more than 640 posts and 44 pages on this discussion thread.
Some users are reporting that they have got a replacement from Apple because of the issue.
Poor Battery Life:
According to this Apple Discussions thread, iPhone users are complaining that battery life, which is already a precious commodity on the iPhone gets even worse after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1
akarelin started the discussion thread by reporting:
I've made the so long attended upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1 and strangely battery life has got even worse than before. The phone is using 10-12% of the battery every hour of standby; usage counter grows by 35-40 minutes for every hour of standby. This happens with a clean install and just email setup (mobileme with push), with restore or partial restore. Turning push off only makes it slightly better.
There have been more than 250 posts and 18 pages on this discussion thread. Battery life depends on the usage of an iPhone user so it is not conclusive if this is indeed an issue as we have heard some reports that battery life has improved after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
Bricked iPhone:
This is another strange issue being reported by users after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
ChopperPilot was the first to report this issue on this Apple Discussions thread:
I have the current Mac OS X 10.6 and iTunes 9.0, went to update my iPhone 3G to 3.1 and now my phone is useless. Tried all the tips on tech support with no luck. iPhone stays in recovery mode. I get error codes 2006, 1611, and 26 during different attempts to recover and restore.
douglasfitz might have found a possible solution to the problem:
I had downloaded the 3.1 update during the first rush after the announcement, and I believe my file ended up corrupted. Every time I restored, therefore, iTunes would attempt to reinstall the corrupted updater file.
The trick is to remove the update file from ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates (in this case, iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw). After that, I restarted iTunes, reconnected my phone, and had it download and install a fresh update.
If that doesn’t work, you can checkout this knowledge base article to see if it helps.
Slow performance:
One of the things, users observe after upgrading to a new version of iPhone OS is usually snappier performance. But as per this Apple discussion thread, iPhone users are observing poor performance after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
Elliot confirms that he is observing the same issue first reported by SamVG on this Apple Discussions thread:
I too am experiencing extremely slow response on my 3GS. Swiping the unlock often has no feedback until the phone is unlocked. Pressing the home button when the phone is sleeping appears not to wake the phone for 5 seconds or so.
Are you facing any of these problems? Please let us know in the comments if you have figured out a way to resolve them.
Let’s hope Apple releases a patch to fix these problem.

Glad I did not upgrade and still working Fine!!
Updated a week ago and have NO problems!
My 3G became sloooooooow, it hangs all the time, it's terrible !
I "upgraded" my developer's 3.1 to the officail and accidently let it do a restore. (I always do a fresh install) Noticed that my battery discharged to empty while driving, with it connected to the car charger. As it's over a year old I figured that my battery was dying. Bought a replacement battery but decided to reflash while waiting. Instantly battery issue went away. Actually the battery's lasting much longer than before, without any charging during the day. Go figure….
This problem seem to be common. My 3gs iphone did that once and because I'd known of this issues, i did not upgrade my firmware.
Im trying to turn on the OS 3.1, THE SYSTEM IS DEAD…. HELP!!!!!!
good thing i decided to read up on 3.1 before updating. but as for the slower response issue, i have had similar problems for a while since i bought my 3gs. never really thought much about it, but it does tend to get annoying. any solutions?
…same shutdown issue is happening with me. Having to do hard reboots approximately every other day…and locks up. Fix this Apple.
Something is up with Apple. I got my iPhone in Japan and have been living with 3.0 with no problems. But now when I read this and the other comments I remember I singed some paper when I first signed up last month that said something in English saying that the phone company (Softbank) was not responsible for firmware upgrades and any update you did will not be covered under warranty at your own risk. It's almost like they knew in the future or in the past from firmware upgrades that this was going to be a nightmare. So they warned users flat out front. Either Apple knows that the firmware is crap and put new versions out in time for the PR bukake just too keep investors happy or they have no clue what is wrong with each run of iphones from China (but "designed in California" please blow me) hence why no one can pin point why these problems are so random over many iphones.
I'm not going to upgrade. As there's some old sayings. If it ain't broke why fix it? Yes why upgrade if the phone works. I don't need mms or video editing fix. I need a phone that will work before I had to terminate my contract as google will have a good phone in 2 years I hope?!
I get the same on my 3G. maybe every other day, black screen couple of minutes later apple comes back. I'm also getting far more dropped calls and odd no signals.
Have Apple lost it or what; this company feels more like Microsoft every day!!!
i have the same problem my iphone go in coma
I had massive problems and had read a thread about it only hitting phones with less than a gig free so I free'd up some space and haven't had a crash since, however my battery life is weak now and it is still slow.
Regardless, it pisses me off that my iphone (3g 8gb model) is now essentially a 7gb model because if I fill it up then it will die.
I am having the battery life issue..and I had one auto shutdown since I upgraded a week ago…mm looks like Apple rushed the 3.1 to release it in the last iPod key note…so they gave a half-baked product… too bad..too bad…hope they fix this soon…next time Apple stick to what you have completed..and ready to present..OS 3.1 is giving some much issues that should still be on the developers hands..
Does anyone having those problems with a 2G (1 st gen) iPhone? I was ready to do the upgrade to 3.1, but now I'm not so sure…
My iPhone 3GS battery life has gone down by a lot! 3% drained in 20 minutes while in standby mode! The biggest issue I have is that unlock slidebar won't respond and other apps wont respond when I tap onto them. Fix is APPLE!!!
The screen black out happened on my 1st gen iPod touch. the strange thing is that it is on 3.0
Yes, it happened to my 3GS last night, after 5 hours of attempted firmware upgrades, no success, tried iTunes from both Vista and Snow Leopard. I think the issue could be it wasn't communicating with the Apple server? AT&T store reloaded the 3.1 firmware and got it back to a clean slate in 30 minutes today.
Phone is/was clean, no jailbreaking, kept getting error codes, 4, 16, and others and phone was stuck in a state of needing the firmware upgrade to complete
I can't believe that Apple is now getting like Microsoft, constant problems.
My iPhone was working fine on 3.1 until I installed a new update of it the other day,
now it shuts off every 40mins or so & 02 here in UK are no help.
Apple said wipe & new factory reset. I did that before I even called them & it's not helped.
No one seems to know what to do so I'm bloody stuck with my THIRD iPhone in less than six MONTHS. I am SO pissed at Apple as this is my business phone.
Apple, you charge us enough for everything so SORT THIS OUT or I'm off back to Microsoft & PC's.
NOT impressed

After ugrading to 3.1 on my 3G, I lost my GPS, "Maps" app won't populate a map, just has link to "legal Notices." THE ONE APP I USE EVERY DAY! Uggh. Apple, Help!
Dave, I have exactly the same "problems" with my phone but I have a 3GS Iphone Jailbreak with Pwnagetool. I tried every single step to downgrade or re-jailbreak without success. Every time I got the same "Not Available" issue. Also I lost the "Internet Tethering" under setting>Network and the "cellular data Network.
that problem is because you are under the list tab and it there has a link to the legal notices and no map. try to hit the bottom right corner button and switching to hybrid map mode than see it that works.
Yeah mine has been slow as fuck since 3.1. Swipe to unlock is slow, home button response is slow, answering and ending calls is slow, apps launching slow. Sometimes I want to throw this POS at a brick wall!
I have a 3g and while I'm not experiencing any of these symptoms, I am having problems with mail. 2 or 3 seconds into lauching mail, it shuts down. I hardly have time to see what new email I have. I tried deleting my email accoutns and then re-establishing them but…that doesn't work. This has only started since 3.1.
3.1.3
Random shut downs…….
anyone know if an update bug fix?
I am having the same problems and have not found a solution anywhere. uggg
sure has, mine is a 3GS same problems as reported
yep mine just went black on me.. but managed to save my darling by holding the start button and the hold button (top right) for about ten freaking seconds.. then connect to itunes.. then itunes asks if me wants to restore.. but with the price of having all my data my naked chics' pic deleted.. so i said 'no way hose'.
then i reconnect it.. and now its ok..
doing my encryption as i am typing this..
yep.. DO NOT UPGRADE TO 3.1 watever…
