Step By Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1 using PwnageTool 3.1

The iPhone Dev Team had warned iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users who had jailbroken and/or unlocked their iPhone to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 a day before it was released and had asked them to wait for them to release the PwnageTool.

iPhone Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.1 for iPhone OS 3.1 few days back to allow users to jailbreak their iPhone and also preserve the baseband firmware so that they can unlock their iPhone.

This step-by-step guide will show you how to use Dev Team's PwnageTool 3.1 courtesy folks at iClarified.

Some important points to note before we start:

  • Hacking your iPhone could void its warranty. So please proceed with caution.

  • This guide is applicable only for iPhone 3G users. iPhone 3GS users can refer to this guide. We’ll publish a guide for iPhone 2G users shortly.

  • PwnageTool 3.1 is ideal for all those who have iPhone firmware 3.0.1 or lower running on their iPhone 3G as it preserves the baseband but can also be used if you have already upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.

  • PwnageTool does not unlock iPhone 3G. It allows you to only jailbreak your iPhone 3G by allowing you to create a pre-jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1. But as it also preserves your iPhone’s baseband from getting updated so that you can use UltraSn0w to unlock it. (After unlocking your iPhone running jailbroken iPhone 3.1 if you notice that the name and/or logo of the carrier is missing then it appears to be a cosmetic issue, it shouldn’t impact coverage or signal. iPhone Dev Team hope to fix this issue when they release the PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3GS).

  • Upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 breaks tethering and MMS hack, though AT&T customers  can refer to this guide to enable MMS.

  • This guide cannot be used to downgrade your baseband from   05.11.07 to 04.26.08 (currently there no method away to downgrade the baseband from 05.11.07 included in iPhone OS 3.1).

  • If you already have a jailbroken iPhone and have installed jailbreak apps then this method will also result in wiping out the jailbreak apps. You'll need to reinstall them via Cydia.

  • The only way to update to iPhone firmware 3.1 and preserve baseband is by using the PwnageTool 3.1. PwnageTool is only available for Mac users, so Windows users who want to unlock their iPhone 3G should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac and follow this guide.

Preparatory steps before Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G and preserving its baseband:

1. Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.

2. Please download PwnageTool from any of these download links:

3. You need to download the iPhone firmware 3.1 file for iPhone 3G from this link (iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw).

Create Custom Firmware 3.1 using PwnageTool 3.1:

1. Launch PwnageTool 3.1. You will see the following warning message, click OK. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

2. Please select the Expert Mode from the menu bar in the next screen.

3. Then select iPhone 3G from the options presented and then click on the blue arrow button to continue. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

4. You will see the "Browse for IPSW" screen. PwnageTool will automatically find the iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw file that you had downloaded on your Mac. If PwnageTool doesn't automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse and select the file. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

5. Click iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144 to select the IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

6. In the next screen, select General and then click on the blue arrow button to continue. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

7. The General settings allows you to decide the partition size (you have to increase the size of the root partition, 695 MB worked fine for us). Keep "Activate the phone" option checked if you want to unlock your iPhone or deselect it if you are using an official iPhone carrier. Click the blue arrow button to continue. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

8. In the next screen, you will see the Bootneuter settings greyed out for the 3G iPhone. Click the blue arrow button to continue. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

9. In the next Cydia settings screen; you can pre-install the packages in the custom firmware so you don't have to manually install them later. Select the packages and click the blue arrow button to continueJailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageToolJailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

10. The Custom Logos Settings screen allows you to change the boot and restore logos. Once you have selected the boot and restore logos, click the blue arrow button to continue. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

11. In the next screen, select Build and then click on the blue arrow button to continue. You will be prompted to save the custom firmware file, save it as iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw so that you differentiate the custom firmware file created by PwnageTool with the firmware file you had downloaded earlier.Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageToolJailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageToolJailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

12. While building the custom firmware, you will be prompted to enter a password. Enter your administrator password and then click OK.

13. You will then be prompted with following message: Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

Its safer to select "No".

14. PwnageTool will put your iPhone into DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade mode). It will prompt you to turn off your iPhone 3G (ensure that it is connected to your Mac). Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

15. Then you will be prompted to hold both the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

16. Finally, you will prompted to release the Power button while you continue holding down the Home button for another 10 seconds. Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

17. If it is successful in putting your iPhone 3G in DFU mode, PwnageTool will display the following message: Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

18. iTunes will also pop-up with the following message: Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

Select "Ok".

Restore your iPhone 3G in DFU mode with Custom iPhone Firmware created using PwnageTool 3.1:

You can now use the custom iPhone firmware created using the PwnageTool 3.1 to restore your iPhone 3G in DFU on either Mac or Windows by following these steps.

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.

2. In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the "Restore"  button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is a VERY IMPORTANT STEP as just pressing the "Restore" button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 3.1 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the custom iPhone firmware file.) Jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool

3. You should be able to see all the older iPhone firmware files you had downloaded so far, select the custom iPhone firmware (iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw file) that was created earlier using PwnageTool to restore your iPhone 3G (it’s important that you use the custom firmware file iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw).

4. Once your iPhone 3G is restored, it will be jailbroken and updated with iPhone firmware 3.1 but the baseband will still be 04.26.08 (and not 05.11.07) so you can unlock your iPhone 3G using UltraSn0w. You can check it by going to Settings -> General -> About and looking for Version, it should be 3.1 (7C144) and Modem firmware should be 04.26.08.

5. The last step is to set up your iPhone 3G from a backup.

When they released PT a couple days ago, I tried it and it worked, the only thing that changed it was the the Iphone recognize the line, but not the network on : settings/general/about, weird, but it works so WTH, i dont c the network name, but still can make calls and receive plus internet trough the network, so as for me, GJ Dev-Team

  • According to the Dev Team it appears to be a cosmetic issue, it shouldn’t
impact coverage or signal just like you've observed. iPhone Dev Team hope to
fix this issue when they release PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.

We've have updated the post so readers are aware of it.

    Thanks CristV77.

  • coach

    Is this for PC users????

  • CristV77

thats cool, thanks, and i really dont mind the "cosmetic" issue, as i can make and receive phone calls, thats all that matter to me, so im cool, BTW mine its a 3G, so users have a good testimony from another 3G user

    Good Luck

  • CristV77

as far as I know just for mac, but the PC's PT comes soon after mac's

    hang in there mate

  • PwnageTool has been available only for Mac users.
Dev Team has earlier released RedSn0w for both Mac and Windows but that
didn't preserve the baseband so not sure if they'll release it until they
figure out a way to unlock the baseband update that was shipped with iPhone
    OS 3.1.

  • Coolwave

can someone send me or know where i can get a custom firmware created by the PwnageTool 3.1. I only have PC and my son updated my jailbroken iphone 3G by mistake.

  • buddy this doesnt work for pc. people cant read? just wait until the dev team releases redsn0w

  • coach

    Thanks

    Thanks

  • Coolwave

It says it in the step by step "Windows users who want to unlock their iPhone 3G should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac and follow this guide."

    What happen to purplera1n ?

  • Dave

I have upgraded and jail broken and unlocked 2 different iPhone 3G now. both phones are now working quite well, but some advice to people experience problems:

    – DON'T restore your iPhone from a backup. Just my opinion, but once you jailbreak and then restore from a backup you may encounter issues like a dropped battery and random crashes. Best bet is just to start it as a new iPhone and then sync it all over again.

    – Once you have jail broken and sync'd for the first time, give your phone a hard reboot (switch it off completely and switch it back on). This fixed a lot of the problems other people have been experiencing

    – Winterboard will just put the phone into a safe mode loop – don't bother with this. It will be updated to work with 3.1 eventually.

  • ok? what does this change? u still need a mac to use it.

  • coke

I just upgrade with PT and i not getting service what can i do

  • Same happened to me i just installed fake carrier from Cydia and changed it.

    new website were coming up
    http://www.theiphonetheory.com

  • Dave

    Coke …

Is your iPhone locked to a certain carrier like AT&T? IF so, you need to go into Cydia, and install ultrasn0w. This unlocks your network.

you have to add he following repo into cydia

    http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com

    Hope this helps.

    Dave

  • Purplera1n stopped working with iPhone OS 3.0.1 and George Hotz, the developer had commented that he doesn't plan to fix it so don't expect him to release something for iPhone OS 3.1.

  • As Dave mentioned, PwnageTool does not unlock iPhone 3G. It allows you to only jailbreak your iPhone 3G by allowing you to create a pre-jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1. But as it also preserves your iPhone’s baseband from getting updated so that you can use UltraSn0w to unlock it.

You can checkout this guide to unlock iPhone 3G using UltraSn0w:

  • TylerM

I'm an AT&T customer — I did the jailbreak, but now I have no signal. I was sure to leave "activate the phone" deselected. Any ideas?

  • Coolwave

I got a custom firmware from someone and i'm using a pc computer with a iphone 3g 3.1 I tried to restore it in itunes withe the custom firmware but it gets to the point where its trying to set the iphone up for restore and for somereason an error comes up. Windows shows that it must be in a USB 2.0 but it is and have no clue what's going on.

  • You don't need to activate it using PwnageTool if you are using AT&T's iPhone plans.

Try restarting your iPhone to see if it helps.

  • What is the error message?

Try it again and see if it works.

  • marion

when i jailbreak my iphone from 3.0 to 3.1, will i lose all my jailbroken apps and start all over from the beginning as in installing all jailbroken apps? thank you.

  • Yeah, using this method will wipe out your jailbreak apps, you'll need to
    reinstall them again via Cydia.

  • pankaj

    Dear Dev team,
I accindently upgraded my i phone 3GS to OS 3.1 and now the phone is compleyely locked. Any chance of unlocking the phone soon or the money that i spent (approx $750) on it is down the drain.
Some people i have spoken to say that the phone is a complete 'dud'now and nothing ever can be done.
    Pls help.

  • Unfortunately, as of now Dev Team haven't figured out a way to unlock the
baseband shipped with iPhone OS 3.1 nor is there any way to downgrade the
baseband so you could unlock it. We'll keep you posted if there is any news
    on that front.

  • Rahat Islam

Hey how do you do this if your computer is a windowsm the first thing you have to download only works for mac.

  • Windows users who want to jailbreak their iPhone 3G should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac and follow this guide.

  • Coolwave

The error msg is " the iphone could not be restore an unknown error occurred. (1611)

  • Rahat Islam

If I do the jailbreak on a mac, won't my iphone be synced to only that mac… and is there a way to change the sync from one computer to another without system restore?

  • There is either a problem with the custom firmware you're using or the other
option would to try restoring it using the custom firmware file using
    another computer.

  • You can use the Mac to use the PwnageTool to create the custom firmware file
and then restore your iPhone using the custom firmware file on your
    computer.

  • iphoneuser

Thanks for every thing Dev team. I have a question is it possible to downgrade back to 3.0.1 if one has used pwnage tool custom made ipsw to upgrade to 3.1.
iPhoneHacks expert opinion would matter a lot.

  • I'm assuming you have an iPhone 3G, in which case you can downgrade to
iPhone 3.0.1 by restoring with a iPhone OS 3.0.1 firmware file. However,
please note if you haven't used PwnageTool to preserve the baseband then
downgrading to iPhone OS 3.0.1 won't downgrade the baseband.

  • Coolwave

I finial got my iphone 3g to downgrade to 3.0 i restore it like normal using 3.0 firmware it came up with the error code 1500 something like. Then i use QuickPwn22-1 and open itunes and it activated with 3.0 firmware. Baseband hasn't downgrade but if you don't need to unlock your iphone this works. After you set your iphone up then use redsnow 0.8 to jailbrake it.

  • DistortedLoop

Ae you sure about being able to just downgrade to 3.01? I thought Apple was now refusing to "sign" any firmware that wasn't 3.1. That's what all the hoopla over getting your two files from either Purplera1n or the Cydia app was all about. You needed the keys to fake a signature from Apple.

  • DistortedLoop

Or maybe that was just for 3GS phones…

  • Apple introduced the signing thing in iPhone 3GS, it should not be an issue
if you have an iPhone 3G (the reason I mentioned "I'm assuming you have an
    iPhone 3G").

  • iphoneuser

Thanks iPhoneHacks, yes I do have a iPhone 3G and used pwnage tool to upgrade it, so the base band is preserved. It is just that the only reason I upgraded was of battery issues i.e. not charging after I installed "BatteryMagic" app. The only way to charge was to turn it off and charge directly from the adapter not from USB port. I have read many people complaining bout battery issues with 3.1 so far it is far better then I had with 3.0.1, so lets see.
    Thanks again

  • Rahat Islam

This is in reply to my previous answer located above, but what is the custom firmware file on my computer/how do I identify it?

  • if i accidentally upgraded to 3.1 and downgraded back to 3.0 will this work with 3.1? my baseband is still set for 3.1

  • Joelgoku

I did the same think but got on "no srvice" and got to go back at 3.1 to use the phone. Any ideas? 🙁

  • Joelgoku

I did what omid said and got the " no service" error. What should i do?

  • BHAVU

I have Jailbreak my iPhone 3G 16GB iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw and restore it successfully, but updated with iPhone firmware 3.1 but the baseband 05.11.07
Cab you please tell me how to downgrad to baseband 04.26.08.

It will be very helpful because, now I can not see any network carrier to the my mobile and when I checked Setting< Carrier < it says Can not load Carrier….

Please help with this problem…. waiting for your reply….

  • Joelgoku

The same here. Still waiting for any help about this. Thanks in advance

  • Krusty

    Firstly Thanks.

The process has worked fine to a point.

    I have a UNLOCKED 16gig 3G

Running MAC etc. – Issue is.

    NO SERVICE.
    – Have turned off & on again
    – Removed & re-inserted SIM
    – Restarted MAC & iTunes
    – Flight Mode off & On

    ideas?

  • Krusty

OK – I repeated the process

    i.e. Created a new Package

    – this time I unchecked Step 7 "Activate the Phone" and she is now sweet.

  • joelgoku

I try with redsn0w 0.8 and still the same problem. Its said "No Service" and i use AT&T as carrier. What can I do to bring back my jailbreak iphone to live?

  • Marvin

maybe you can try fuzzyband for downgrade your baseband in cydia you can find fuzzyband it lets you downgrade your baseband

  • chris.t

Hi, please can someone seriously help me. I am from the UK I have an iphone 3G and unfortunately i downloaded 3.1 onto it last week. I desperately want to jailbreak the phone so i can get these free apps.
i am using a mac and im following all of the instructions above and it all seems to be working fine until i restore the phone using the custom iPhone firmware iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw file)

i try to restore it using this and it starts extracting the software and the tries to restore the phone and then says

Error can not restore iphone error message 1604

Please tell me what i am doing wrong????

Will the iPhone 3gs eventually be jailbroken on 3.1? I'm going to buy an iPhone in a few days, and want to know whether I should get a 3gs or just a 3g if it is easier to jailbreak. Thanks! <3

  • ChrisS

The 3g is very slow compared to the 3Gs

  • chris.t

Am i the only person who is having problems using this. everything works fine until i get to the restore, it comes up with a box thats says

The iphone "iphone" cannot be restored an unknown error occurred (1604)

Please can someone advise me what to do.

  • Sarah

Very true…that, and the superior camera, is what is causing me to lean towards the 3Gs. However, if the 3Gs isn't able to be jailbroken, I'd settle for the 3G. Hence my original question 😛

  • Jerry

So I have this straight. I have OS3.1 running on a iPhone 3G on the AT&T network. Modem Firmware is 05.11.07. Based on what I read above, I can jailbreak the phone but I cannot unlock it because of the baseband. Is this accurate? Will it matter that I cannot unlock since AT&T is my carrier?

  • is there any updates on the windows version release?

Do i need redsn0w .8 to jailbreak or do i need to make a custom IPSW to jailbreak my phone? any information would be greatly appreciated.

So let me get this straight, I can jailbreak and update my iphone 3g to 3.1 on a mac even though I have a pc?? Would it affect the iphone 3g itself or it will be working fine?…

Please explain a little better because after reading all the problems and bugs on some people after upgrading to 3.1 I'm a little hesitant… please help…

  • kingmickjan@gmail.com

Here is a new one for you guys:
I have used this guide to jailbreak my iphone 3G ( i was using the SIM hardware hack before) and after using the custom ipsw which pwnage tool created, i ended up with version 3.1(7C144) and baseband 02.30.03. Cydia was not in the apps but i got it when i restored my iphone backup (which i took before using this guide). I installed ultrasnow to unlock it but now the phone is bugging out and i dont get a signal with T-Mobile USA. Any ideas? Like for example how to upgrade baseband from 02.30.03 to 04.28.06?

    Peace!
    Mick

  • Raed

I have windows. I accidentally upgraded my to 3.1. I use AT&T as my carrier. I already enabled MMS on it.

Can I jailbreak it still? I mean if I downgrade to 3.0.1? Can I still downgrade it? what about MMS then?
    Thanks

  • yousuf

i have same problem no signals

  • Yash

Can you tell us how did you unlock 3.1 running baseband 05.11.07?

    I am stuck big time…

  • Desi Sensation

Since I own a PC, I will have to borrow someone's mac to do the process. But how do I do the custom restore after this process? and will I lose all my application, music and contacts from my phone after the restore on my pc? or will it just be the same just with the additional jailbroken app called cydia?

  • Rahat the Robot

How do you bring up the music box when you're using the maps application because I did it once, just couldnt do it after that…But I mean like it brings up a small box like windows media player so you can switch between songs without having to exit the application. And is there an app that lets you run several apps at the same time like a blackberry?

  • Vlade

I got it in april on a contract here in Oz, so it was unlocked operating on 3.0 I had it jailbroken as well, but when I needed to restore it went to 3.1 automatically and now I want to jailbreak it but pwnage for windows is not ready yet.

  • i have jailbroken my iphone 3G all went fine but my modem firmware is 05.11.07 and not 04.26.08 so therefore ultrasn0w wont unlock my iphone and i am constantly getting no signal and cant make or recieve calls

  • josh

I just need to know if i update my baseband in itunes i dont need to unlock the iphone ever. after i update to 3.1 can i still use the tool just to jail break it.

  • Adam

Quick question. I did everything step by step including the sn0w, it all went almost good however when I tried to unlock my phone to work on a different network using Cydia and the instructions repo into cydia

    http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com

it seemed like it was beginning to download it and then it would just stay on the black screen for ever and eventually I just had to hard reset the iPhone. After that it would appear on the list, but when I insert a SIM from a different network it doesn't connect, No Signal. Any thoughts?

  • Adam

I am having the exact same problem. Anyone came across this as well or found a way to go around it?

  • Jerry

It looks like the line went dead……

  • um, no you don't, you can just restore with the custom firmware from your windows itunes.

  • marina

i tried using this method but PwnageTool cannot read the restore file. any suggestions?

  • dave

Hi, i just ran through the procedure and everything seemed to work fine (after using ultrasn0w to get AT&T back). my settings and pictures and all that stuff came through intact, but all my text messages are gone. anyone have any thoughts on getting them back or are they just gone? Thanks!

  • Paul

All, for those of you new to jailbreaking, or wish to jail break your iPhone 3G running 3.1 with firmware 05.11.07, you can use this process to Jailbreak without worry. I have used this step by step guide to do just that. It ran flawlessly and you should have no anxiety about doing it. At first I was worried because the instructions say you need 3.01 or earlier but you need not worry if you have already upgraded to 3.1.

    Regards.

  • Thanks Paul, we've updated the guide to avoid the confusion.

  • Safiyyah

I have the exact same problem. Is there a way to upgrade baseband? Or do we have to use something other than Ultrasnow to unlock it?

  • BMS

i thought i was good with this stuff…i was able to make the custom firmware using quickpwn on my intel mac mini – even threw a custom boot screen in there.

ipsw created successfully. copied the file via wireless network to my PC running windows 7 with itunes version 9.0.0.70

threw the iphone 3g running firmware 3.1 baseband 5.11.07 into DFU mode – itunes said this device is in recovery mode and needs to be restored – i clicked ok and then shift clicked the restore button…

located the custom firmware created on my mac

and i get this stupid error code 1600 – wtf and FML

    drop me any suggestions?

How do you adjust your iphone, so when you attach it to an xbox 360, it will show up in the play list menu like my flashdrive does?

  • Hi! I am not too good in English, even if i understand good what you writes and stuff, i dont get the "big picture".
I have a quite new iphone 3g OS 3.1 it has never been unlocket or jailbroken before. And it has the new baseband.
Will the steps on the top of this page work so i can install cydia, and then installous?
If it is, should i just start on step 1 and contnue till i am finished, or should i do something else?
If it dont work, is the any other alternative, or do i have to wait?

  • Rahat the Robot

"PwnageTool 3.1 is ideal for all those who have iPhone firmware 3.0.1 or lower running on their iPhone 3G as it preserves the baseband but can also be used if you have already upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1."
So does this mean you can use this to jailbreak even if you have already upgraded to OS 3.1 or not? This statement seems to say no then yes.

  • i wondered about the same until i saw this post:

    Paul said…
All, for those of you new to jailbreaking, or wish to jail break your iPhone 3G running 3.1 with firmware 05.11.07, you can use this process to Jailbreak without worry. I have used this step by step guide to do just that. It ran flawlessly and you should have no anxiety about doing it. At first I was worried because the instructions say you need 3.01 or earlier but you need not worry if you have already upgraded to 3.1.

    Regards.

Hi everyone today I finally did the jb procedure using a friend mac following the steps above,at the end of the restore from backup when the phone turned back on I have a issue that I would like your help to resolve; first the modem baseband is still 05.11.07 not 04.26.08 like is suppose to; it does not recognize the network nor my phone number and I`m not able to make calls, I will appreciate any help thanks.

  • Mike

Desi, It will delete everything from your computer. A Mac will help you build the .ipsw and then just follow the steps after 14 (and you don't have to have the program, just do what the steps say). Once in DFU mode, plug into iTunes and Shift-Click the restore button, select the .ipsw file and let it do it's job.

  • Mike

I meant to say it'll delete everything on your iPhone.

  • Couple of points that might help:1. Keep "Activate the phone" option checked
if you want to unlock your iPhone or deselect it if you are using an
    official iPhone carrier.
    2. This guide only jailbreaks your iPhone, if you want to unlock your
iPhone, then you can check out the guide to unlock it using UltraSn0w after
    jailbreaking your iPhone:

  • trebor737

    hey guys,

your help has been great and i managed to get the jailbreak onto my iphone 3g, but the problem is that the phone now has no network coverage? has anyone got any solutions for this?

  • rob

I've tried this multiple times in both expert mode, and simple mode, and it has never once activated.

I just did it for the 6th time in 24 hours and I'm just going to resort to a normal factory restore because it will not activate itself no matter what I do, and I'm tired of having a phone that doesn't function.

  • aNxIoUs IpHoNeUsEr

Any word on PT for 3GS running OS 3.1 yet?
I wanted to jailbreak my iPhone for the first time ever, only to realize it's not available yet 🙁

  • dehart007@hotmail.com

Ok so here is my fix to the Error 1604. First off I have to say its all my own fault. I've done the upgrade previously on my Iphone 3.1 and it worked no problem, So I decided to do my wife's. So I followed the same process and lost my carrier capability. Sitting on activation, and every time I tried to do a restore I'd get the 16xx message. The following is how I got my Iphone working again.

    1) Reboot your Iphone (it will have no carrier signal)
    2) Run Itunes
    3) Press or when selecting the "Restore button".
    4) Select the 3.1 firmware file (NOT Your Custom Firmware, but the Apple 3.1 firmware)
    5) Let Itunes put your phone into recovery mode and restore the firmware (This wipes out the jailbreak)

Note: if asked about a carrier update, select "YES"
    6) When complete "restore" from Itunes backup

The above will get your phone working again it did for me.

So my root problem was that my wife's phone was not running firmware 3.1.

SO DO NOT JAILBREAK with this process unless your running 3.1. My oversight and a huge scare. I'm just happy I was able to get the phone working again.

  • steven m

if i already have my iphone 3g updated to 3.1 before i do this jailbreak will the jailbreak still worrk? and will mms still work after jailbreak? thanks alot

  • steven m

  • Mozbius

Iphonefix.de is a nice website to get the latest custom firmware… Only thing do is that custome firmwares have the pineapple instead of the apple when booting up.

  • Mozbius

If you have zonealarm installed turn it off… That app caused me slot of grief with my iPhone! Whenever you synch turn it off…. In my case I've finally given up and uninstalled it altogether.

  • BigMo

    hello,

i have iphone 3g with modem firmware 2.28.00 and version 2.2 (5G77). its been a while ive updated my iphone firmware. I used PwnageTool way back to jailbreak my iphone. My question is: would i be able to use OS 3.1 jailbroken by PwnageTool 3.1.3 on firmware 2.28.00 or do i have to update the firmware first to something else? If yes, please advise me on how to do it. Thanks

  • As far as I'm aware, it won't be possible to update directly to iPhone OS 3.1 and preserve the baseband as 2.28.00 is not compatible with iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

  • norseman

I also had NO SIGNAL, re-installed ultrasnow and all is OK again.

  • BigMo

    Thank-u for the quick reply…

few more questions, so how do i go from here if i want to jail break it… n how do i jump to baseband 04.26.08… cuz i believe 4.26.08 is compatible with PwnageTool 3.1.3? am i going the rite way…

    thx in advance

  • I guess since you have an iPhone 3G, you might be able to first upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0 or iPhone OS 3.0.1 (which comes bundled with baseband 04.26.08) and then use PwnageTool 3.1.3 to upgrade to jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1 and preserve the baseband.

  • BigMo

k… just to be on safe side i though i should ask u… so, I do a system restore using Itunes (version doesnt matter i guess) first and then update to the latest firmware using Itunes as well??? rite?

    Thank-you

  • If you click on restore in iTunes, it will upgrade you to iPhone OS 3.1 as that is current version available.
You might have to restore using iPhone OS 3.0 firmware file and if you are on a Mac Hold down Option and press the "Restore" button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button.

  • BigMo

    much appreciated…

    will update soon.

  • Theesado

It says that it will delete a Cydia applications
but will updating delete installous application(app store apps that have been cracked)

  • BigMo

great, im done with the update… everything went smooth… im running 3.0 with 4.26.08… now i just need a mac… lol

    thankyou for all your help…

i already upgraded my iphone 3g to version 3.1 (7C144) through itunes. Do i still have to "download the iPhone firmware 3.1 file for iPhone 3G from this specific link (iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw)."???

  • univers911@yahoo.com

i upgraded my 3g to 3.1 and now I try to follow the steps above to jailbreak 3.1 i get stuck at step4 and is unable to detect the firmware. Need help. Thx.

  • KRoy

I just did a JB for my iPhone 3G.
Excellent tool..I created the ipsw on my fren's mac and brought it home and then restored using my pc..
horrraaay it worked perfect 🙂 – thanks a lot

  • KRoy

to add on Luckily I was still using 3.0.1 with baseband as 04.26.08 so now I can unlock if I want

  • rachelami

It appears that the steps for using PT differ depending on whether you need to unlock for use with an unofficial carrier? Great, that means I can't use someone else's custom firmware for fear that it'll brick the phone functionality. Plus I don't have access to a Mac.

Thanks Dev Team and everyone else for the effort, but this is getting ridiculous. I paid full retail for what I thought was going to be a factory-unlocked phone. What the hell good is a 'no contract' phone if it's still locked into the same carrier (who also refuses to activate the thing without a data plan)?

Somebody PRETTY PLEASE come up with a permanent carrier unlock for this thing already! Steve Jobs, I will wash your car and clean your swimming pool, just give me the unlock code for this damn thing!

Sorry for venting, thanks for the tutorial. 8P

  • Miguel

Iphone 3G 3.1 with 05.11.07 (USA for ATT phone, never Jailbreak or mess with before)

I follow all the steps, with a Mac, and the last step when Itunes its suppose to tell you "Itunes Has detected an Iphone in recovery mode, you must restore …" I get the message that Itunes can't connect to a network.

Do I need an internet connection for the last step? The recovery package is created (I've done this twice no problem) and the Phone still working no problem.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Miguel

My Iphone is the same way, anybody knows?

  • Theo

I have an iphone which has been jailbroken and unlocked.
I now need to upgrade the OS to 3.1 and I'm kinda lost.
Hope someone can help me with the following:
Do I only need to run the Pwnagetool to do so?
Or do I need to unlock it again after?

    thnks
