We finally have some good news for iPhone 3GS users who have been patiently waiting for iPhone Dev team to release their PwnageTool that supports iPhone 3GS.
According to MuscleNerd, member of the iPhone Dev Team, they’ve completed testing of PwnageTool for iPhone 3GS users to that they can safely upgrade to pre-jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1 and also preserve the baseband so that they can unlock their iPhone.
iPhone Dev Team had released their PwnageTool 3.1 for iPhone OS 3.1 but it only supported iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G and did not support iPhone 3GS. (You can checkout our step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using PwnageTool 3.1 for iPhone OS 3.1)
However, the good news is that MuscleNerd has just announced that they’ve completed testing of PwnageTool for iPhone 3GS users and are getting ready to release it shortly.
So here are some details about the new version of PwnageTool, which will answer some of the commonly asked questions:
- It will allow users who had jailbroken/pwned their iPhone 3GS earlier (also check point 3) to upgrade to a pre-jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1 and also preserve the baseband so that they can unlock their iPhone 3GS.
- If users have already upgraded their jailbroken/pwned iPhone 3GS (also check point 3) to iPhone OS 3.1 then the baseband of their iPhone would have also got upgraded to 05.11.07, so they will be able to jailbreak their iPhone but won’t be able to unlock it as the iPhone Dev Team hasn’t been able to unlock the baseband that is bundled with iPhone OS 3.1.
- You might also need the iBSS and iBEC files for PwnageTool to work with iPhone 3GS but we don't have a confirmation on this one.
- The new version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the OOTB (out of the box) iPhone 3GS that had iPhone OS 3.1 already installed.
- It will be available for Mac users. But since the only way to update to iPhone firmware 3.1 and preserve baseband is by using the PwnageTool, Windows users who want to unlock their iPhone 3GS should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac.
We’ll let you know as soon as PwnageTool for iPhone 3GS is released.

Ok so my 3gs was jailbroken on 3.0, now it isn't b/c I updated to 3.1. Does this mean I can now jailbreak 3.1and not unlock b/c of the baseband? Or I can't jailbreak and unlock b/c I'm on stock 3.1???

Since Dev Team hasn't been able to unlock the baseband that is bundled with iPhone OS 3.1, they might not release RedSn0w for Windows users to jailbreak iPhone, as it does not preserve the baseband. So looks like Windows users might have to wait longer.
I have the same question. I was J/B on 3.0 and if I move to 3.1 now (upgrade via iTunes) will this Jail Break work for me. I do NOT care about unlocking…just J/B.

I was having 3.0 unlocked on my 3gs Iphone.But my brother did update it to 3.1 now and I am just using like a brick.Will I be able to jailbreak it and use it once the Dev team releases the tool ?
Yes I was jailbroken on 3.0 and already upgraded to 3.1 soon as it came out but i want to know being that my 3gs wasnt out of the box with 3.1 and like I mentioned it was jailbroken prior with 3.0 can I jailbreak 3.1 now?
If you want to unlock your iPhone then the bad news is that it might not be possible to unlock it with the new version of PwnageTool, you might be able to jailbreak it if you have the iBSS and iBEC files.
If I am on OS 3.0 on iPhone 3gs jailbroken using redsnow on the mac, does that I still count as a "users who had jailbroken/pwned their iPhone 3GS earlier"
This sucks! Thanks for the update, but this isn't a full jailbreak. If you have an iPhone 3GS on 3.1 software (official Apple upgrade) then you are stuck! (Especially us Windows users). Thanks Dev-Team..way to play…I'll be looking for other hackers next time.

My iPhone 3GS came with 3.0 and I updated to 3.1 and I hadn't jailbroken my phone while it was on 3.0. What I'm trying to say is, I am on 3.1 (not ootb) and I want to jailbreak. I am a first time jalibreaker.
Unfortunately, if you haven't jailbroken/pwned your iPhone 3GS before then it will not be possible to jailbreak it with the new version of PwnageTool that Dev Team plans to release shortly. You might have a wait a little longer.
So if you jailbroke your phone previously with RedSn0w, can you use this jailbreak method or do we need to wait?

I heard the dev team gonna release the pwnagetool soon its that true. So i can jailbreak my phone again even i accidently upgrade my 3gs to 3.1 . I just bought a brand new 3gs phone but its come with a 3.1 firmware

I have a 3GS that came with OS 3.0. I want to jailbreak it and unlock it for the first time (I just moved out of the US so I really need it to use the phone) but if Apple wants to force me to update it to 3.1 at the same time I restore it. I understand that this new version released yesterday won't help me either since my phone was not jailbroken previously.
Am I missing something here or am I screwed? Any idea of when you'll be able to release a tool that jaibreaks 3GS 3.1 not previously jailbroken? Thanks!

Good luck with your search tho, if you do discover a way from another hacker, please try it first then go honking at them for bricking your device, not the guys who put time and effort into:
a) making JB possible
b) making JB for free
c) reporting of the above developments to the community for free (IPH)
Why not trade your windows pc in and go buy a Mac instead??

I had an iphone that I had Jailbroken and was working fine.
I went through the newly released jailbreak process to upgrade to 3.1 and it seemed to work, but I still didn't have MMS. I tried to add MMS and lost network connection. Couldn't do anything to get it back and after playing with it more, I got stuck at the "pineapple screen". Couldn't do anything..
I tried getting into DFW mode and reloading the ROM that was created before and got an error. So, I was basically sitting with a brick..
I decided to suck it up and just do a standard restore which gave me 3.1 – obviously non-jailbroken… Sucks..
Now I guess I just need to patiently hope and wait for them to come out with a release to jailbreak the 3.1 phones.
Is it on the agenda? What's the best guess as to when it'll be out?
