iPhone hacking expert, Geohot has released a new version of blackra1n, his amazingly simple tool to jailbreak any iPhone running iPhone OS 3.1.2.
Geohot has fixed some of the bugs from the first release in blackra1n RC2.
According to Geohot, blackra1n RC2 fixes the following issues:

Fixed 3G issues

Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB ipt 8GB and new 3GSes

Fixed Icy issues
He has released the updated version of blackra1n for both Windows and Mac users.
If you had problems jailbreaking your iPhone using blackra1n RC1 then you can try using the new version. If you managed to successfully jailbreak your iPhone using the earlier version then you don’t need to rerun it.
Please remember that he had issued the following warning for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users who want to unlock their iPhone:
Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate.
So if you want to unlock your iPhone then you should use iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 3.1.4, which allows you to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2 and also preserve the baseband so you can use UltraSn0w to unlock it.

Does this jailbreak also allow for Internet tethering to be used with 3Gs?
In order to get the tethering working, I had downloaded the Rock Your Phone installer program and their tool called MyWi, enabled tethering and it has remained enabled, even after the trial has expired, I don't care about setting up a wifi hotspot as much as I do just getting tethering to work over usb.

I have a older Iphone 2G now running the old 2.x firmware that was never officially activated thru Itunes but does use ATT carrier.
I do not have a MAC to use Pawnage.
Is there a procedure to use Blackrain on a 2G and update to 3.1.2 and have it not just give me 911 service only?
Winterboard & SBSettings do work. I used RC1 and reinstalled them after jailbreaking, and they're working fine.

I have updated my iPhone 3g to 3.1.2 last week using an ipsw which I downloaded as a torrent, since I don't have a mac and could not use pwnagetool to jailbreak it. since then I've been having a wifi problem. The phone does see my wifi as it shows me the ssid and the signal strength and when I try to connect to it, it does seem to connect. But it either stays connected for just a few seconds or doesn't connect at all and the wifi logo disappears from the top bar. I have tried reseting the network settings but the problem persists. Anyone having same problem and maybe has a solution please? Thanks
Does this allow you to access the root directory of the iPhone? After using the first version I can't use iphonebrowser or anything to access it.

ok it worked fine but every time i restart the iphone it is in the conect to itunes mode i dont get it
Try unplugging the router's power cord for about a minute and then plug it back in. I was having connectivity issues on my 3gs and that fixed my wifi issues.
doesnt work still gets stuck with the itunes logo and have to restore….
ok so after i get the conect to itunes and plug the phone in with blackra1n open to bypasses that screen and reloades the phone. but every time u reboot or restart or the phone crashes u have to plug it into a computer and run blackra1n again is there a work around for this in the plans to come

try deleting the wifi connection on the iphone, then rejoin it and type in your passkey, should work after that
I tried both a couple of times and didn't work, just restored and re jailbroke with same process and still with same problem :/
reply to all hangs up and blank screen after blackra1n….. u have to reset your iphone ( erase all content & settings on the phone itself) then update to itunes….then run blackra1n….this will fix the problem..
to reset the phone….go to
Setting->General->Reset->Erase All Content and Settings
then update to itunes….
then run blackra1n….
Mine is 3G 3.1.2 already jailbroken and unlock, dont need to use blakrain or something like this. I just download the ipsw custom and restore it. everything is going ok till now
Try it again and open up your task manager
end the Itunes helper process it shoud work then

Blackrain works great for me, installing Cydia works well too. But every time I download a package from Cydia, I get the white apple of death. Its happened 5 times in a row the last 2 days. What the hell is going on? I cant keep restoring my phone every day. Does anyone know what is making this happen? Im using OS 3.1.2 and I have a Mac.

yes jail breaking is the ability to add 3 party apps to the iPhone ie winter board…Unlocking lets you use your phone with t mobile or other gsm carriers..

My iphone is not working. I tryed to jailbreak it, but it and it worked, I think..but then iTunes told me that "my iphone needed to be updated", stupid as I am, I pushed UPDATE, I did this a while back, like 2 months ago or something, and STILL I cant get my iPhone to be up and running, can somebody send me an email with som ways to fix this? Nope, I just got the phone from the APPL store and followed these instructions, the phone always reboots to recovery mode. Hook up to ITunes always updates to 3.1.2.
I have tried this 4 times. I have to give up.
I only had to get a new phone cause the old one did not work. Now all my stuff is gone and all the cool Jailbreak stuff is gone with it.
Are you saying that the screen is black? If so it is probably in recovery, Just let iTunes restore it, and all will be well, no jailbreak, but well.

so now if i Have 3GS OOTB 3.1 preinstalled can i use Blackrain RC2 and it will JB my iphone ?
