Dev Team: New iPhone 3GS Units Not Jailbreak-Proof

New bootrom update hackable says iPhone Dev Team

Earlier this month, we had written about the new iPhone 3GS units shipped by Apple which came with an updated bootrom that made these new iPhone units jailbreak-proof.

If that news made you lose sleep, here is something to cheer about. Now we hear from the iPhone Dev Team that while the new bootrom indeed interferes with the current hacking tools, it is not after all jailbreak-proof.

Bootrom is a small piece of code that runs during the boot up and its primary task is to verify that the boot image is not corrupted. Apple has updated this code to also check for unauthorized firmware like the 24kpwn exploit that has been used to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.

In an interview to Wired.com, Eric McDonald, a member of the iPhone Dev Team has said that while the updated bootrom does indeed interferes with the 24kpwn exploit, which makes it difficult to start the jailbroken iPhone 3GS if it is shutdown. As a workaround to the problem, one needs to tether (connect) the iPhone to a computer to restart it. While this sounds like needless trouble for jailbroken iPhone users, McDonald has said that it is only a matter of time before the jailbreak team release another exploit to counter the new bootrom.

The cat and mouse game between Apple and the iPhone hacking community has been on for over two years now and Apple only knows too well that an updated exploit should be on its way soon. Nevertheless, contractual obligations mandate that Apple provide all technological infrastructure to help its carrier partners like AT&T from losing customers.

Do you think it is better for Apple and their customers if the company decides to end this race by opening up to all carriers and also opening up the iPhone SDK so that jailbreak apps like Winterboard, SBSettings etc, which are currently available on Cydia are available on the iPhone App Store?

Why do you jailbreak your iPhone? Please do let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I jailbreak because i dont like to be put on lockdown by anyone. I like complete control of all my electronic devices and cydia provides just that. i can add custom themes, track my iphone for free with out mobile me. tap-to-unlock is a great feature. I dont have to pay hundreds of dollars for turn by turn voice navigation i get it for free with Xgps. I like the freedom of allowing people i know to have my main password so i dont have to constantly type it in for them but with the app(lockdown)i am able to add passwords to certain apps like text messaging, contacts, photos, and other things i like to keep private. I like having a terminal for free. I like being able to categorize my aps using categories so i can have an unlimited amount of apps and they are neatly in folders on my iphone. I like i can call someone using someone elses number if i dont want them to know using the app 123 spoof, I like that i can block certain numbers if my friends or family or anyone else keeps bothering me with iblacklist. installous is great for adding free cracked apps. there are so many other great apps that help customization its so worth it

I'm a career geek. I've worked as a unix system admin pretty much my whole adult life. I bought the iPhone 'cos it's fundamentally a unix box, and I jailbreak it (1) so that I can ssh into it and back it up and copy photos off/on to it with ssh/rsync and (2) to run biteSMS. I've no particular interest in pirated apps, some of the stuff on cydia is cool though.

  4. K says:

I use it to test out apps and if I like it and its worth buying then I buy it from the app store.

iPhone is the best phone in my opinion, and really great OS system. but apple is being a selfish about it.

  7. I don't do much investing, but I plan to buy Verizon and Google stock and short sell AT&T and Apple or such good brands. The features posted here seems to be nice and also people given positive responce so I am looking forward to it.

I have an iphone 3Gs with 3.0.1 on. I want to jailbreak, what would be the best way to go about it? And how would I upgrade to the lastest firmware once the phone is jailbroken? Or would it be better to first upgrade and then Jailbreak?

  10. Caviar says:

Non-jailbroken and locked iPhone is like share it's ownership 50% mine, 40% apple's and 10% carrier while I paid all, so I bought factory unlocked Iphone and feels like 50% mine and 50% apple's, to make it 100% mine is the reason why I jailbreak my iPhone.

  11. FUN & FACT says:

Great iphone I just love it..will try to get it as soon when I get paid..

  12. Athansios says:

Like all the other posts say, customization! The iPhone comes so locked up. My previous phones, i have been able to use my own ring-tones for alerts like for new e-mail, calendar alerts, voice-mail and so on. Sux these things are heavily guarded.

I bought the phone, paid for it, i should be able to customize it the way i want to, not iPhone's way.

  13. Kikintosh says:

The Main reason i jailbreak my iPhone is that Apple's response to customer's demands is very very Slow.

Most of the feature we have today on the iPhone and the very important ones missing were all provided with the iPhone 1st Gen with 1.0.2 Firmware after jailbreak.

The iPhone potential as a Mobile everything not just a phone, ipod and PDA, but as one of a kind mobile device to revolutionize the mobile phone industry only appeared after jailbreak.

Jailbreak really unleashes the full potential on the iPhone

    i love lamp

  15. fred says:

    lolz nice reason!

  16. Tonhg Stan says:

Because of the RIDICOULOUS prices in Brazil. U$ 1000,00 + the carrier data contract. Oo.

Hey, Jobs, fuck you !!! _|_

  17. Simon says:

I think it was a major mistake of Apple to sell the phone only with specific carrier contracts. I would buy it immediately if I had the choice to pick the carrier. I also know a lot of friends who would do the same and have the money to do it. Running always after the next firmware lock break completely destroys the otherwise outstanding user experience of this technically and designwise outstanding product. The would have easily trippled theri sales already.
It's a pitty that Apple still did not find the right balance between the real consumer need and their financial goals.
    Simon

  18. Ronni says:

As far as I know, apple made a contract with att to sell its iPhone with their carrier for 5 and up to 8 years ( not sure – correct me if i'm wrong about the years ) so they can share profit. It gave new look to att. 48% of ppl switch to att over past 2 years. Apple made his biggest mistake by selling its iPhone with at&t. lets just be honest b/c everyone knows that at&t sucks whether is its signal or 3g coverages, or even from pricing point of view, it has the highest pricing in the market until recently when Verizon took the lead and officially went to war with at&t. One of the the problem with Verizon is that their carrier does not provide sim card and thats the only advantage at&t has. Overall, i think apple should have sell unlock iPhone so everyone can use it

  19. big10 says:

    because i can!!!

  20. Vladimirs says:

I jailbreak it in order to unlock it , couse ive bought my iPhone in the UK and i want to use it in my country(Latvia) !

  21. s says:

reasons? iFile!!! BlueNova!!! SBSettings!!! roqyBT!!! many more usefull tweaks!! and guess what – not all of them are for free – now im stuck with iOS4, cant go back to 3.1.3 JB :/ even with SHSH file stored with Cydia :( :( :(
