PwnageTool 3.1 that iPhone Dev Team had released for iPhone OS 3.1 couple of weeks back only supported iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G.
As reported earlier, iPhone Dev Team has released PwnageTool 3.1.3, which adds support to iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.
PwnageTool 3.1.3 will not support OOTB (out of the box) iPhone 3GS, which had iPhone OS 3.1 pre-installed or iPhone 3GS that had not been jailbroken or pwned earlier.
The iPhone dev team has published the following details on their blog about jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.1:
GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.
What’s a Baseband?
The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.
Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).
The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.
WHICH DEVICE DO I HAVE?
Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.
SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, if your device was Pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 then you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.
iPod Touch 2G
Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes, this will only work if you are already Pwned at 3.0 or 3.1. If you are at 3.1, downgrade to 3.0 and use redsn0w to Pwn 3.0 then you have an upgrade path using PwnageTool.
iPod Touch 3G
At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.
Please take a backup of your iPhone before you use PwnageTool to jailbreak it. Please refer to this post for more details. As with any hack, please proceed with caution as jailbreaking your iPhone could void it's warranty.

So can I still jailbreak with Pwnage tool to 3.1?

I was having 3.0 unlocked on my 3GS. My brother did an upgrade to 3.1 after it released with out my notice when he was copying the files from Itunes.Can I be able to use this procedure?

Still can't get it to work. I still get the Error 1604 when in recovery mode and just for kicks I tried putting the phone into DFU mode to see if that worked and I get an Error 1600… Grrrr…
Just to clarify, I have a 3GS that I had currently JB on 3.0.1 then decided to update to 3.1. Am i still able to JB using this release of PwnageTool? From reading it sounds like i should be able to because I have JB before. I am on AT&T so i don't need to worry about unlocking.

There IS A WAY TO JB A 3G (NOT 'S') via windows, will post a link when I get out of bed, too early at the moment.

Yes you can jailbreak with Redsn0w then unlock with Ultrasn0w. Be sure to point Redsnow to the 3.0 firmware even though 3.0.1 is stalled on your iPhone.
As of now there is no solution to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS if it was not pwned earlier but it is on Dev Team's priority list.
It doesn't look like George Hotz (aka Geohot) plans to release Purlera1n for iPhone OS 3.1. It didn't work with iPhone OS 3.0.1 as well.

Yes since you have already jailbroken/pwned your iPhone, you should be able to use your friends Mac to jailbreak it and able to sync with your Windows machine.

hi ihave 3gs which had 3.0.1 it was jailbroken and unlocked. i had some problems so i had to upgrade it to 3.1. the baseband also upgraded.now my iphone has lost jb as well as unlock. ihavent tried saurik's link to rejailbreak.my question is simple can i jb and unlock it with this pwnage tool just released?
i don't think mike can jailbreak his phone unless he has ecid shsh on saurik server. if he has that on saurik then he can downgrade to 3.0 or 3.0.1 fw then jailbreak it using resnow then he can pwn his phone. updating to 3.1fw withour ecid shsh on saurik server is like 3.1fw out of the box.
I have a question that I haven't seen asked yet. I have an iPhone 3GS with FW 3.0 on it. It has never been updated. Can i use this version of PwnageTool to JB my phone or do I need to JB with older version and then again with this newest version?

tried the pwnagetool 3.13 (on my recently jailbroken 3GS with 3.01), updated by accident to 3.1 and tried this tool…everything went well, created the ipsw file and restored in dfu mode…got stuck while restoring firmware and gives me error code 1604

Why do you need to have your own ECID number on the Saurik Server to downgrade to 3.0 FW? Since apple isn't signing anyones firmware since it is going through Sauriks server. Could I use someone elses 3.0 ECID shsh blob files that are on Sauriks server to downgrade? ECID is just a number right? Maybe we could share that files.

tried this with my 3GS 32GB v3.0 and kept getting error 1600 when phone was in dfu, after several attempts the phone would not boot normally only in restore mode with itunes logo so after 3 hours of trying i had to do an apple restore to 3.1 so now no unlock
:(:( done this to my 2 other 3G 16GB iphones with no problem.
the 3gs is the only one on 02 so not too much of a problem but can this still be jailbroken (NOT UNLOCKED)

sluitje iphone aan op je mac vervolgens ga naar itunes klikn op update nu gaat itunes de nieuwe firmware downloaden kopel nu je iphone af.wacht tot de update binnen is ga dan naar thuismap\bibliotheek\itunes\iphone software updates .
haal nu het firmware bestand eruit en plak je op het buroblad .
start nu PwnageTool dan selecteer expert modus selecteer je toestel klik op volgende onder rechts op pijl dan krijg je een venster daar staat browse for ipsw klik aan en selecteer je firmware die je op het buro blad hebt gezet .klik weer op volgende pijl links onder in dan kiesn build dan vraagt hij waar hij de nieuwe ispw moet opslaan doet dit in (Thuismap\bibliotheek\itunes\iphone software updates)
dat is dus de map waar je de orginele ispw uit hebt gehaald .
koppel nu je iphone af ps. NIET IN DFU MODE ZETTEN.
sluit nu PwnageTool af.

If you had jailbroken your iPhone while it has iPhone OS 3.0.1 then you will be able to jailbreak it. However, since you accidentally upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1, your baseband has got updated to 05.11.07 which is bundled with iPhone OS 3.1 and it is currently not possible to unlock it.
ps mijn iphone 3gs voor de 3.1 firmware was hij 3.0 met jailbreak dus doe dit alleen als je iphone 3.0 firmware met jailbreak hebt .heb je iphone update gedaan met itunes 3.1 orgineel dan kan je je iphone niet jailbreaken op deze manier. en wat de gevolgen zijn als je het wel doet zijn mij niet bekend.
Have a ultraSnow JB 3.01 3Gs. Did not install 3.1 update – Waited for new JB. Tried Pwnage Tool today. Followed instructions. Created Custom ipsw file. Put phone into restore mode, connected to iTune, selected custom ipsw file, restored. My phone was wiped clean….Not cool. Restored from backup. Still none of my apps, contacts, music, etc on the phone, and would not sync 3rd party apps. Really not cool. Tried again – This time did not put phone in restore mode, just plugged into iTunes, held option key and clicked restore – Again selected the custom ipsw file, restored. Obviously, no apps or content on my phone. Tried doing a sync in iTunes. Said sync failed because disk could not be read from or written to. Trying sync again… ultraSnow was SO much easier. Not a fan of Pwnage.
