Augmented reality - where virtual data meets the real world is slowly becoming a reality on the iPhone.
We had written about Yelp's iPhone app a couple of months in which they had sneaked in the Augmented Reality feature through an Easter Egg. But here are two iPhone apps that makes augmented reality even more exciting on the iPhone.
ReadWriteWeb writes about Cyclopedia and Wikitude - two augmented reality (AR) apps that were released for the iPhone this past week. Cyclopedia primarily 'augments' Wikipedia content to your geographical location to provide you information about what you are looking at. For instance, if you are beside a large waterfall and point your iPhone camera over it, Cyclopedia gathers your exact position using the iPhone GPS and also the direction you are looking at to ascertain information about what you are looking at, pulls the information from Wikipedia about the waterfall and displays it to you. As it should be obvious, the app only works on iPhone 3GS since it needs to use the digital compass. Cyclopedia costs $2 on the iPhone App Store.
Wikitude takes it one step further. This app was already available on the Android since a few months back and only recently launched on the iPhone. Unlike Cyclopedia which pulls content just from Wikipedia, Wikitude brings in a user collaboration system. With Wikitude, not only can users read content from Wikipedia and Qype, an international local review site, but also lets users add points of interest using an interface at Wikitude.me.
If you own an iPhone 3GS, go ahead and download Cyclopedia (iTunes link) and Wikitude (iTunes link) right away and please do let us know how you find these iPhone apps.

awww =( no iphone 3g support???
I dont know why ANYONE who has a 3g iphone doesnt have a 3gs because why didnt they just sell it and upgrade to the 3gs lol,,like gees I sold my Iphone 3G 8gb for 400 cash, and upgrdaed to 3Gs for 299.
because some of us aren't eligible for an upgrade yet and don't want to pay $500 for a 3Gs, idiot.
Tried the WikiTude and it works pretty well, However, would love to have a feature were we can actually type in the place were we want to go instead of having a bunch of POI's blobbed in front of the entire screen.
Uh, what he's trying to say is that even if you aren't eligible for an upgrade it's worth it to buy the 3gs for 400 bucks then sell your 3g on ebay for almost the same amount which is what i did. I got 300 for my 3g which means i paid only 100 for my 3gs……..idiot.
agreed. it cost me 38 bucks after i was fully upgraded. would have been less had ebay not taken so much out
Can anyone find wikitude in the app store? when searching I am getting "no matches"
