Earlier last week, we had written about a new update released by Geohot to his Blackra1n iPhone jailbreaking tool that shall help users on iPhone OS 3.1.X to jailbreak their iPhones.
Back then however, Geohot had posted the following disclaimer:
"Warning 3g and 3gs unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team's offerings. Also blackra1n doesn't hacktivate"
If you are one of those looking for a method to unlock basebad 05.11.07 that was bundled from iPhone OS 3.1 onwards, then there is now reason to cheer. Geohot has revealed yet another impending update called Blacksn0w, that will enable iPhone users who have upgraded (in many cases accidentally) to baseband 05.11.07 to unlock of their iPhones and thus work over any GSM network.
Blacksn0w will be available for iPhone users from November 4 and like the previous updates, this one shall also be free. Also, hactivation shall be made available this time around.

I think the Dev Team should take money. People who work hard and innovate deserve a reward. Geohot knows this, they should too. I use products from both sides, but only Geo profits. Good Karma doesn't pay the rent, or buy dinner.
This is good news, I want AT&T to show up on my 3GS properly! One bad thing is Apple should be pissed that people still found an exploit, and they will be even more adamant about security on the next firmware…

Will Blacksn0w unlock a jailbroken 16G 3G (Mac OS X 10.5.8) that was upgraded to firmware 3.1.2 (version 7D11) and now has 05.11.07 firmware? Was able to re-jailbreak after upgrade but lost T-Mobile service / MMS / tethering, etc.

Free is just fine…on the other hand, when you sell your item you are committed on providing support for any problems to all your customers. By the way things are lookin' there are a lot of people that jailbreak their iPhones. Unless you have a big company and hired a lot personnel then that wouldn't be a major problem. If you don't maintain your work and provide support to any discrepancies that arises then you will be criticized and then people will want their money back….lots of headache.
I would like know if Blacksn0w will jailbrake and unlock Iphone 16G 3G running OS version 3.1 (7C144) and modem firmware 05.11.07 or do I need to upgrade to OS 3.1.2

I have a 3GS otb 3.1 FW 05.11.07. I need to tether to xp notebook to connect to the web. Have spent several hours reading various sites but haven't found the info… Do I need to upgrade to 3.1.2 first and then jb using Blackra1n? What next? Or is there another way…?

I have a jailbroken 3gs running 3.0 & 4.26.08 firmware. I want to upgrade to 3.1.2, but not sure if it is worth it to risk loosing what I have now. I can tether with the benm hack and don't want to loose that. Would it be ok to do the upgrade, or stay @ 3.0?
