We had recently written about the release of Geohot's iPhone jailbreaking tool Blackra1n.
Here is a short tutorial that you might find useful in using these tools to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS on your Windows PC.
Some important points to note before we start:
- Hacking your iPhone could void its warranty. So please proceed with caution and at your own risk.
- Make sure that you have iPhone OS 3.1.2 installed on your iPhone.
- The jailbreak requires 05.11.07 baseband.
- If you have a new iPhone 3GS (updated Bootrom), BlackRa1n only supports a tethered jailbreak. This means that once jailbroken you should not let your battery die. If it does die you will need to reconnect it to the computer and use BlackRa1n to boot it.
- Please take a backup of your iPhone, refer to this post for more details.
- After you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone, please checkout our article on tips to keep your iPhone secure.
Instructions to Jailbreak:
Step 1: Visit Blackra1n website and choose the Blackra1n software for Windows by clicking on the Windows logo
Step 2: Download blackra1n.exe (opens download link)
Step 3: Connect your iPhone or iPod to the computer and run the downloaded blackra1n executable file
Step 4: You will now be shown a button that reads 'Make it ra1n'. Click on the button to the jailbreak process
Step 5: Notice the following events on your iPhone:
- The iPhone is placed in recovery mode
- The recovery mode is replaced by a picture of Geohot on your iPhone or iPod
- Your device will reboot
Step 6: You are shown a pop-up. You may press OK
Jailbreaking is complete. You can now see the blackra1n icon on your springboard. If you want to proceed to unlock your iPhone, follow these steps below.
Instructions to Unlock your iPhone:
Step 1 Make sure you are connected to the Internet and click on the blackra1n icon.
Step 2 Select sn0w and tap on Install to start the unlock process.
Step 3 Once the installation is complete, you are shown a confirmation screen. Tap on 'Close'
Step 4 Unlocking is complete. You can confirm this from the Blacksn0w icon on the springboard.
Step 5 You may uninstall blackra1n now. Tap on the blackra1n icon on the springboard and press uninstall.

i tried restarting the router.. the i phone..reboot. resetting network settings and nothing worked.

I had successfully jailbroken and unlocked my iphone 3gs 3.1.2 using blackra1n and ultrasn0w in Windows. It was working fine with another service provider. But while I was trying to send a text message, the iphone suddenly got off (i mean the screen is blacked out as if its turned off). I tried to restart it several times and even putting it under restore mode. Nothing worked. When I plugged my iphone through usb into the computer, its not being recognized. So even Itunes restore is not working. When I am tried to put the phone in silent mode using the side switch, the red dot for silent mode is coming. I am not sure what has went wrong. Please help me out with this.

Everthing was working fine until after i shut the phone off and turn it back on…it asked to update using iTunes otherwise it keep on showing the connection from usb to iTunes.
Is there a way to unlock those that are in the 1%? It seems that I have one. I JB and UL with blackra1n but still get "No Sim" message. I've done a full restore and run blackra1n many times w/ same result. After I load blacksnow, I get 3 bars before it enters "Searching" mode then straight to "No Sim".

so i just tried to jailbreak my i phone 3g and it did eveything it said it should do but after it went into recovery mode and it was supposed to show the other picture before it rebuted it just sat the and didnt move for an hour so i turned it off and back on and it looked just like it did before i tried to jailbreak it, should it still look the same or did it just now work?…HELP
ok so someone had the same problem… on my 3g i used blakra1n to jb, sn0w to unlock with both windowns and a mac and im getting no service with a new tmobile sim. checked carriers and it pulled up tmobile and at&t after a while, but when i selected tmobile it disappears and says carrier no longer available. i even turned off 3g. ive tried this several times. went through the same process on a 3gs with the new sim and it worked fine, my buddy and i have successfully jb +unlocked several phones and havent run into this issue yet, and its my phone this time, kinda bummin

I have an iphone 3g 8fb, firmware 3.1.2, baseband 05.11.07 and everytime I trie to jailbreak it, when I press ''make it rain'' my just goes to recovery mode and stays there. I don't any Geohot. And then I need to restore in order to use it. I have done this about 8-9 times already. Could someone please tell me exactly what to do?

i jailbroke with blackra1n and when i installed winterboard it had to reboot and obviously if you have to reboot a 3gs which is tethered only with the "amazing" blackra1n then it goes into recovery……any ideas?
The guide doesnt mention the fact that IF you upgrade to version 3.1.2 you cant unlock your phone anymore "possibly forever"

yes it`s work. my boss has upgarded his iphone 2g to 3.1.2 via iTunes and has get a locked phone…i used blackra1n to jailbreak and after search on cydia for BootNeuter to unlock…it`s very easy. PS: u need a WLAN internet acces to install cydia and bootneter!!

How can I verify that the Unlock worked? This particular phone no longer has AT&T service and I don't have a sim card or service for a different carrier.

Good evening, in on a iphone 3gs 3.1.2 , firm ware 05.11.07. followed tutorial to the letter and got Snow off blackrain with cydia. however when i put in my English orange sim it just comes up with "different sim detected please connect to itunes" however i have signal "i recived a text at this point" . but i cant use anything on the phone unless i put in my rodger sim again. anyone got any ideas. thanks for your time.
Steve, I have a new 3gs as well but I cant even get it to jailbreak. Did you have to do anything special or did you just follow this post?
And you have that issue because its tethered, there's no way around it yet.
guys, just to reconfirm, every time you guys turn off your iphone or battery run dead. you can only turn it on by reconnecting to the computer and reboot it using blackra1n ? am i right to say that?

yep lame i know but after the next update comes out and gets JB it might go away i hope. SO dont let your phone die or turn off or restart….If so u need a computer and A "U S B" cable and blackra1n to un brick it
Hi there m8 I just downloaded blackra1n as above and clicked on it after attaching my phone. Then click on make it rain, ur phone then goes into to recover and then jailbreaks. It's very easy to do, just read the instructions above. Good luck with the jailbreak, I've had 3 iPhone and jailbroken every one. Hope this info has helped. Doing this on my phone so excuse spelling

my phone is 3G and jb with 3.1.2. But there is no Internet tethering option. Is this normal? If I want that option do I have to hard reset my phone? Does anyone else has this problem?

Okay, so i've jailbreaked my iPhone 3G. It had the 3.1.2 update. I am now trying to unlock my phone. But its saying im not connected to the internet. Do i have to install the 'sn0w' from the Blackra1n app that I have from the JB?

Firstly you need to download cydia, which you do by clicking on the blackra1n app, once you have cydia open it and download all necassary upgrades, then click on sources, then new, and then you need to search for something I have forgotten
