iTunes Rewind 2009: Apple Releases List Of The Best iPhone Apps

Apple releases Top apps list for 2009

2009 is drawing to a close and it has been a very eventful year as far as the iPhone app market is concerned.

At around the same time last year, Apple clocked the 300 millionth iPhone app download and at that point, there were close to 10500 iPhone apps on the App Store.

Today, a year later, we have more than 100,000 iPhone apps on the App Store that have been downloaded a few billion times. With such a terrific growth in the past one year, it is definitely exciting to go back to see which were the most popular apps that actually fuelled this growth.

Users logging into iTunes are now shown a 2009 Rewind section that carries a compilation called 'Best of 2009'. While this is an editorial pick, the Rewind section also contains another list of the 'Top Seller' apps for this period. Both these lists are made separately on two heads, one that shows the list of all gaming apps and another head that includes iPhone apps from other categories. Considering that iPhone games are among the most downloaded applications and can easily overshadow popular apps from other categories, this division makes sense.

So which of the apps have made it to the top? In the 'Best of 2009' list, 'Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor' tops the list of iPhone games followed by 'Real Racing', 'ZENONIA', 'Ravensword:The Fallen King' and 'Earth Vs Moon Ep.2-Enter The Perk Shop'. In the Apps list, 'ReelDirector' takes the top spot followed by 'Magellan RoadMate 2010 North America', 'Jamie Oliver's 20 Minute Meals', 'I am T-Pain' and 'CBS Sports:Live College Games'.

In the 'Top Sellers' section, 'The Sims 3' app tops the list of games followed by 'The Oregan Trail', 'Need For Speed Undercover', 'MADDEN NFL 10' and 'Tiger Woods PGA TOUR', while in the apps list, 'MobileNavigator North America' is number one followed by 'MLB.com At Bat', 'Textfree Unlimited', 'TomTom US & Canada' and 'Golfshot:Golf GPS'.

The iTunes also features a similar list for songs, TV shows, movies, audiobooks and podcasts. You may view the entire lising by clicking here (iTunes link). Check out the list and don't forget to let us know if the ranking matches with your own Top 10 list.
