After Apple announced an update to the iPhone SDK earlier this week, which finally saw users being allowed access to VoIP services over the carrier's 3G network, Israel based VoIP startup Fring has said that their iPhone app now lets users make video and voice calls over 3G.
Announcing this on the company blog, Fring says this does not require any update to the current iPhone app and users wishing to make VoIP calls over 3G may do so right away.
If you are not able to connect to 3G and are shown the usual "VOIP calls are not allowed" message, the company suggests you to try the following steps:
- Tap on MORE at the bottom of the app screen
- Select the option "Go Offline"
- Relaunch Fring
Fring has been one of the hottest VoIP services on the iPhone since the platform opened up for third party applications. The app lets users make regular calls using either SkypeOut or SIP. In addition to letting users make VoIP calls, Fring is also integrated to IM applications for Skype, Google, ICQ, MSN, Twitter, AIM and Yahoo making it a pretty comprehensive platform for communicating with friends and family.
We're not sure why it is taking Skype, one of the most popular VoIP iPhone apps to release their iPhone app, which works over 3G.

hello guys i've been using this appli more than a month now on my 3gs jb and it's ok, sometimes it freezes but most of the time you can use it. im on vodafone ireland, you should have "my 3g" appli for it to run
You should probably try the updated version of the Fring app, which supports 3G natively to see if its better.
Fring is cool. I cant wait to try the FastMall iphone app shake your iPad for the nearest bathroom. Will be awesome.
