Google Voice Coming To iPhone “One Way Or The Other”

Google Voice to come to iPhone one way or the other

It seems like a lot of time has passed since Apple rejected the Google Voice app for the iPhone.

The furore raised by the media against Apple's actions back then have now died down and it appears that iPhone users too have learnt to live without Google Voice

But the company at the center of the controversy in this case still remains optimistic. In an interview to Michael Arrington from TechCrunch at the Crunchies award ceremony, Vic Gundotra, the Vice President of Engineering at Google indicated that the company will ensure that iPhone users get Google Voice "one way or the other".

It is not clear if Vic was referring to the legal battle between the two companies over the rejection of Google Voice app or if this was an indication of Google taking the web app route to bringing Voice to iPhone users. You might remember that developers of VoiceCentral, one of the Google Voice based iPhone apps that was rejected last year have indicated that they shall be launching a web app version of their service soon.

What do you think? Would you rather wait till an iPhone app for Google Voice is launched or would you like a web app version of this sooner? Tell us in the comments.

Why so much fuss about a voice app come on the thing is still not as good as google say it is. I'm sure not killing myself over a google voice app.

  5. Z says:

google should make its r&d teams compete with apple's and make their own easy jailbreak tool. not unlock (illegal) but jailbreak. just to say a final "fuck you" to apple

  6. Mdelfs says:

I can't wait for Google Voice to finally come to the iPhone.

  7. Fazle says:

Anyone that uses Google Voice knows the actual benefits of using the service. The only reason I am even considering getting the Nexus 1 and ditch my iPhone is because placing calls via Google Voice on the iphone is a pain in the ass without a native app

  8. Sameazel says:

Not true.I use google voice all the time on my iPhone.
All you need to do is have your google # in your contacts, when you use the service its real simple.Or you could just ad a shortcut on the desktop. The calls are free in the US and it does save money.Just add your google # to your Alist and kaboom your calls are free.

  9. Mickey Mouse says:

I have google voice on my jailbroken iPhone and I must say, it's great! I have two complete phones in one iPhone. I have my regular line for friends and family and GV number for business. It's usefullness is more than what I expected. Best of all, I can turn on do not disturb after business and just get transcripts of the voicemails that people leave, sent to my phones email.

  13. Jay says:

The only thing I'm looking for in a GV app is push notification of voice mails. I don't know if a jailbreak app can do that.

  14. p to the izzle says:

I have GV Mobile on my jailbroken iPhone. I have my voicemails from my cell number forwarded to Google Voice. In settings for Google Voice I have everything set to forward to email. Then I set up push Gmail on my iPhone. Now I get emails when ever I have a new SMS or Voicemail. Notification is very fast. I couldn't be happier with GV Mobile or Google Voice. Saves me a ton of money on my text plan.
