Folks at Boy Genius Report are claiming that they have got details about Apple's next generation iPhone OS - iPhone 4.0 from one of their trusted sources.
According to their source, iPhone OS 4.0 will allow third-party iPhone apps to run in the background and include a revamped user interface for easier navigation. But will be limited only to iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and more recent iPod Touch models.
According to BGR's source, iPhone OS 4.0 will include the following features:
- There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
- “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
- Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
- The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
- The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.
We have heard many rumors that Apple is working on allowing third-party iPhone apps to run in the background so it will be great to see it included in iPhone OS 4.0. It also looks like another strategy to push iPhone 2G users to upgrade.

How about a way to hide the keyboard in a text so that we can see the persons original message. Unless I missed a hidden thing that allows this already on my 3GS??
How about Bluetooth support to others phones like photo transfer and camera in front for video conference.

1. Printing from web brouser and email.
2. Sync with Outlook notes and tasks
Can the built in FM/Wifi/Bluetooth antenna be used to broadcast the songs you're playing to your car's radio with out the hassle of cables or fuzzy FM transmitters? Just wondering if it has the hardware capabilities so the update can improve it and the dev team make full use of it.
How about getting 3.1.2 to work normally on 3G, keeping the battery alive, not hanging etc etc.
Next, open up so don't need to jailbreak!
How about a "No it's not another iPhone and I don't want to restore/new" for the next OS/iTunes builds

Just press "Edit" in the upper right corner of the screen, the keyboard will drop down displaying the message you are replying to. Just hit "Done" to bring back your keyboard and message.
It's the hardware that needs most rethinking:
-Removable battery!!!
-Removable SD card slot!!!
-Front camera >= 5MPixels
-Full Bluetooth: file exchange, a2dp, AVRCP etc.
-Accessible file system (no need for jailbreaking), without the patronizing bs: we do it for your own good >:=O Different user levels: User and Admin are perfectly workable.
Will this ever happen? Ever? May be when interest, in the iPhone, starts to dwindle?

it definitely has the hardware: the bluetooth chip is capable to receive fm and bluetooth of course
only the firmware is going to be updated..

Give me a choice besides AT&T and I'll upgrade my wife's iphone from 2G. Didn't buy 3GS because of AT&T and I won't upgrade and sign a new contract until I can get a decent service provider like Verizon.

I use this feature every day. Must have a radio that supports bluetooth connections. My kennwood excelon KDC-X993 does a nice job.

I'm surprised no one has asked for flash like in every other post lol. Anyways I wish we could customize our text tones and our background wallpapers at least. Either way, I'll still jailbreak lol.

iRealSMS features of quick reply and quick send and inspell like all blackberrys have. If I had just these features built in, I wouldn't even need to hack my phone. The quickreply/send alone saves my life hourly. I don't need teathering or fm radio or any of that. Sure it would be nice, but as a phone they need to make better phone features as the hackers have done. Thank you for your time
how about giving the iphone push to talk (Direct Connect) that would bring about a lot of people in the business world that won't get one just because it is lacking that feature!

Yea, i drive a pretty beat up Camry haha. I don't even want to think about removing the CD player. But what app do you use to stream music via bluetooth or is that option automatically pop up when it's paired with the radio. Sometimes my music will play over bluetooth and sometimes I don't even see that little option.

How about letting us use the wireless N that is already in the iphone so that I can use it with my time capsule.
an icon maker would be nice so that you dont have the same icons as every one else. i had to hack my phone just to be diff and how about more icons on the pages and dock, i have seven ion my dock and a 5W x 6T spring board and i love it. i like to personalize my phones and would love for that to be part of the new OS

just create those groups in your address book on your computer and they will sync to the phone…

u kno theres a shit load of apps for radio tuners rite??? there iHeartRadio, 0ooTunesRadio sumthin like that just DL on tha APP store, of if ur smart enough just ssh in ur iPhone.
This is just another silly question, really guys do ur homework n look into wut iPhone can really do, i bet u didnt kno u could listen to radio stations across tha globe.
I'd like to see voice input for e-mail/searches/SMS/any app that wants to use it. Also may be the ability for the phone to speak your SMS or E-Mail.

The radio apps are only for internet radio –> i need wifi for my touch.
So fm radio is simply easier and could be possible with the right software.

I would like my iPhone to have even more stupid and useless apps so please fill the app store with more junk that I will never use so you can hype the 100,000 apps.
On a serious note, true multi-tasking is huge for me in addition to customization. I cannot believe they do not allow the change of wallpaper. I can't believe something so basic like that is not available. But then again, we only got cut and paste not too long ago.
I use Pandora with no problems over 3G.
