Apple Briefly Adds New “Explicit” Category For App Store Submissions; Then Removes It

iPhone apps with sexual content

There were reports that Apple has added a new "Explicit" category in the iTunes Connect system for App Store submissions, which indicated that Apple might reinstate over 5000 iPhone apps with sexual content that were recently removed from the App Store due to complaints from women and parents.

MacRumors speculated:

The reason for Apple's addition of the new category is unknown, although it seems possible that the company may have reconsidered its decision to remove the "overtly sexual" applications in the face of backlash from developers and users and has decided to create a dedicated category in an attempt to find a middle ground in the controversy. The use of a dedicated category for explicit material could supplement the age-rating system used for all App Store applications to easily make the entire category invisible to certain users using Parental Controls.

New Explicit Category

However, Gizmodo is now reporting that that the "Explicit" option is no longer appearing as a category option in iTunes Connect.

According to an iPhone developer, the new "Explicit" option available this morning on the App Store submission software is now gone. He just got off the telephone with Apple, who confirmed the removal.

According to the developer, Apple said that, while they are thinking about it, "it's not going to happen anytime soon."

There is still no explanation why it appeared in the first place.

We’ll keep you posted if we get any more updates.

I wonder if the removal of these apps is Apples way of trying to reduce the number of wankers in the world today ;-)

rather than 'explicit' they should name it 'Objectionable Content' and chuck all them bullshit bible, q'ran and UK football apps in there too. God/Allah/Budda botherers cause more shit than teenage wankers (and I just hate soccer lol)

This is perfect! Not so much the pron crap, but Apple could use this model for so much more! All Apple needs to do now is open up a "Non Apple Signed" App section so we can all be set free!

All the sheeple still get their walled garden, and all the people out there that actually know what they're doing can finally use their iPhone to it's full potential.
