Steve Jobs: iPad Won’t Tether To The iPhone

Apple iPad launching on April 3

If you were hoping to buy Wi-Fi only version of Apple’s iPad and tether it to the iPhone then we have some disappointing news.

A long time Apple fan from Sweden sent an email to Apple to enquire about iPad tethering, and he received an answer from none other than Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs.

Jezper from Sweden sent the following email to Apple:

I'll keep it short.

I'm Jezper from Sweden, a long time Apple fan, currently about to replace the very last computer at home with a brand spanking new iMac i7. I'm also awaiting the release of the iPad. However, I have one question:

Will the wifi-only version somehow support tethering thru my iPhone?

Two devices, based on the same OS, with already built-in technology to share one data plan suggests a secondary contract could possibly be redundant.

From the look of your keynote, where the iPad sits well between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I was hoping the three of them could interact as seamless as possible.

All the best,
Jezper Söderlund[a famous DJ in his own right]

He got an even shorter reply from Steve Jobs:

No.

Sent from my iPhone

So looks like you won’t be able to tether the iPad to iPhone’s data connection, unless someone figures out a way to jailbreak iPad like the iPhone.

Folks at 9to5Mac have even published the header information, which has revealed something interesting. It looks like Steve Jobs is still using iPhone OS 3.1.2 even though Apple released iPhone OS 3.1.3 more than a month back.

Were you expecting iPad to tether to the iPhone? Do you plan to buy the Wi-Fi version of iPad or will upgrade to iPad Wi-Fi+3G based on this news?
