Folks at TechCrunch report that the Apple App review team has rejected Tawkon, an iPhone application that purports to predict the radiation emitted by your iPhone.
While the reason for the rejection has not been revealed, it is believed to be because of the lack of credible scientific backing to the results offered by Tawkon.
According to the developers of the application, the Tawkon iPhone app uses a variety of parameters like distance from cell phone tower, signal strength, weather condition, terrain, antenna proximity from the body, antenna orientation and travel speed to analyze the iPhone's dynamic SAR (Specific Absorption Rate). It is to be noted that the iPhone app only "predicts" the emitted radiation and may not provide absolute measurements. However, it can be highly useful to users who may want to ensure if calls from a particular location is safe in terms of radiation levels. For instance, calls made from your basement may cause a higher level of radiation to be emitted compared to calls made from your living room and the iPhone app will thus help you in making a judgement on a safer place to make your calls from.
However, we feel that Apple is justified in rejecting the app. Though radiation levels from the iPhone have been deemed to safe enough, applications such as Tawkon may lead to false concerns among users about cellphone radiation affecting their health. This can have larger implications. Nevertheless, Tawkon has indicated that the company shall continue to be optimisic about being approved by Apple. The developers expect to sell the app at a $5-$10 price tag.

It's absolutely ridiculous for a company that creates/sells a computing platform to stipulate how it is used by it's users. This is not a morally questionable application that we as a society deem should be hard to access as in R+ or X rated media. It is an algorithm that suggests how the environment may or may not affect you – and it only suggests the possibilty. It does not guarantee the situation. We as individuals should have the right to use this information as and how we want to. Put a disclaimer on the app indicating the nature of this information at the most but don't ban it. I think Apple is violating free speech, fair trade practices and many other ideals that 'democratic' environments should uphold. Boo Apple!

Given the lack of any hardware of any form in the iPhone, this is clearly 100% prevarication.

Having an application which monitors the radiation emitted is something savvy consumers need to have and be informed about. When you ask a salesperson at an Apple Store about the SAR ratings of their iPhones, they look at you like they’ve never heard that question/concern before. Ironic since Apple likes to see itself as being ‘cutting edge’.
It’s only ‘cutting edge’ when it suits their marketing plans.
Apple needs to be ahead of the curve in supporting their customers who are concerned about possible health hazards of their products.
