It took the iPhone Dev team less than a day to jailbreak iPad.
They achieved this milestone by porting the “Spirit” jailbreak to the iPad that runs iPhone OS 3.2. The question that many asked was: Will it jailbreak iPhone and iPod Touch?
MuscleNerd has confirmed that this method will also jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
According to MuscleNerd, the “Spirit” jailbreak could also allow users of the latest iPhone 3GS models, which come with updated Boot ROM to unlock their iPhone (i.e. baseband 05.12.01 that comes bundled with iPhone OS 3.1.3) to use it with any carrier.
He tweeted:
“the "Spirit" JB will (also) work on 3.1.3 when released.”
“3GS owners benefit from "Spirit" even more than 3G (since 3G is forever JB-able). Also, both 3G/3GS can use next carrier unlock.”
However, he still hasn’t provided a release date on when the software tools to jailbreak and unlock iPhone will be released, which many users are eagerly waiting for.
It is still not clear if Dev Team and Geohot who had announced untethered jailbreak are waiting for Apple to release iPhone OS 3.2 for iPhone and iPod Touch or working hard to get their tools ready.

Agreed, also cant help thinking that all this hype is giving Apple clues as to what they need to do to foil these exploits even before they're released, silly really – the devs should keep hush and just release when THEY think the time is right, without they hype – word wil get around the world in no time, no need for pre warning Apple with hype.

you know, for those of you who think Apple is SO against jailbreaking… think about it a little: wouldn't it be smart for Steve Jobs to have a jailbroken phone? His company pays teams of people millions of dollars to come up with ideas, and yet there is a *free* team of people out in the world who provide him with ideas and inspiration and direction… I would be shocked if he doesn't have a jailbroken iphone himself. It's just smart business. If Apple wanted to prevent iphones from being jailbroken, I am SURE they have enough technical expertise to ensure that it couldn't be done. Look how much extra business they get from having a phone that people can jailbreak and make to their liking? They GAIN from it too.
It doesn't really make so much business sense for them to block jailbreaking. Doesn't really make much sense to me why the Dev Team is so protective of their releases. I mean, I dont' think they or Apple really see it as a battle against one another. They just challenge one another… and both end up with better products.

its about quality control and being able to ensure that all apps that r releases are up to certain standards. it may be pretty restrictive but for a company that has built its name on reliability, it is good qcto not have just anyone releasing their glitchy apps to the iphone cuz at the end of the day if someone sees an iphone running crappy, that reflects on apple, not the software dev. U ever had a treo oe a windows phone? apps are so hit or miss w/ those, no one governs whats out there.

Also you can tell if you have the old/new bootrom from your serial number. If the fourth and fifth characters in your serial are lower than 40 than you have the old bootrom and can jailbreak.
Its the new bootrom people who are having the most trouble (me included >.<).

As far as I am aware, if you already have a jailbroken 3.1.3 and you're on the old boot rom then you might be able to downgrade the baseband by using fuzzyband….have a look on youtube for a tutorial…http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=7609

I agree. I have been waiting for a jailbreak ever since I bought my unlocked 3gs. Every single day they are talking about a future release. Yes we can jailbreak but we are waiting for the new firmware 3.2 , then NO, we are waiting for the 4.0 , then we are waiting for the ipad , and then they are waiting for the new model of ipad. Peopleeeeeeeeeeeee…. after the release of the firmware (most probably tomorrow 08/04) if there is no jailbreak, then there will be no jailbreak.

Jailbreak apps are GOING to get disseminated by Apple engineers to find out exactly how that software can be added to a future release.
Take 'copy & paste' Apples last big thing, KennyTM (I think) had Clippy up & running way before it hit 3.0
It's all part of the game though, devs release apps / packages that Apple will reject through Cydia, there's no way that Apple would ignore what's going on behind their backs, they want to find out and integrate as much as possible to make JailBreaking less attractive.
If it wasn't for People lime Comex, MuscleNerd & Saurik etc, we'd be using stock devices too

I got a replacement 3g iphone from apple after I dropped my unlocked one down the toilet. It was set up with the new softwear 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01
I have managed to jailbreak it myself with redsnow (and i am useless with computers) I am waiting patiently for an unlock now. I dont think anyone should be slagging of the dev team or anyone that is working to provide an unlock, after all they dont have to bother and its for everyones benefit! I am grateful for the free jailbreak and will be equally grateful for the unlock, whenever they release it

I have a question for the Dev Team with regard to Unlocks. Have they considered getting hold of a Factory unlock phone and figuring out how apple does it. I have a personal interest in this and i suspect many others do as well.
I do no need a JB but only need an unlock so I can use mumtiple SIMS when I travel. I would like to have an unlocked phone that I can upgrade to the latest apple firmware without any worries about breaking it. I also find a Tethered JB to be unsuitable for me. I have a 3GS running 3.1.3 and baseband 5.12 will be Travelling to Europe in three weeks time and find it frustrating that I cannot use my Virgin Mobile sim when I arrive in London.
Prior to moving to ATT for the Iphone I had blackberries with T-Mobile and always found that a quick Email to T-Mobile telling them that I was travelling and asking for the unlock code was always successful.
YOU KNOW WAT, I AM SURE IF GEOHOT AND DEV-TEAM KEEP HOLDING BACK THEIR UNLOCKS AND JAILBREAKS FOR SPECIFIC TIMES AND WHENEVER THEY WANT TO, SOME OTHER PERSON WILL JUST COMEOUT WITH THE UNLOCK AND JAILBREAK AND THEY WILL BE LEFT IN THE DUST.
