Apple has finally released iOS 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch users.
One of the things that users who have jailbroken and unlocked their iPhone are eagerly waiting to find out is whether iOS 4 can be jailbroken and unlocked.
iPhone Dev Team have just published a blog post advising users who need to software unlock their iPhone to avoid updating to iOS 4 until they release their tools to jailbreak and unlock iPhone iOS 4:
We are working hard on a release to our tools that will jailbreak your device (or give you iOS 4 via the jailbreak train) and provide you with a carrier unlock.
Until these tools are released you should hold off on updating your device until we have fully tested our tools with all the relevant devices.
If you rely on hacktivation or a carrier unlock (ultrasn0w) then you should not upgrade until we have fully tested and released our tools.
Don’t be tempted with unofficial PwnageTool/redsn0w bundles or releases, just check here or our team twitter for real time release information.
Remember, we risk our devices so you don’t have to (but this time anyone who has made a mistake upgrading their baseband firmware at 3.1.3 or 4.0 should be OK real soon ;)
They have also published a video, which says it all:
MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has reconfirmed over the weekend that it will be possible to unlock the new baseband (05.13.04) that is included in iOS 4 Golden Master and that it might be possible to also unlock iPhone 4. Its the same baseband in iOS 4 that was released today, so expect to get the good news soon.

An unlock is available BEFORE the JB. Well that's something new
How to JB 4.0? I am on 3.1.3 JB. Dev team and iphonehacks talks about unlock, but you can't unlock without JB.
2. Jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy
Yeah, this is for people who have 3.1.3 or under, who has been waiting for an unlock. Gotta wait on the iOS4 jailbreak to unlock that. At least we know it is unlockable, which is good news!

I have an iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3. Not jailbroken.
How do I need to proceed to get jailbroken iOS 4? Or is it impossible at this stage?

Wait till the iOS4 jailbrake tool is released. Then jailbreak, add the repo to cydia and unlock. Just don't update to v4 till the tools are released to do it.

Yes i used ultransn0w 0.93 and i was and still am using 3.1.3 Baseband 5.12.01 Boatloader 6.02.
The jailbreak for 3.1.3 has been out for a few months, todays new update was the carrier unlock. I used redsn0w for the jailbreak. Hope this helps, at least i can finally use my iphone after 3 months using it as an itouch.

I have unlocked my 3gs 3.1.2 5.12.01 I receive carrier signal but it is too weak. I can not call but I can surf via EDGE!!! Very strange. Can anyone help me out?
Try rebooting your iPhone.
Tried everything possible, like rebooting, taping, battery recharge nothing worked. Now I upgraded to ios4 to see what will happen

i have a 3gs on baseband 5.12.01
used spirit then redsnow to unlock
The unlock only 1/2 works – it can see sim card – but i get a blue circle
Its not the sim I dont think as when I try to make any calls – i get call failed message
additionally when I select network – I get restricted network message
The sim does work on several other unlocked phones
Just driving me nuts at the minute trying to get it to work on iphone

I have tried everything till now without success. It is very strange that data network works very well but there is almost no carrier signal and I can't make any phone calls. I hope there is an explanation of this problem.

I have tried different operator sims
I tried an O2 no signal – again message on restricted settings …
work Vodaphone no phone signal but do have data signal – again message on restricted settings …
Tried my data vodaphone sim (broadband) shows 3G – again message on restricted settings …
Wife's Orange sim (UK) (the original network to which phone is locked) it works
I guess the un-locking process has unlocked data but not voice calls
Yes I got the same problem here. I have tried several different operators, only data is working. So I am waiting now for a possible upgrade and JB+unlock for IOS4. I am out of options for now.
is there a way to downgrade from 4.0 back to 3.1.3
not unless you keep a back-up image of the 3.1.3 build – but knowing apple there is bound to be other stuff thats updated (firmware/baseband)

it semm doesnt work for me.3gs 3.13 jb by spirit,unlock by ultrasnow–new one.put different sim in,network sign shows up on the top of the screen,its means unlocked,but at same time phone pop up with a message :detected a different sim ,connect to intunes,enmergency call only.how can do now?

Perhaps I'm an idiot or perhaps I have missed a step. I have successfully upgraded my phone to ios 4.0 and such. However, I am trying to get t-zones to work, but have not had any luck. I have looked and saw a few things that lead me to believe I have to edit the APN under cellular data. However, I don't have access to it. Another site tells me to go in and edit it, which I have done. Still nothing that allows me access to edit it. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to clarify, I am not able to access the cellular data manually. Apparently there are ways to unlock it and access it, but I haven't been successful in doing so. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Work great, I just JailBreaked then unlocked my 3GS on iOS4 (firmware 05.13.04) last night. This morning I borrow a T-Mobile sim of my friend and tested it, work like a charm. First, it keep searching for signal, but I remember that on the blog someone said that you have to turn off the 3G, I turned off the 3G, work beautifully with T-Mobile. Thanks to Dev Team, they work hard for us and get nothing. They are my angels.
