Fring, the Israel based mobile VoIP company has released a new version of their iPhone application that will allow users to make two-way video calls from their iPhone 4.
The update also brings several other new features like support for multitasking, a cross-community social stream and an enhanced address book.
The two-way video calling feature on Fring is pretty similar to the native FaceTime feature available in iPhone 4. However, the Fring iPhone app has two significant advantages over FaceTime.
Firstly, users can make video calls over their carrier's 3G network besides Wi-Fi. You may be aware that FaceTime on iPhone 4 works only via the Wi-Fi network.
Another critical advantage is Fring's cross-platform compatibility. The company has introduced the two-way video calling feature on the Android and Symbian platforms as well, which means that users can also video-chat with friends who do not own an iPhone 4, which is one of the limitations of FaceTime currently.
These added benefits are likely to propel the popularity of the Fring application in the near term.
You can checkout the video below to see Fring's two-way video calling feature in action:
The new version of Fring also supports the iOS 4 multitasking feature, which will allow users to run the iPhone app in the background so that you can receive new video calls or voice calls just like a phone call without needing to proactively launch the iPhone app.
Earlier this year, Fring was also one of the first to bring the VoIP calls over 3G functionality to the iPhone. Fring has been one of the hottest VoIP services on the iPhone since the platform opened up for third party applications. The app lets users make regular calls using either SkypeOut or SIP. In addition to letting users make VoIP calls, Fring is also integrated to IM applications for Skype, Google, ICQ, MSN, Twitter, AIM and Yahoo making it a pretty comprehensive platform for communicating with friends and family.
If you do not have Fring on your iPhone yet, you can download the latest version of the Fring iPhone app from the App Store by clicking here. As always, drop us a line to let us know your thoughts on the new features.

i knew it was a matter of time before someone made this work. cant wait to see the rest of the apps for the front facing camera
great, cant believe apple approved this app though, considering they're restrictive dicks about everything. Any ways good shit.
When will we see a 3GS video conference app. I know it's hard with a rear facing camera but it's notn useless!! Use a mirror to show urself. You could show something to the other party like a concert or ball game. The possibilities are endless and it's about time someone released it. I know apple will give a tuff time to approving this app bc apple wants to push ip4 but release a cydia app then. I moved to another country and a facetime3gs app would work wonders!!!
search on youtube. someone already made a video. the 3gs can see someone on the iphone 4, but if your on the iphone 4 u dont see anyone with the 3gs. u can only hear them
There already is such a app! Its called Live Link 3G!
Sadly its restricted to only 2 ppl but well, you can also use uStream!
I dont know why ppl get so fired up. Ok, you have a front facing camera now, finally, but your phone could do that stuff before!
I think its great that Fring has updated their app and this means that I can ditch my skype app as skype will start charging for calls made over 3g network soon. Long live Fring.
pretty nice video is nowhere near as clear or as somoothe as face time tho
works really bad.
You cant use it with skype anymore, i cant log into my skype account as i searched the whole application and there is nothing for skype. Or im missing something here ???
I downloaded yesterday …. It works good over 3G !!!!
I like face time ,but wish it was not limited to wifi and iPhone 4 customers only… Thanks fring and apple!!!!
No skype icon in the add on section whats going on ??
Foul language makes you sound dumb!
Guys that have 3G or 3GS have you even tryed the fring? Because I did on my 3GS and the rear camera is working on fring for video calls. I have done them in skype and also for the normal fring video call test. Try it out guys.
FaceTime seems to be a better quality stream.
Just tested both using the same WiFi connection.
same here, until yesterday it was fine, now the skype addon is gone :S
I will never get this app just because of the guy in that video being so awkward and annoying.
Remember if your using you own 3g connection that it could use a lot of data. Until somebody test out how much data is the big deal as not many people have and unlimited plan.
The support page said that data usage is about 1mb per minute for video and I think it said something about 132kb for voice over sip
Being a douche about language on the Internet makes you sound dumb
skype as an add-on was on there at first, i was able to do video call to skype from fring on iphone4, and hour later its not on the app any longer\\
does anyone know why skype was pulled from the app?
I was asking about the exact same thing . I dont know why they removed it and i can no longer get skype add on with fring .
Bravo John
I have the same problem,
Help us out guys
Skype icon is gone,
Video calling with this iPhone is super!
i must be missing something…
