Next Generation iPod Touch To Get Front-Facing Camera For FaceTime, 5-MP Camera, HD Video Recording And More

New iPod Touch

Electricpig.co.uk reports that Apple’s next generation iPod Touch could come with a 5-megapixel camera with flash and HD video recording capabilities that were recently introduced in iPhone 4 that was launched couple of weeks back.

Electricpig claims that UK retailer John Lewis revealed the new specs at its “Xmas in July” event in central London.

The UK retailer also claims that users will be able to make FaceTime calls over Wi-Fi on the next generation iPod Touch, indicating that it will get a front facing camera.

MacRumors also points out:

a slide presented by Steve Jobs at Apple's introduction of the iPhone 4 indicating that the company expects to ship tens of millions of "FaceTime devices" this year. As noted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber, Apple's decision to use the term "FaceTime devices" rather than simply addressing the iPhone 4 suggests that the company has more in store for the feature, with the iPod touch being an obvious possibility

According to them, the new iPod Touch will come with a three-axis gyroscope that was included in iPhone4, which will bring more gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience on the new iPod Touch.

Folks at 9to5Mac report that several merchants on Alibaba.com are already offering parts that they claim are of the next generation iPod Touch. As you can see from the screenshot below, the parts have a hole in the center of the front plate, which is probably for a front-facing camera.

It seems quite logical for Apple to bring some of the new features that were introduced in iPhone 4 to the fourth generation iPod Touch. Apple is expected to release the next generation iPod Touch in September.

Let us know what you think about the new iPod Touch specs. What’s on your wish list?

looks pretty cool. If I didnt alreadyt have an iPhone 4 I would really look into one of these…

  3. peterparker says:

i knew this was coming but wudnt it start to make the iphone obsolete?

  4. Nobber says:

Dumbass – can you make a phone call on an iPod then??

  5. Fuck a camera and hd video recording, give me a retina display

@peterparker, isn't the iPad going to make the MacBook obsolete? Lol they're different beasts

  6. Shutyoface says:

You can make face time calls… So yup ;)

  7. Nobber says:

I dont get what the big deal about face time is!!! You need wifi and most likely you will have a computer right by you and why not use skype or smth else to communicate!! I have had the iPhone 4 since it came out and never seen a point where I would have preferred to use face time instead of Skype!!
If they support face time over cellular network I might say it is a useful feature!!

    Jailbreak and Unlock please!!!!

  12. theBankRobber says:

It's has to due with video chatting using data and not minutes. At&t network has a hard time trying to keep everything running for the iPhone at a stable rate. As soon as there LTE network rolls out it might change due to the fast download and upload speeds. With me having an Evo, this will make the Android and iPhone users get along a little better. Were the only ones who have such a great feature and should back each other up. Yes we prefer our phones for our reasons but how many of us on diff networks still use our phone as a phone to talk to one another.

  13. Kwopau says:

Okay as for the face time in itouch, it is going to be impossible because how are you gonna initiate the call? So Facetime will not happen unless you can do it from msn messenger on your itouch then I can understand but from it's native, very impossible.

  14. m.h.truth says:

on skype via wifi yes. peterparker, all though not nicely put has a point. Which is Apple wouldn't be doing themselves any favors buy upgrading the ipod to this degree. if you look at past trends… apple only put the 3gs processors in its $300-$400 models(32gb & 64gb) leaving its 8gb the same as the previous year.

I PREDICT (yea lil ol me) AT BEST…apple will put a 3mp(3gs quality) cam in the touch NO FLASH, a4 chip, gyro, retina display and maybe a radio like the nano and call it a day.

  15. Maybe says:

I think they will pit a little less than that. I doubt they will put the a4 chip. And possibly only offer one or the other of radio or retina display.

  16. Ike says:

    Alibaba.com ….
    some legitimate trade
    some horse thieves
    some camel dung thieves

good luck choosing the right merchant

  17. wolverinemarky says:

cool i can see apple doing this

  18. Saj says:

I personnaly think that Apple should recall all the Iphone 4 because of the reception issues and convert them into the next generation Ipod touch ONLY and save all the money that currently being used on the ipod and invest them into a Next Generation of Iphone altogether.

  19. Awesome this hopefully confirms my theory that they will soon be coming out with a new ipad with the front facing camera and increased ram. I can't wait!

  20. Frizzz says:

    Great!5 megapixel!!!!
