JailbreakMe 2.0 released by Comex is the easiest method to jailbreak iPhone but it doesn’t hactivate the iPhone, which is required if you don’t want to use the official iPhone carrier SIM.
Sherif Hasim had figured out an easy way to activate iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G without needing the official iPhone carrier SIM but looks like it doesn’t work anymore as users are reporting that they are getting “Different SIM detected” error message.
The iPhone hacking community has released a hactivation patch to fix the “Different SIM detected” error.
You can follow these instructions to install the patch:

First follow this guide to activate your iPhone without official iPhone carrier SIM (to get out of emergency mode).

If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone then use JailbreakMe to jailbreak it.

Install Ultrasn0w on your iPhone to unlock your iPhone.

Launch Cydia from your jailbroken iPhone homescreen.

Tap on the Manage Tab and then tap on Sources.

Tap on the Edit button and then tap add to add the following repo URL to add sources: http://cydia.pushfix.info

After it is successfully installed, tap on the Search tab and search for Hactivation.

Tap on the Hacktivation Patch.

Then tap on the Install button and then Confirm to install the patch.
The hactivation patch fixes the problem by patching a system file on the iPhone, preventing future activation and keeping your current activation (achieved using phonebook SIM) even if you change your SIM.
You can now remove the phonebook SIM card from your iPhone and insert the SIM from any other GSM carrier. You won’t get the “Different SIM detected” error message.

try restoring and jailbreaking all again. sometimes it's due to installation issues
Had te same problem, spent ages downgrading to 3.1.3.. So has anyone tried it?
After installing Ultrasn0w mms doesn't work anymore. removed it and mms back.
There is a patch for that now.

My Iphone 3gs 32gig update ver 4.0.1, firmwere 5.13.04 mc model. I unlock my iphone with untrasn0w, it works greatfor everythings, except wifi n internet work very slow, sometime worked, sometime didn't work, n didn't find the server… What could I do? Help… help me please.

I installed hacktivativation patch from Cydia by adding source http://cydia.pushfix.info before starting upgrade.
But i got screwed, when upgrade got over my phone is blocked and its itune is saying ur simcard is not supported. Kindly help me….i am in India and dont even have phonebook sim.

downgrade your iphone to 4.0 and do the same steps you did on 4.0.1
I had my Iphone 4 OS4.0.1 activated via AT&T sim. Then jailbroken and installed ultrasnow. When I cut down my Tmobile sim (tried twice) it gives me an "no sim installed" error. Does anyone know what the issue is and how I can fix it? How can I tell if my iphone 4 is truely unlocked?
Have iPhone 4 4.0.1 Jailbroken with jailbreakme.com then unlocked with Ultrasn0w. Phone worked last night but now a message pops up and says "SIM Failure" and says "Invalid Sim" in the top left corner. Will try the patch tonight when I get home from work and post my results. My question is will the patch fix this problem or is this a totally different problem I am having?
Ok. So the problem was the sim card not being connected right. Aftermessing around with it a bit it started working again. Be careful when you cut your sim card to size.

inserted DITS phonebook sim, connected
and I get SIM CARD not supported error in itunes.
