iOS 4.1: HDR Photos Available Only To iPhone 4 Users; Hack To Enable the Feature For iPhone 3GS And iPhone 3G Users

iOS 4.1

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos is one of the major new features introduced in iOS 4.1. But looks like it will be available only to iPhone 4 users and won’t be available to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users.

At Apple’s September 1 special event, Steve Jobs explained that HDR photos are created using 3 photos taken in rapid succession: one normal, one under-exposed, and one over-exposed. The photos are then combined using some pretty sophisticated algorithms to create an enhanced composite photo.

The webpage that describes the new features in iOS 4.1 software update on Apple’s website states that the HDR photography feature will be available on the iPhone. It does not mention the availability of the feature on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

iOS 4.1 - HDR Photos

TiPB speculates that one of the reasons for not bringing the feature to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users could be due to the slower processor and lower 256MB RAM. iPhone 4 comes with Apple’s A4 processor and 512MB RAM.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users as cdevwill has announced that he will be releasing a hack that will enable the feature for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. It goes without saying that it will be possible to enable it only if you have jailbroken your iPhone.

Users can also download apps like Pro HDR (iTunes link to HDR related apps) that have been available on the App Store for quite sometime that bring this functionality to the iPhone.

As reported earlier, according to Apple’s UK and Spanish site iOS 4.1 is scheduled to be released tomorrow, September 8 (though Apple has updated their International websites to say that iOS 4.1 will be coming soon just like the US site).

In addition to the HDR feature, iOS 4.1 also includes feature such as HD video upload, ability to buy TV show rentals and Game Center, Apple’s social gaming network and also the fix for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth and iPhone 3G performance problems

Are you disappointed that the feature is not coming to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G? Or are you still looking forward to the iOS 4.1 software update?

  5. Sean says:

Wait, where did anyone actually say that it would only be for the iPhone 4? I didn't see any direct reference to this in the article, only theorizing. If no one has actually confirmed that 3G(S) users won't get it, talking about how it may be possible to enable through hacking sort of begs the question.

Also, TV show rentals, sounds just plain silly.

  6. who cares says:

    gehot does not like us any more:{

  7. Matt says:

id love to see geohot back, but it wont happen, and soon pestering a$sholes will pi$s the dev team off also and then there'll be no jb ever again

Dude stay witht he times, GeoHot has given up on the iPhone hack community, he refuses to release anymore hacks.
The DEV team is where its at these guys dedicate themselves to hack the iPhone for free. Respect to the DEV Team.

  17. Goose says:

It should be interesting to see when the next jailbreak will come out. My guess is that Redsn0w will be released for the 3G's and then Comex's hack will be released a few weeks/months later. Can't go wrong with Redsn0w sucks to have a 3GS though :)

  18. Mac says:

Its cuz of idiots like u that made geohot quit

  19. Riff says:

Geohot got $$$$ from apple to shut it down he's a sellout. He is probably waiting for them to ask him to fix all their holes so it can't be hacked.

  20. Riff says:

Dev team will never sellout like geohot cause there are many of them much harder for apple to pay off unlike lone wolf geohot

  21. me says:
