Geohot has just released limera1n to jailbreak iOS 4.1 and iOS 3.2.2.

We had reported yesterday that he had discovered a new bootrom exploit and was planning to release a jailbreak tool called limera1n that made use of it soon.

Limera1n RC1 will jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4,  iPad, the iPod Touch 3G  and the new iPod Touch 4G.

Geohot has posted the following details on his website:

iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G
4.0-4.1 and beyond+++

limera1n is unpatchable untethered thanks to jailbreakme star comex

Geohot claims that he has released limera1n today a day before the release of greenpois0n by the Chronic Dev team because he wanted them “to do the right thing”.

He has currently released the limera1n RC1 for Windows users and is planning to release the Mac and Linux version shortly.

Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk. Please don’t forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPhone.

If you want to unlock your iPhone then do NOT use limera1n. Dev Team will be releasing PwnageTool that will preserve the baseband while updating the iPhone to iOS 4.1.

We hearing reports that it might not be properly tested so our advice would be to wait until we hear some positive feedback.

But if you're brave enough and willing to take the risk then you can download limera1n from this link.

Geohot has just updated the post with the known bugs:

  • 3GS new bootrom is broken fix pending
  • some people need to restart to get the Cydia icon to show up after installing

Update 2:

Limera1n prompts you with some simple instructions to jailbreak your iDevice. After you have successfully jailbroken, search for the Limera1n app and install Cydia – the App store for jailbreak apps. After installing it, restart your iDevice.

If you have problem launching Limera1n app or Cydia doesn't up even after restarting then try jailbreaking again. 

Update 3:

Joshua Hill (aka p0sixninja) of the Chronic Dev team has tweeted that they will incorporate the exploit used by Geohot in limera1n in their jailbreaking tool – greenpois0n that they were planning to release tomorrow. They might not be able to release it 10:10:10 GMT tomorrow. But it means that they will preserve the SHAtter exploit for iOS 4.2.

Update 4:

iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) users should try using the latest version of limera1n as Geohot has fixed the issue in limera1n RC3. 

You should also be able to uninstall the limera1n app.

Update 5:

iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G users can use Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.1.

    No matter what the ungrateful Chronic-Dev team say on their twitter page, Geohot has done the right thing. What's the point in exposing the GP patch to Apple if it does not work on all ios devices. Best to save that for later.

    It deleted all of the core apps on mine, but its because i only had 200mb left, if you don't have much space left delete some stuff before installing otherwise you will need to restore

    NOTES: Must put phone in DFU mode (not restore mode)

    After you see the limera1n logo it'll turn off. Turn on phone. Scroll till you see the limera1n app. Install Cydia through there. Then restart phone.

    GeoHot wanted the ChronicDev team to wait to release their exploit, so it can be used in the future ;-)

    Another known issue should be that Cydia isn't showing up on some iPhone 4's despite restarting the phone. Try jailbreaking again, most likely it probably didn't actually jailbreak. Solution: Make sure that when you through out the jailbreaking process you close iTunes quickly when it opens. When the Lime shows up on your screen disconnect your device and that should indicate your jailbroken.

    i have a iphone 3gs and tried to jb with limera1n, phone enters into recovery mode and then limera1n says hold home + power button, then it enters into dfu mode and a message pops up that it is done your device is jailbroken. Phone automatically turns on and cydia is not there…….it don't work……..tried it four times!

Now the phone is stuck with on apple sign and every few seconds switches to the low battery sign but the battery is fully charged . Also my computer and iTunes does not notice the phone connected to it at all . Wat should I do

    snowbreeze and redsnow only work on specific devices while greenp0ison isn't released yet (it will work on all idevices), and limera1n will work with all idevices too (the only jailbreak out right now, 10/9/10, that can jailbreak all idevices).

    jorge just follow closely the direction ;) once ur on dfu mode and see the apple logo let go of the home after that ull see the green logo then the phone will shutdown by itself… then u have to power it on then go to limerain icon hit it and install cydia …ater that turn off ur i4 then turn it back on and u will see cydia icon ;) enjoy!

    I can confirm that it works on my iPod Touch 4G! I just had to reboot my iTouch manually after installing Cydia.

    You were right for some reason, I tried with Itunes open and it worked for me. I tried like 5 times with out Itunes did not work. Good job on that. Jailbreak does work. I installed on ATT locked Iphone4 4.1 iOS.

    Hi All,

    i've successfully jailbreak my iphone 4 OS4.1 factory unlock with the latest linera1n. just need to follow some onscreen instructions to get the phone from recovery mode to DFU mode to get the jailbreak to work.

    after the "make it rain" process is done, press on the power button to turn on the phone

    1. you should see limerain without any icon pic.
    2. press on it to install cydia
    3. after cydia is installed, if there's no icon, than you power down and power up again and you should be able to see cydia.
    4. the rest will be simple

    i had to use Umbrella 4.1.4 to kick my iphone 4 outta recovery for some strange reason the latest ver wasnt doing it.

    next after u update to 4.1 with a preserved BB
    jailbreak using Geohots exploit, DONT PUT IPHONE IN DFU BEFORE LOADING LIMERA1N, i try that and it didnt work the first time, leave your phone on its regular home screen then click "Make it Rain" and follow the steps presented to you by the nice GUI :) hope this help alot of you guys, as for a updated ver of UltraSnow that is compatible with 4.1 am not sure if it works, am using ATT so no need for me unlock my iphone but as i mention before IT DID NOT UPDATE MY BB and i was able to JB my phone.

    Just follow the instruction which shown in limera1n during installation . Do not put iPhone in DFU mode before executing the limera1n, this doesn`t work for me. After the limera1n icon is on iPhone screen you have to install cydia through limerain |white icon| and then reboot to see cydia and you are done. WORK ON IPHONE4. THANK TO GEO

    * I've executed limerain (didn't run in compatibility mode or run as administrator).
    * Clicked "Make It Rain"
    * Followed instructions (many times during the whole process iTunes opened automatically and got closed by me but I kept the button pressed as asked).
    * Then I released HOME once "hold home" disappeared
    * When everything was done I turned on the iPhone
    * Ran the limera1n app (white icon)
    * Installed Cydia
    * Turned the iPhone 4 off
    * Turned it back on (cydia icon shown up)

    NOTE:
    *first run of cydia rebooted my iphone without notice
    *limera1n app cannot be removed through the app itself. You must use Cydelete or go and delete the app folder manually
    * Cydia on Iphone4 is a bliss!

    No, you cant unlock as the baseband shipped with iOS 4.1 has not been unlocked. You should stay away if you want to unlock your iPhone 4.

    You can use limera1n with iOS 4.0.2 so don't upgrade to iOS 4.1 as the baseband bundled with iOS 4.1 cannot be unlocked currently.

    I have the same problem with my iPhone 4, iOS 4.1, 02.10.04 – the lime logo does not show up at all – tried it in XP running on my mac via a VMWare Fusion, as well as on a XP running PC laptop. Strange thing is that the limera1n program does always show that the jb process went OK. Any suggestions?

    I had jailbreaked my iPhone 4 with limera1n in first go itself …. !!
    After the phone restarted I could see limera1n icon in the iPhone but the icon is filled with White color all over. Opened the icon and could able to Install Cydia. Again after restarting the phone could able to see Cydia icon again filled with White color.

    Restarted the phone once again and there u go. I got limera1n n Cydia icons working and wid actual icons :D

    Author, thanks for the article but it has a minor mistake. You're saying SHAtter will be preserved for 4.2, but it won't just be for that. It'll be held back until the 5th gen devices are released (iphone 5 etc.) since Limera1n will be able to jailbreak 4.2 and any subsequent firmwares just fine.

    ok so guys I recently bought an Iphone 4g Factory unlocked 16gb, with the preinstalled iOS 4.0.2, i was waiting for Geohot to get this out and finally its here!

    It worked perfectly, the phone is now iOS 4.1 i updated it through Itunes and then Made it rain. i will explain the steps that I did.

    1. I read through the comments to see if there were any bugs, there were just a couple complaining about Cydia not being there, ill get to that in a while, so before you download and install it please read the comments and what systems this works on.

    2. I backed up my phone through Itunes, and saved my SHSH, before i updated, then i updated the phone to 4.1 by clicking update on the Iphone main menu which was around 585MB, i downloaded it at the same time i downloaded LimeRa1n from this post, and kept it saved on my desktop.

    3. After the Update the Iphone restarted, and was running on 4.1,(remember mine is factory unlocked) then i closed Itunes and opened LimeRa1n and clicked on make it rain. The Iphone was on the main menu at the time, after i clicked make it rain, it restarted by its self and I followed the instructions which is hold the power and home button, then just hold the home button and release the power button, it installed successfully, and i restarted my phone straight away.

    4. After the restart I opened the LimeRa1n icon on my phone menu and it showed the Cydia program in it, i clicked on it and on the top right corner it wrote install, i clicked on install, and the phone did its business then after it installed it restarted the phone once more, after the restart Cydia got installed and my phone was finally jailbroken. If Cydia did not get installed try restarting again or installing again once more and then restarting. if once more that did not work, you might of one the LimeRa1n installation wrongly, so try doing that again, remove limeRa1n or just go back and restore your phone to your last backup.

    and thats about it, if it works youve got it, and thanks a million Geohot, its nice to see people working hard on making all of this possible.

    Program runs fine and ends saying that iPhone was successfully jailbroken but Lime never shows up on the iPhone's screen and no app to install Cydia shows up either, regardless of how many times I reboot the iPhone and run the program.

    One more thing for those of you who have factory locked DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT UPDATE YOUR PHONE TO 4.1! there is no possible way of unlocking it at this given moment! and as i said i have a factory unlocked phone, btw I think people with the 4.0.2 can use LimeRa1n also to jailbreak. but i read this somewhere, i dont have a source to prove it. and no one has confirmed yet. unless you want to try be my guest ;)

    ok Guys, I've had my Limera1n broken iphone running all day with no problems. I don't need unlock so was happy just to go ahead and Jailbreak.

    Yes I rebooted the iphone to get Cydia on the screen but who cares? It works and I'm now installing apps that Apple refused us :-)

    this guy really screwed everyone over with him releasing his jailbreak tool-now that he did it before shatter released theirs they are not goin to release it… how selfish and how fucked up that he did this.even dev-team took a jab at him on thier blog! it was crab move without a doubt and his jailbreak is not a jailbreak for life so if u ask me the dev-team r playing thier cards right by waiting to see how apple will react

    my question is, can i still jailbreak it with limera1n? cuz im reading some wierd discussion up there.. I dont want to unlock it, its already factory unlocked and my sim is in it.. i juts want cydia lol
