Google Adds Editing Capabilities To Google Docs For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch

Google Docs

Google has just released a new documents editor for Google Docs, which will allow users to edit documents on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Back in September, Google had announced that it will be adding editing capabilities for Google Doc for iPad users.

The mobile version of Google Docs allowed users to view documents in read-only mode until now. So by offering Google Docs on the iDevice, Google will be able to compete with Apple’s popular iWorks suite of apps for the iPad and other third party apps such as Documents to Go and Quickoffice that have been offering this capability for quite sometime now. But since Google Docs will be free, it could still emerge as the winner even though it has taken so much time to introduce the feature.

This is what Andrew Grieve, a software Engineer at Google have to say about the new editing capabilities on the Google Mobile blog:

  • You can work on that important memo...while on the bus or train to work.
  • If you’re behind on a group proposal, but really want to make it to the ball game tonight, your whole team can work on it from the bleacher seats.
  • You can take minute-by-minute notes at a concert so you’ll always remember the setlist. And your friends can jealously follow in real-time at home.
  • ...and the list goes on!

You can checkout a brief demo of the editing feature:

If you’re a Google Docs users, you can check it out by pointing your iDevice’s Safari browser (iOS 3.0 or later) to docs.google.com and selecting the document that you want to edit.

Will you start using Google Docs or will you still prefer to use Apple’s iWork suite of apps or one of the other third party iOS apps? Let us know in the comments.

The DocsToGo and QuickOffice don't work properly at all. They appear to mangle any CSS – complex documents have been corrupted simply by adding a space (or anything else). Last time I looked they don't work with the latest generation Google Docs app. Google's editor does not appear to work properly with Paid Google Enterprise customer accounts – there is no edit button – at least not on the iPAD.

I use Google Docs all the time for multiple to-do lists. The lack of editing has been the main reason I don't use my iPad much. If this works well, it should be really useful for me.

  3. Ehud says:

It does not seem to work on the iPhone yet. Also, it does allow you to edit on the iPad but it does not seem to have the ability to create a new document. If you want it to rival the other products, you must give at least half of what we get with the desktop version. This is a good start, but you have a long ways to go!

Does this only work in the US can't get it to work on phone or pad!!

  11. Paul Left says:

Sort of works, but on ipod / iphone it's very limited and the spreadsheet is very clunky.

Not really ready for real use to my mind.
