How To Replace iPhone 4 Glass Back Panel With Aluminium Backplate

DIY iPhone 4 back case

We have written about a number of third party back cases for the iPhone in the past. You may remember the beautiful titanium alloy back casing for iPhone 3GS and the aluminium backplate for iPhone 4 quite distinctly.

Such mods are becoming increasingly popular for iPhone 4 and are also among the easiest to perform if you have the necessary tools.

This guide will take you through the step by step instructions necessary to perform this procedure.

Before you proceed, please note that you will need the iPhone with the original back casing when you take it to Apple for support. So remember to replace the iPhone with the original casing under such circumstances as you would end up losing the warranty on your iPhone. For the process, you will need a #00 Phillips screwdriver. You can buy this from any hardware store in your neighborhood or purchase one from eBay.

Step 1: The iPhone 4 back panel is primarily secured through two screws on either side of the charging port at the bottom face of the iPhone. Use the screwdriver to unsecure these screws from their position

Step 2: Hold the iPhone with the touchscreen display facing downward and the charging port on your end. Now slide the back casing up by applying gentle pressure with both hands on the panel.

Step 3: The casing should budge. You may now carefully remove the panel.

Step 4: Place the replacement casing over the back side of the iPhone and place it in the slid-up position (as shown in the image below):

Step 5: Now hold the casing as in Step 2 and gently slide the replacement casing into position. You will hear a ‘click‘ sound when done correctly.

Step 6: Secure the two screws back into position using the Phillips #00 screwdriver. Ensure that you do not secure them too tightly.

The process is complete. You can now enjoy your new-look iPhone 4.

My favorite body style has always been the very first iPhone. Very cool. Thanks.

Too bad this works only for those without apples new special 5pt star torx screws… It’s becoming a norm for serviced iPhones, replacements and also newly bought phones…

iPhones are very expensive to maintain. Shouldn’t they just work?

    • FredMc

You aren’t required to replace the back glass for it to work! For that matter, the phone works just fine as a smartphone without updates, jailbreaks, or any other add ons. Those are just what makes the iPhone so awesome!

  • Itsyaboy

I think they changed the screw size to a torx t3 or t4 kuz I used the Phillip untill I got my phone replaced and now it doesn’t work anymore

  • Kwopau

Of course this will definitely void warranty

Just so you guys know, this is a cool looking back case, but I lost at least 2 bars of signal strength. I put the old one back on, black and metal is the way to go!

i have the same issue but i kept the cool back plate.

  • Rcas

I took mine in to the genius bar with a bumper case on and an aluminum back… no issues and the employee looked at it, tapped the back and said “thats cool”.

I ordered mine from CNN website as stated in the older post regarding this, it looks great and I have not had any issues regarding reception or signal loss due to this case. Many of my friends here in Korea are very envious of this case, and wish that it were easier to obtain. Great product, but I wish that the text print on the back would have been better quality, I can see after time that the text will become worn off because of the paint and not engraved like the original Apple glass back.

The original black back looks waaaaaaaay better.

The iPhone 4 is perfect the way it looks

I just out the aluminum back on mine and while it looks awesome, the flash is now useless with out a divider, and the camera seems to be washed out somewhat, like light is bleed into the lens.
