iOS 4.2.1: Update For iPhone Jailbreakers And Unlockers From Dev Team

Jailbreak iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3G - Redsn0w

Apple released iOS 4.2 (or iOS 4.2.1) for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch earlier today.

iPhone Dev team has provided a quick update for users who want to jailbreak and/or unlock their iPhone.

Before they go on to explain the current situation, they have advised users to avoid updating to iOS 4.2.1 until they release tools for iOS 4.2.1.

iPhone Dev team has provided the following details for users who want to jailbreak their iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch:

The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G.  Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.”  You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Next are the owners of all the more recent devices.  The good news there is that due to geohot’s limera1n exploit, all recent devices can be jailbroken (this will be true until Apple released new hardware that fixes geohot’s limerain exploit in the bootrom).  The bad news is that right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on all of these recent devices.  A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.  @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it.  No word on how much more effort it will take though (please don’t bug @comex about it!).  (We also have an alternative method that may work, but @comex’s method is much more elegant.)

iPhone Dev team hope to release tools to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 later today:

Well if you’re a JB developer or tinkerer, you’ve already probably used the redsn0w mentioned in our last post to jailbreak 4.2.1 and at least get SSH working.  But beyond that, there are still some last minute issues with MobileSubstrate and comex’s kernel patches that are being fixed.  We’ll tweet and post a blog update when it’s all available (we hate to give ETAs, but barring any unforeseen problems, probably later today).

iPhone Dev Team has provided the following details on their blog for users who want to unlock their iPhone:

As always, ultrasn0w unlockers please stay far far away from this official firmware (and all official firmware). Wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1. IPSWs that don’t update your baseband!

Dev team has also provided an update for users who are eagerly waiting for Ultrasn0w for iOS 4.1 and now will be looking forward to one for iOS 4.2.1:

After redsn0w is officially released with the new Cydia and kernel patches, we’ll be able to assess the unlock situation.  It’s already looking very promising though, so expect the unlock for the 3G and 3GS to be coming this week.  The i4 unlock is taking more effort though, and no further concrete info is available about that yet.

Dev team has also adviced users to take a backup of SHSH Blobs (ECID) using Firmware Umbrella. Please note that if you have already jailbroken your iPhone, iPod Touch then Cydia would have taken the backup automatically.

As always, we’ll let you know as soon as we’ve any further updates. So stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

  6. iPhoneHacks says:

According to the update, iOS 4.2.1 for iPad can be jailbroken but currently it would be a tethered jailbreak. Comex is working on a method to come up with a method for an untethered jailbreak but you will need iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs.

  7. Digitaltouch says:

I will wait till it's all ironed out. But happy to hear things are rolling in the dev's favor.

the tethering scares me now :( i am getting a new iphone in about 2-3 weeks. AT&T will let me upgrade without any fees and I'm planning to get the new iPhone. now I wonder what OS ver would that iPhone come in. I think it's unlikely that they have some worker at the att store upgrading iphones as new firmware comes out… do they?

  13. sim69417@hotmail.com says:

Sorry for such a lame noob question.

  17. iPhoneHacks says:

Yes, however don't update to iOS 4.2.1 until Dev Team releases the tools so it can be confirmed.

What about if you already have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS using GreenpoisOn? Would you have to jailbreak your phone again once updated to iOS 4.2.1 with new jailbreaking tools? Or will GreenpoisOn still work? Any advice or information will be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Ed

  35. iPhoneDev says:

Once a device has been jail broken with the ability to install new software, why not use iTunes to backup a means of jail breaking again after an iOS change?

Simple solution: write an app that takes any existing app from the AppStore large enough to be a "wrapper" for the Cydia app and places the Cydia executable inside of it. The app would appear to be normal (even the checksum can be fudged) and would be backed up by iTunes. Running that app would just run Cydia. Afterall, we are just looking for a means to copy new apps to the phone.

This is how we use to do things with other platforms, what am I missing here?

  36. Microsoft fan boy says:

Not that I'm an expert at this or anything but I think there's a tad bit more involved in jailbreaking than just getting Cydia installed…

  37. jon says:

apple ships phones with the latest OS… like instantly… so if you don't have it in the next day or so… your SOL.

  38. jon says:

would never work… apps installed by itunes are run in a sandbox… they have no access to anything but specific API's outside of themselves… they would never be able to have the needed root access to the phone to install other apps, change files, create directories, etc etc etc

you are over simplifying and ignoring the fact that apple has many security features in place.

  39. vivienne says:

If I've already jailbroken my iPhone 4 using Limera1n for iOS 4.1, and a new one is later released for iOS 4.2, how would I go about upgrading that jailbreak?
Would I have to restore my phone, install 4.2, then jailbreak and THEN reload all the apps I had previously?

    Thank you so much!

  40. iUrAs says:

Pwnage Tools 4.1.2 or SnowBreeze 2.1

  41. iUrAs says:

If you have already jailbroken your iPhone 4, you just have to wait for PwnageTool 4.2, cook your custom iOS 4.2 firmware (using PwnageTool) and restore (use alt key) with iTunes.

If you update your iPhone 4 with official iOS 4.2 firmware your baseband will be update and unlock will not be possible.

  42. fas says:

Finally we have some hope of converting ipod 4 to iphone 4

  43. samual says:

  44. Sumeeth says:

I have upgraded my 3G iphone to iOS 4.1 (8B117). The baseband is 05.14.02. can some one please help me with the following doubts?
    1. Can i jailbreak it using redsn0w?
    2. Is redsn0w available for windows users as well?
    3. I need to do the unlock as well. Can some one please tell me when is the ultrasn0w release expected to unlock 05.14.02 baseband?

  45. Alaa says:

i have an i phone 3g withe ios 4.1 and Modem firmware 05.14.02 how can i unlock it please any one can help

  46. iPhoneDev says:

Yes, I did over simplify the process for the sake of boring some, but it is certainly possible. Here is how….

Let's say iOS 4.3 is released. We (the various dev teams) figure out the changes to the new version iOS and we would then know exactly what is required to patch it (jail break so we can access everything). So, now as a user (*before* updating to iOS 4.3) you would download from Cyida the special app that converts an existing AppStore app into our jail break app, call it "FauxRa1n". This is the app we created that will patch the OS and install Cydia. We run FauxRa1n it prompts you for a legit AppStore app (big enough to contain the patching code and Cydia). The app is modfied. Backup your phone with iTunes and the app will be backed up. Now, we update the phone to iOS 4.3 and then restore our backed up files. We then run the modified app that was restored and suddenly iOS 4.3 is jail broken and the Cydia icon appears. From here we can get PkgBackup and do a restore.

This process completely eliminates the need for a PC or MAC. Of course, this only works if a phone has been previously jailbroken.

  47. Jailbroken iP4 via Limera1n says:

Cming from an older JB iPhone4 OS 4.1, how do u save/restore all your dwnloaded apps and like still manage to have it in ur latest upgraded version (say like 4.2.1)?? Anyone pls enlighten me with this? Tnx!

One more thing, if u have factory unlock unit that was already JB, would there be hazards involved by just upgrading latest iOS version via iTunes & just pick appropriate JB tool to JB again??

  48. iPhoneDev says:

"would never work… apps installed by itunes are run in a sandbox… they have no access to anything but specific API's outside…"

The sandbox can be washed away with an exploit.

  49. Lavender says:

You can also backup your SHSH blobs independently of jailbreaking (including before you jailbreak) by using the program TinyUmbrella (formerly known as The Firmware Umbrella).

This will make a backup of your SHSH blobs to your computer, and by default, it will save an online backup with Cydia as well. I recommend doing this TinyUmbrella SHSH backup now, whether you jailbreak now or later or never.

There's more to jailbreaking and whether you can or can't unlock – just don't update iOS until you know exactly what you want to do *and* how to do it.
