Redsn0w To Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 For iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch Released

Jailbreak iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3G - Redsn0w

iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, iPad and Apple TV 2G.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 makes use of Geohot’s USB bootrom exploit used in limera1n for iOS 4.1.

Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 is available for both Mac and Windows users.

As Dev team had explained in the update yesterday there is good news if you are an iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G user and some bad news for users who own an iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G.

iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G users will be able to enjoy the benefit of an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w.

Unfortunately, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G users will have to manage with a tethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using Redsn0w. As Dev team had explained yesterday:

A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.

Comex is working hard to bring a untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for users with newer devices so we’ll let you know if we have any further updates.

Redsn0w will NOT hactivate or unlock your iPhone. So if you want to unlock your iPhone and currently have iOS 4.1 or lower running on your iPhone then please wait for Dev team to release PwnageTool for iOS 4.2.1 as it preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that you can use Ultrasn0w to software unlock your iPhone. Dev team is also expected to release a new version of Ultrasn0w shortly for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. They have mentioned that the unlock for iPhone 4 users will need more effort and are not in a position to provide any further information currently.

Please remember that jailbreaking your iPhone may void its warranty so proceed with caution.

You can download Redsn0w using the download link provided by Dev team at the bottom of their post.

Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes.

  2. DLock says:

    whers the unlock… thx anyway

  3. Jason says:

I have to wait till i get the untethered version, mywi makes me restart on a regular basis.

  4. mick@nospam.com says:

why bother releasing tethered jb:s for phones ???
    Anybody really using it ??

  5. Zang says:

I just want untethered for my iPad :P I know not BIG issue… but tethered can be a real pain in the damn ass if you travel and only bringing your iPad/iPhone X_X

  6. Zang says:

Because occasionally, the new updates actually FIX the phones alot… ALA 4.1 for 3G…

You can say all you want, but only when I crash something or do something stupid to reset device… that is only time I ever get the phone to reboot… It has never been so dead as to need a charge except when navigating all day on TomTom.. naturally expected though..

So no, tethered isn't a problem for about 99% of people… People just like to complain.. Like you :P

  7. simon says:

so if i go update my phone to 4.2,will i use redsn0w to jailbreak it,thnkas

  8. gee says:

I wonder if the new ultrasn0w will work on 4.1 so you can keep your untethered jb but still unlock it.

  9. P_NY says:

is not working for me, I have an iPhone 4 FW 4.2.1 used Redsn0w and Cydia appears as a white icon and wont open :(

  10. Pegger says:

RedSn0w 0.9.6b4 does not support iPod Touch 2G (MC)

  11. Don says:

what happened Zang?? you just comment to the favor of tethered jailbreak!! it's not good for you anymore, or you just joined the 1%?

  12. manastashcanyon@yahoo.com says:

How do you know if you 3Gs has the "new bootrom"?

  13. Jasonjason says:

So will my 3GS iOS 4.1 and 5.14.02 be tethered or untethered if I use redsn0w?

  14. Kenny says:

Cydia will install on my iPad?

  15. Austin says:

Umm.. If i update and jb with the teatherd jailbreak, can i still get unteatherd if he releases it?

  16. gee says:

I think it's under Settings – General – About. Look at your model number and see if it starts with MC or something else. Mine is MC so it's the NEW bootrom.

  17. Vince says:

The new ultrasn0w that will be released will work ony any firmware, Ultrasn0w is not firmware dependant

  18. Vince says:

Yes, but you would have to restore and jailbreak again… Not a problem, my Ipod Touch was using a tethered JB until I restore and used Jailbreakme 2.0. Go ahead and JB it!!

FYI an iDevice can always be restore to factory settings after a JB so jailbreaking it will never stop you from restoring, just be sure to save you SHSH blobs after each FW update to be able to use them in the future if you need to roll back.

  19. Rick says:

I just installed on my Ipad with cydia the problem is most things you install including CYdia updates makes you reboot so you are foreever re jailbreaking… wish I waited for GEOHOT to do something

  20. Tlaloc says:

Reminder to all, wasn't mentioned in blog: Cydia isn't 4.2 ready yet!!!! You'll have to ssh your deb files onto the phone for them to install. If you don't know why that means then just wait until they have it ready… Otherwise, if you don't have you shsh's saved, your in for a world of hurt!

  21. re says:

there is a application in cydia tha let's you respring without rebooting

  22. lrs says:

    APPLE HAS PUT A B B REQUIREMENT IN IOS 4.2 !!!!!!!!!!!

  23. S41N7 says:

Cheka works fine. The new redsnow will install it if you tick the option.

If you get the White Cidia icon it means you have not tether booted the device follow these steps.

    1) connect and turn off your device
    2) run redsnow follow the instructions up to the the option screen (tick the boot device now or whatever)
    3) follow the sequenced prompts – the trick here is to continue holding the home button until the pineapple appears.
    4) your good to go…

  24. Geocool says:

So all reviews so far that i've read haven't been fully successful w/ regards to untethered JB??

  25. Geocool says:

& Guys, can anybody help me out if there's a teeny -tiny chance i could save & restore all my pre-JB installous/cydia apps in case i upgrade to latest 4.2.1? gracias!

  26. d brown says:

redsnow keeps locking up halfway through for me, any ideas anyone

  27. Kinky19 says:

Jailbreak worka fine, unthetherd on my iPhone 3G! Also
    Cydia works superb!

  28. lrs says:

    what is your B B ?

  29. bestman50 says:

I just bought an iPad 16GB Wi-Fi, My model number starts with MB does that mean I can jailbreak it with out the theathering problem?

    bestman50

  30. JP says:

Sorry but I'm kinda new to this jailbreaking stuff. When I see people talk about bootrom is that the same thing as the modem firmware? Also I am one of the many that got a little excited about 4.1 and lost my unlock when i jailbroke with limera1n. SO if I have 4.1 with 5.14.02 should I still wait to get 4.2.1 or does it not make a difference? Am I just waiting for the same unlock on 4.2.1 as i am right now with 4.1 on 5.14.02?

  31. JP says:

Also if I am waiting for the same unlock either way would it be better to just keep 4.1 so that my jailbreak is untethered? Would my jailbreak on 4.2.1 be tethered?

  32. simon says:

can anyone tell me if i could upgrade my ip4 4.1 to 4.2 and use redsn0w to jailbreak it,thanks

  33. cyberbeast says:

hi i runned redsn0w on my brothers iphone 3g everything went well except when i went to the home screen to open up cydia it crashed or closed out automatically. need help

  34. lrs says:

yes it will do not upgrade

  35. JP says:

If my 3GS is an MB am I on the old bootrom or the new?

  36. ARTLAYUG says:

HOW TO UNLOCK IPHONE 3G WITH MODEM FILMWARE 05.14.02?

  37. simon says:

    what should i do,please let me know,thanks

  38. Zth says:

So let me see if I understood…It has no difference if I have 4.1 with 5.14.02 in my 3GS or if I upgrade to 4.2.1? Am I just waiting for the same unlock on 4.2.1 as I am with 4.1 on 5.14.02? There are two answers but also two questions in both interrogatives!?!?

  39. JayRolla says:

Works great on my 3g also. Cydia seems to also be at least 50% smoother.

  40. Jesus says:

I hate apple for this .. They shuld themselves relase the unlock …

  41. ALTERIAN says:

Please everyone make sure you read first, try to understand then ask questions. Don't just post a question without researching. Thanks

  42. Prince Of Canada says:

is not working for me, I have an iPhone 4 FW 4.2.1 used Redsn0w and Cydia appears as a white icon and wont open :(

  43. Jacky says:

    "naturally expected though.."

  44. JP says:

anyone seen an eta on the new unlock from any sites? just wonderin

  45. fas says:

I am tired waiting, this is where Android rules
