Apple Releases iOS 4.3 Beta To Developers; Includes Personal Hotspot, AirPlay Video For Apps & More

iOS 4.3

Apple has just released the first beta version of iOS 4.3 (build 8F5148b) to developers of iOS Developer program.

iOS 4.3 beta is available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation and iPad.

The release notes does not provide any details about the changes but developers who have installed the beta version are reporting some interesting new features in iOS 4.3.

iOS 4.3 includes the mobile hotspot feature that was one of the major features of the Verizon iPhone that was announced yesterday. We will have to wait and see if carriers like AT&T will support the feature. You may recall that AT&T had not offered the tethering feature to iPhone users for nearly a year.

We are also hearing reports that iOS 4.3 beta allows users to stream videos from apps to compatible devices via AirPlay.

iOS 4.3 will give iPad users the option to use the switch at the side of the device as a mute switch or screen rotation lock. As you can see in the screenshot below, users will be able to change it via the Settings app.

Folks at MacStories have observed that Apple has added new multi-touch gestures for the iPad in iOS 4.3:

It looks like iOS 4.3 has some cool new gestures built specifically for the iPad. 4 & 5 finger gestures; pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking tray, swipe left/right to switch apps.

Apple seems to have also changed the FaceTime icon.

Unfortunately, iOS 4.3 is not available for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2nd generation, which indicates that iOS 4.2.1 was the last iOS software update for these devices.

We will let you know if the beta version of iOS 4.3 reveals any other interesting new features.

Thanks Naveed for the tip!
