Apple Reveals More Differences Between GSM iPhone And CDMA iPhone

verizon iphone

I guess everyone knows by now that Verizon iPhone does not allow simultaneous voice and data transfer (over 3G).

However, Apple has recently published the difference between AT&T’s GSM iPhone 4 and Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 in a Knowledge Base article, which explains how some minor features such as call forwarding, call waiting, caller id, conference calls, inserting pauses when dialing and hold work.

It also mentions settings and features that are not available on Verizon iPhone. The KB should be quite useful for new Verizon iPhone users, especially those who have switched from AT&T.

Apple has explained the differences between GSM iPhone 4 and CDMA iPhone 4 in the table shown below:

Apple has also provided the following additional information:

  • Contacts or phone numbers on webpages that contain alphabetic characters beyond seven digits may not dial as expected. In these instances, either remove the additional letters or use a pause to dial the extension (555-1212,1234).
    • Example: 1-800-MY-IPHONE or 555-1212×1234
  • The following settings and features are not available on iPhone 4 (CDMA model):
    • Enabling a SIM PIN
    • Importing SIM contacts
    • Selecting a carrier network or editing an APN

Most of them are quite obvious as the CDMA iPhone does not come with a SIM.

What do you think of some of the features like inability to make simultaneous voice calls and data transfer (over 3G) that are not available on the Verizon iPhone? Please let us know in the comments section below.

Really? You mean on a phone with no SIM card, importing contacts from your SIM is not possible???

  • Nonameforyou

The GSM version is superior. There is a reason why CDMA is outdated. I mean really, look how little one can do. Only 2 calls, no calls on hold, no data+voice, slower overall speed.

    • ybt

      I completely agree.

  • Tony

More reasons to stay on GSM.

  • Andrew

Very true CDMA should just have disappeared its almost like black and white versus color

  • dakpluto

Wow, looking at that chart….CDMA really is a pain in the ass.

hello i live in the UK can anyone tell me what all the fuss is about the Verizon phone? i have a perfect iphone 4 contract 600 mins unlimited texts and unlimited internet on orange

  • iphone user

well see your lucky people like my self in north America have horrible plans for 50 we get 200 min 500 MB but lucky i also got unlimited text

  • Steve

for myself over at Malaysia, my plan sux too since i have to pay usd33 for 333 talk time, 1GB data, 200 FOC SMS (to the same network ONLY!!) .. how sad is that?!!!

  • boydz

CDMA is horrible, lucky im in aust i pay $99 to have unlimited phone calls and text and 5 GB of download did i mention international calls were included? The networks in the US seem to be really poor, and lacking compared to ours

I switched from iPhone 3G to Verizon, I immediately saw better sound quality over ATT. The download speeds blow ATT away. I am completely satisfied with my switch.

It’s funny you mention Verizom speeds blow AT&T away when it’s a well known fact the GSM is faster than CDMA. Just one more reason why CDMA is outdated. Given you state that the voice quality improved and you are seeing faster speeds, it’s safe to say you do not live in a highly populated area. No offense meant there. Verizon does indeed have broader coverage, and if anyone lives that far out from a major city then they’re probably better off going with Verizon…until AT&T expands more into their region. But if you’re in the city and want an iPhone, AT&T (GSM) is the only way to go.

Sounds like this guy ^^ works for verizon these companies do stuff like that

I will agree with Sking. Cingular Wireless GSM Sucks. I worked at 2 companies that used AT&T that got bought by Cingular. Then Cingular switched the Brand to AT&T to trick people into thinking they are quality. Anyways, I got dropped calls all the time and no signal at home. I was almost fired cuz my boss arrogantly thought it was impossible for AT&T to suck. I have a Verizon phone and never once did I not get a signal. Sure I lost a call every so often but not like Cingulars crappy iteration of GSM.

    That was Kent for sking^^

one more time – “Meant”, right?

  • RW

I don’t really care if I can send email, surf the web and talk on the phone all at the same time. I am happy my calls do not drop like flies anymore. Cingular Wireless (AT&T) implemetation of GSM is major fail for people who are on the go. If you find a good signal and not move, Cingular is fine. I am so happy I do not have dropped phucking calls anymore.

  • Huh

I didn’t know my Verizon iPhone couldn’t import SIM contacts. :)

  • Alucard

Like I said, RW…if you live in the sticks then go with Verizon. Been an iPhone user since the original and I’ve had maybe 2 dropped calls EVER…from the east coast to Hawaii (won’t even touch international travel since Verizon can’t do that). I swapped from Verizon to get an iPhone when they hit the shelves and I’ve never looked back. Frankly, I never had any dropped calls with Verizon either, but their customer service blows. With AT&T, I’ve never even had to speak with customer service. I’ll take that coupled with superior technology any day.
