iPhone Clock Falls Back An Hour Instead Of Springing Forward? [DST Issue]

iphone clock

The Day Light Savings (DST) started in the US few minutes back when the clocks moved forward from 1:59 am to 3:00 am.

However, iPhone users are reporting that the clock fell back an hour instead of springing forward.

Mashable first reported the issue and we're seeing quite a few users reporting the issue on Twitter:

If you need to wake up at any specific time tomorrow, beware: It appears that Verizon iPhones fell back an hour at midnight tonight instead of springing forward.

Though Mashable reports that the issue is affecting only Verizon iPhone users, based on the comments, it looks like the issue is not limited to just Verizon iPhone users.

This is not the first time, iPhone has been hit by the time bug, iPhone alarms had stopped working when we entered the new year and a DST bug had also affected iPhone users last year.

It looks like restarting the iPhone resolves the issue. So if you depend on your iPhone alarm clock then please be aware of the issue and the workaround to fix the issue.

Were you affected by the issue or your iPhone clock moved forward by an hour just fine? Let us know in the comments.

  1. My AT&T iPhone 4 sprung forward an hour right on time no issues here

  2. TarkinMX says:

3GS jailbroken on 4.2.1 and no issues here

  3. Jc says:

    At&t iphone 4 4.2.1 jailbroken no issues!!:)

  4. Darkhorse says:

My clock moved forward just fine, iOS 4.3

  5. mikes says:

i find it particularly hilarious that Apple simply can’t get something simple like daylight savings right.

    • Reptile says:

Very much agree with you. Bet someone slept right through that programming meeting.

I suggest to users with the problem, download one of many free clock apps in place of native clock app. Unless Apple methodically ‘screwed’ with users to force new updates. (Jobs chuckles in background)

  6. timemchn says:

iPhone 4 w/ os 4.3 jumped straight to 3 reminding me of the time changing. LOL I thought I has spaced out for a hour! LOL

  7. lucy says:

my iphone 4 dropped an hour at 1am, turning in it to midnight! I powered off and back on, and it is still the same. hmmmmmm. wish i had another alarm clock to use….

  8. Reptile says:

iPhone 4. iOS 4.1 jailbroken. AT&T. Works fine. Clock ‘sprang’ forward. Verified with US NIST Atomic Clock standard.

    Could be isolated incidents.

  9. It is only Verizon... says:

It is only Verizon, not AT&T. That makes me laugh. “Can you hear me now? Yes, but you called me 2 hours too late!”

  10. Richad Campbell says:

On Bell/Telus in Canada and me iPhone 4 has jumped ahead an extra hour. Went from 1am to 3 am

  11. TJ says:

Worked fine on my iPhone 4 with 4.3, those other people must be having issues because of their network towers broadcasting the wrong time, since that’s where cell phones get their “time” from. That’s why everyone’s cell phones always show the same time.

  12. Ciguapito says:

AT&T 4.3 jumped 1 hr ahead as scheduled. No problem here. It seems it’s only Verizon with the problem. Can you hear me now? Yeah but I hear you with a delay!

  13. GrassGuy says:

Att iPhone 4 4.2.1 JB, clock changed but my alarm did not. I set the iOS alarm and alarmclock pro for 3:00, they both went off at 4:00. Come on apple, why can’t mobile OS makers get the alarm clock right, my old winmo phone had the same issues.

  14. Branden says:

I’m running 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, and rather than just jump an hour ahead for DST, my phone apparently also felt like formatting my alarms. I had six alarms set last night (for different times of the day on different days of the week) that I confirmed before I went to bed (can you tell I’ve slept in before?) and when I woke up to the sound of work calling this morning, I came to find out that my iPhone no longer had any alarms stored in it.

  15. Todd says:

    Att iPhone 4 jailbrokn
World Clock off by one hour back?

  16. Greg says:

Bell in Canada. Jumped an extra hour ahead. The one morning I coulda got a ‘full’ 6 hours sleep. Grrrr

  17. Lou says:

Verizon Iphone 4 jailbroken 4.2.1 showed time just fine. & nonjailbrowken one 4.2.1 fine too. Both purchased only about a month ago.

  18. Steven M. says:

My Verizon iPhone functioned exactly as it should have and sprung forward. My alarm went off as expected.

  19. carberam says:

iPhone 3GS on 4.1 Jailbroken and Unlocked on T-Mobile. My time switched normally, but all alarms set to repeat at any interval failed. Alarms set to ‘Never’ all working properly though. Rebooting didn’t fix the problem. Guess it’s back to a alternative Clock App.

  20. Marusya says:

    A glitch in time… :)

  21. p to the izzle says:

Jailbroken iPhone 3G 4.2.1 and my time failed to change. Mine is set to adjust the time automatically. It did not. My Macbook time is correct though. I had to adjust the time manually on the iPhone.

  22. melvvarius says:

mmmm… de-ja-vu? Here in the UK our DST kicks in on 27th March. Somat to look forward to lol. How many IOS updates have been affected by this to date? (pun un-intentional lol) That’ll teach apple to use wikipedia as a reference manual hehehehe.

Still “Ya gets wat ya pays for” is my motto. That’ll teach us to by cheap n’ tacky iProducts rofpmsl xxx

  23. Lg1 says:

iPhone 4 on 4.3 jb no problem … How ever wife iPhone 4 on 4.0 jb did not go forward. The 2 phones are with AT&T

  24. Kate says:

My AT&T iPhone4 seems to have a problem. The clock did go forward by an hour but the alarm has stopped working.Tried restarting the phone with no luck:(Ithere a fix???

  25. FredMC says:

My crappy slow-ass old 3G on 4.2.1 had the right time when I woke up.

  26. MattDoug says:

My iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 (jailbroken) worked fine and my alarm went off at 4:45am like I wanted, but then at 5:45am it went off again and my clock turned back to 4:45am…

  27. MattDoug says:

Oh, and I’m on AT&T, so it’s not just Verizon iPhones that were affected

  28. LastBorn7198 says:

I find it funny that people reporting time errors everytime and blaming Apple… your iPhone should be synchronizing with your cell provider towers— that said, the blame should be with your provider.

I never had an issues with this. AT&T always keep my device on time.

    • LastBorn7198 says:

Btw, I have five iPhones (1-2G, 2-I4, & 2-3G) all with Date & Time Set Automatically (Settings/General/Date & Time)and they all adjust the time accordingly.

      • melvarius says:

It’s not the time change that’s the problem (at least not for me). It’s the repeating alarm clocks that screw up on my phone.

It seems to occur during DST and at the New Year. Totally expecting the same issue when we get a leap year.

    • ng says:

Cell towers transmit GMT. Its up to your phone’s software to translate to your local timezone.

  29. fas says:

I dont get the point of Apple having issues with the timing.

  30. Crow says:

iPhone 3GS, 4.2.1, jb and unlocked to tmobile, no problem with the time change.

  31. Anekin says:

The issue is when the phone is set to “set automatically” if it’s turned off it will charge. This has been the bug in 4.X for awhile. My iPhone still on Jb 3.1.3 is fine but my Gf iPhone 4 bought 3 weeks ago with Jb 4.2.1 did not change time. When I turn off “set automatic” it corrected itself.

  32. John says:

The time on my iphone 4 changed just fine without problems. I haven’t experienced any of the time change errors that others observed.

  33. Q says:

I woke up and the time had changed appropriately, but just a few minutes ago I looked at my phone and the time went back an hour.
Then I went to manually change it but every time I change the setting back to automatic the time goes back to 4:49 instead of 5:59… ?

  34. So What says:

It amazes me so many people complain about these things and yet I have never had an issue with my 3GS nor with my previous 3G.

  35. J says:

I’m in the Toronto area on Fido and my phone went ahead just fine, but in the afternoon it all of a sudden went back an hour and now it’s still an hour behind this morning.

I have an iPhone 4 running 4.2.1 (it is jailbroken), my brother’s iPhone 4 is running 4.3 and had the exact same problem as me. I turned off automatic time but every time I turn it back on the time goes back an hour. Restarting my phone does nothing either.

My old 3GS I have to my son to use as an iPod Touch though has the correct time under 4.2.1 was fine and even after upgrading to 4.3 the time is fine.

  36. Jill says:

I have an AT&T iPhone 3GS. The time changed perfectly yesterday. BUT THIS MORNING it was Wrong! It said 4am at 5am. My husbands AT&T 3GS didn’t do that. His worked perfectly. If it wasn’t for his alarm I would’ve slept in.

  37. Lindsay says:

My iphone 3GS (ATT) changed time fine yesterday. Yet, when I woke up this morning, thank goodness for my internal clock since I use the iphone for my alarm, it changed itself back an hour. I went through settings and turned off auto clock, and it suddenly changed back to the correct time. Really, to be “smart” phones, they aren’t so smart. My husband’s old flip phone changed fine.

  38. iphone 3g 4.2.1 JailBroken change time just fine.. what that means is apple got some issues cause i seen non jailbroken are the ones that didn’t change

  39. Filthyjason says:

I’m in Arizona where we don’t celebrate (or is it hate?) Daylight savings time. Somehow every single effing time, my phone still grabs the DST change and I’m an hour off. This is BS Apple! Annoying to say the least since I’ve been having this problem for 2 years now.

  40. Peach Toadstool says:

AT&T iPhone 4. Time changed perfectly but alarms are going off an hour early O.o I’ve deleted all alarms, restarted phone and added new alarms. Still having an issue :(

  41. jg1 says:

Toronto: Jumped me ahead by 2 hours. Discovered my timezone adjusted itself to Halifax (hence the additional hour)… ???

  42. kyle says:

JAILBROKEN iphone 4 running 4.1 clock went forward with no issue but my alarms need to be set another hour ahead.. so i want to wake at 6am if i have it set for 6am it goes off at 5am. i need to set for 7am for it to go off at 6am. anyone else have this issue

  43. ksxiang says:

    Same here kyle:
