iPhone nano

It is less than a day to go for Apple’s media event where it is expected to unveil the 2nd generation iPad.

We’ve reported an insane number of news and rumors about Apple’s 2nd generation iPad.

So in case you missed them, here is a detailed roundup of all the rumors and speculations about Apple’s new iPad.

Display:

We had initially heard rumors that iPad 2 come with a super high 2048*1536 screen resolution just like iPhone 4’s gorgeous retina display. But now we’re hearing that the resolution of the display will be similar to the first generation iPad and may come with an anti-reflection screen.

Processor:

Apple is likely a faster [ARM] Cortex-A9 dual core processor in iPad 2 running at 1.2GHz.

Graphics:

iPad 2 may get a new version of Apple’s A4 chip (possibly dubbed A5 or A8), which uses the dual-core SGX535 GPU from Imagination Technologies.

References in iOS 4.3 have also indicates that Apple is planning to use the more powerful SGX543 GPU in the 2nd generation iPad.

Memory:

Several rumors have indicated that iPad 2 will come with 512MB RAM, twice as much as the original iPad.

Cameras:

iPad 2 is expected to come with front and rear facing cameras for FaceTime – Apple’s video calling feature like iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

Beta versions of iOS 4.3 contain references, which have suggested that the second generation iPad will get a front facing camera and also come pre-installed with Apple’s FaceTime, Camera and Photo Booth app.

Based on the image discovered in iOS 4.3 SDK, it looks like iPad 2 might get only a 1-megapixel rear camera, contrary to earlier reports that claimed that iPad 2 would come with a 5-megapixel camera.

The front-facing camera could turn out to be a VGA unit for Apple’s FaceTime video calling feature.

Size and Weight:

iPad 2 is expected to be thinner and lighter than the original iPad. iPad 2 could also get a lightweight carbon fiber body.

iPad 2 may also sport a smaller bezel compared to the current version of the iPad. Owing to this, the overall dimensions of the iPad would reduce to 239 mm x 186 mm compared to the current generation iPad’s size of 242.8 mm x 189.7 mm.

Speaker:

So called next generation iPad cases have indicated the possibility of a wide-range speaker (covered with wire mesh) to improve the sound quality.

Thunderbolt I/O Port:

iPad 2 could get a Thunderbolt I/O port like the new MacBook Pros for high speed media transfers.

Colors:

If the photo of what folks at 9 to 5 Mac claim is the front panel of iPad 2 is to be believed then it looks like the 2nd generation iPad may also come in white.

3-axis Gyroscope:

iPad 2 may come with a 3-axis gyroscope like iPhone 4, which would be a great boon to iPad gamers as it will improve motion gaming experience.

Carriers:

Apple may use the dual GSM/CDMA chipsets produced by Qualcomm instead of the Infineon chipset used in the original iPad so that iPad 2 is also compatible with AT&T and Verizon’s CDMA network.

Availability:

We’ve heard rumors that iPad 2 will be available only by the end of March or early April. However, recent reports indicate that Apple’s 2nd generation iPad could be available as early as tomorrow or next week.

What will it be called?

iPad 2 has been a popular name for Apple’s second generation iPad.

Photos of Apple’s new iPad:

I am as well, but then again apple can take the same iPad, spray paint it white and duct tape a big ass web cam to the top, and I’ll still buy it. So I guess I’m excited about anything apple does

I think the ipad1.5 is good idea from apple like the iphone 3gs, the sales of ipads is probably falling so i improved ipad will help

  • hxclos

It almost looks like the first gen iPhone. I’m thinking the new iPad will look more like the MacBook Air in the sense that the razor-thin edges will give the appearance of a much thinner iPad.

God, I really hope they release it quickly and don’t release an iPad 3 a few months later as the rumor has it.

Question: Where can we tune in to watch the event?

    • Brett

Good question! I’m gonna be in school tomorrow and need to use my handy dandy iPhone(haha) to watch event. Any links?
