Time Warner App To Bring Live TV To The iPad

Time Warner iPad App

The Associated Press reports that Time Warner, which is the second largest cable company in the US with 12.4 million subscribers, is planning to launch an iPad app that will bring live television to the iPad.

The iPad app will allow Time Warner customers to watch 30 cable channels including Comedy Central, MTV, Fox News etc on their iPad.

Time Warner Cable President Rob Marcus said in a statement:

"We are tremendously excited about this app, which is the first of many that will allow our customers to harness the power of their tablet-type  devices,"

The iPad app will be available tomorrow for free in the App Store. But according to Associated Press:

[..] it will only work for people who subscribe to both video and Internet service from the New York-based cable company. Even then, it only works in the home, when the iPad is connected to the company's cable modem via a Wi-Fi router.

You can checkout the discussion between Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt, CTO Mike LaJoie, VP of Web Services Jason Gaedtke and Director of Digital Communications Jeff Simmermon where they’re taking a look at the prototype for their iPad app.

It would have been pretty cool if the app allowed users to watch live television on the go though we won't be surprised if someone comes out with a jailbreak tweak that tricks the app into thinking its using the company's wireless router and allows users to watch live television on the go.

Time Warner also plans to add features such as allow users to use the app as a remote control and give access to video on demand, which were mentioned in the iPad app prototype discussion videos above.

We'll let you know as soon as the app is available in the App Store.

Update:

Time Warner's TWCable TV iPad app is now available in the App Store. You can download it for free using this iTunes link.

if u r at home why not use your TV?
    app is useless…

i guess jailbreak tweaks wont help – unless time warner is soooo dump they will rely on app, not servers, to tell where customer is…

they will find ways to jam us for more money… I cut off my cable as we were getting charge over 60 dollars a months for simple access.. we get hit with luxury taxes on it…

  9. Ben says:

In the video he says a user will be able to watch a program on the train and be able to pick up where he left off when we gets home. So it may allow users to watch recorded content anywhere in the world?

it’s great, i just installed it. i like it, now my kids can watch cable in their bedroom on their ipads without me having to buy another set top box. very easy to use app
i would like to see them add an airplay option, then i could stream it to an apple tv… other than that i don’t see any other improvements needed

Downloaded and installed the App and it is “unable to fulfill your request at this time. Please try again later”. Or when you open the app, it has got the boot logo and it crashes!

Anyone have ideas why they don’t have this app for the iPhone or iPod touch?
