iOS 4.3.3

Earlier today, Apple responded to questions raised by about the iPhone and iPad 3G location tracking issue reported by Security researchers.

Apple has revealed that it plans to release a minor iOS software update – most likely iOS 4.3.3 in the next few weeks to address a bug in the way it manages the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database that is cached on the iPhone.

Apple plans to release iOS 4.3.3 update that:

  • reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
  • ceases backing up this cache, and
  • deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

Apple also plans to encrypted the cached database in iOS 5, which will be unveiled at WWDC 2011 that starts on June 6th.
