Apple had sued Samsung earlier in the week for blatantly copying iPhone and iPad.
Not surprisingly, in response to Apple’s lawsuit, Samsung has counter sued Apple in South Korea, Japan and Germany, alleging it infringed patents related to mobile-communications technologies.
Reuters reports:
"Samsung is responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business," the statement said.
The lawsuit in Seoul cites five patent infringements, the lawsuit in Japan cites two and the one in Germany cites three alleged violations.
During Apple’s earning call earlier in the week, Apple’s COO Tim Cook had this to say about the dispute:
We are Samsung's largest customer, and Samsung is a very valued component supplier to us.
Separately from this, we felt the mobile communication division of Samsung had "crossed the line".
After spending some time trying to work on the issue, we decided to go to the courts.
Chang Sea Jin, a business professor at National University of Singapore explains how this will play out:
Apple is trying to annoy Samsung - they’re throwing a ball at Samsung to keep them in check.
This is strictly business. The typical way to deal with cases like this is to counter sue. It’s not between the management of Samsung and Apple, their lawyers will work it out.

From what I understand the engineers of samsungs galaxy made the iPhone 2 and 3G. That phone sure operates a lot like the iPhone

From what I have read Sony is Samsung’s largest buyer. And honestly I think they are just trying to throw off the SG2 launch. Some versions of the SG look similar to the iPhone but I can’t imagine anyone accidentally buying a SG thinking it was an iPhone. And because of Apple’s contracts with Carries the iPhone is to be displayed by itself away from all other smartphones so there should be no reason for confusion. I’m sure this will be settled with both companies satisfied. Otherwise both will suffer if the one of them were to win the lawsuit.
